Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, received his initial dose of a coronavirus vaccine Tuesday morning. Fauci was among a group of federal government health officials and health care workers who were vaccinated. He was joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, National Institutes of Health Director Francis Collins, and front-line workers from the NIH. Watch the public vaccinations below:Before his was inoculated, Fauci was asked why he decided to get the COVID-19 vaccine. He gave two reasons – because he sees patients and because he wants to encourage Americans to do the same so the nation emerge from the pandemic. "For me it’s important for two reasons, one is that I’m an attending physician here on the staff at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and so I do see patients, but as important or more important, it’s as a symbol for the rest of the country that I feel extreme confidence in the safety and efficacy of this vaccine and I want everyone who has the opportunity to get vaccinated, so we can have a veil of protection over this country that would end this pandemic," said Fauci.Azar was asked the same question and said he wants the American people to know that he has absolute confidence in the integrity of the vaccine production process. “As secretary, it’s on my authority that these vaccines are authorized, and I want the American people to know that I have absolute and complete confidence in the integrity and the independence of the processes used by the FDA to approve these vaccines,” said Azar. “I am just so grateful to NIH and Moderna, and all the participants of Operation Warp Speed for bringing us to this point where now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel from this dark period. The men and women received the vaccine recently approved by Moderna, which began being administered to Americans on Monday after it received an emergency use authorization from the FDA late Friday. A clinical trial of the Moderna vaccine indicated it is 94% effective against the coronavirus. Those who are administered Pfizer's vaccine are asked to return 21 days later for a booster. The vaccine was one of two authorized by the FDA for emergency use. Earlier this month, Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine received an emergency use authorization from the FDA. The vaccine will be the first of two shots. Those vaccinated with Moderna's coronavirus vaccine will be asked to get a booster 28 days later.Fauci has expressed optimism that getting the US to herd immunity through a coronavirus vaccine will begin allowing Americans to return to normal. Getting enough people vaccinated to allow for a return to normalcy, however, might not happen until well into 2021, Fauci has cautioned."Just over the past few days, science has allowed us to have a vaccine that when we distribute it to people throughout the country, and hopefully throughout the world, we will crush this outbreak that has really terrorized us for the last 11 months, not only here in the United States, but worldwide,” Fauci said at an event last Friday at Duke University. “It's damaged severely the economy and led to people suffering things, not necessarily directly related to being ill themselves, but all the secondary consequences that go with the effects of a global pandemic such as this." 3381

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Neighbors say two elderly residents of the Lincoln Palms Apartment in El Cajon were taken to the hospital Wednesday, after an explosion on Lincoln Avenue. New resident Jorge Limon told 10News Reporter Rina Nakano he and his grilfriend Samantha were unpacking when they noticed an odd smell. Later, they heard what sounded like two explosions. "We thought somebody threw a table out of the window or something. But then we saw the smoke and fire," Limon said, adding that he immediately grabbed his fire extinguisher to help.  The explosion happened on the first floor of the building around 8 p.m., just below Limon's new apartment.Fire crews arrived four minutes after the 911 call, but were surprised to see that the flames were already out when they arrived. With his extinguisher, Limon was able to put out the flames. The explosion shattered the windows of the downstairs unit, leaving the curtains and glass all around the pool. Inside Limon found the two elderly residents, who he said both suffered injuries. "They both went ot the burn center, which means they had enough burns to where it was a concern," said Heartland Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Bent Koch. San Diego Gas & Electric, El Cajon Police and several other agencies are investigating what caused the explosion. Limon told 10News his fire extinguisher was no accident. "I made a big deal to bring it," he said. "I'm glad I did, because if it weren't for this bad boy, God knows what would have happened."10News Reporter Rina Nakano shot a Facebook live explaining the scene. You can watch below:  1705

EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - Unforeseen problems at the East County Performing Arts Center will delay a renovation project and plans to turn the venue into a rock concert hall. They will also cost the city about million more to complete the project. The City Council approved the extra cost at their meeting on December 11th.The ECPAC has been closed since 2010, a casualty of the Great Recession.Over the years it fell into disrepair. But in 2017, city leaders put together a plan to reopen it. They signed a contract with concert promoter Live Nation to bring about 70 acts per year to the venue.Part of the deal called for nearly .3 million of renovations to make it more like a concert venue than a performance hall.RELATED: Renovations underway as Live Nation takes over East County Performing Arts CenterAs that work went on, other problems surfaced. Engineers found the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system needed to be replaced. They also found parts of the roof that needed repairs. The extra cost for those two combined is about .7 million. To prepare for any further problems that the city also agreed to add 2,000 to the budget as "contingency" money. The new money will come from the city's general fund, which had a surplus last year. They'll also use about 0,000 from the original budget for renovations that hasn't been spent yet.Speaking at the Council Meeting on the 11th, Mayor Bill Wells voiced support for the extra cost, saying the project shouldn't be done with "half measures.""Since we're investing so much in this and Live Nation doesn't want it to be a hot summer day in August and have the air conditioning go out, we collectively made the decision it was prudent to spend the extra money," Wells said. With the extra work, the venue will now open in the fall of 2019. The original plan was to have it ready by this coming spring. The council approved a resolution for the extra money with a unanimous 4-0 vote. Councilmember Ben Kalasho abstained. 2000
