BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Florida Atlantic University's commencement ceremony scheduled for 5pm today has been canceled and the Student Union is being evacuated after the school received what law enforcement considers a credible threat.An FAU source tells WPTV that right as the ceremony was about to start, a note was found in a women's bathroom stuck to the mirror that contained a threat in reference to the graduation ceremony.Sean Brammer, Chief of FAU Police, would not specify what type of threat was issued, saying only that it was specific to the commencement.The school is considering different options on rescheduling the commencement ceremony, but have not announced their intentions yet.FAU Assistant Vice President Joshua D. Glanzer said "There were 462 students scheduled to participate in the ceremony. Every effort will be made to give these students the recognition they deserve." 900

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. -- The largest wildfire on record in Colorado is only 51 percent contained Tuesday, although firefighters say they were finally able to “go on the offense” battling the blaze this week.The Cameron Peak Fire is more than 200,000 acres in size. It started August 13 and is burning northwest of Denver in the mountains. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.A Red Flag Warning starts Wednesday, as dry and windy weather persists.The weather is also hampering efforts to control two new wildfires burning in Boulder County, north of Denver. Both started over the weekend.The Calwood Fire is under 10,000 acres and is about 17 percent contained. The Lefthand Canyon Fire is 470 acres and 4 percent contained. The cause of both fires is still under investigation.Because of their proximity to residential areas, thousands are evacuated due to these two wildfires. BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. — A man is under arrest after police say several pipe bombs were found near a Florida strip mall Wednesday night.Gregory Haasze, 34, has been arrested on 26 counts of making, possessing, throwing, projecting, placing, or discharging a destructive device.Police said the bombs were found in the area of Congress Avenue and Old Boynton Road in Boynton Beach following reports of a loud noise in the area on Wednesday.Officers temporarily shut down nearby roads and businesses as they investigated the suspected pipe bombs. They also evacuated apartments, homes and stores in the area out of an abundance of caution.The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad Unit responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.A resident told WPTV she had to wait for more than an hour to get home."Since the Fourth of July, there have been really loud noises in the neighborhood," the neighbor said. "The only thing that could make that kind of sound is a bomb. I've never heard anything that loud before. When you're outside it hurts your ears it's so loud."Police said residents were eventually able to get back in their homes by 12:30 a.m. on Thursday. 1181

Brunch can be a big draw for many restaurants, including at Sam’s No. 3 Diner in Denver, where the wait time to be seated on weekends could take up to two hours.“It gets crowded on that sidewalk out there,” said owner Sam Armatas.Pre-pandemic, Armatas says the iconic downtown diner had more than 180 seats. Now, with new health restrictions, that number has been cut to 83.“Business has been affected greatly,” Armatas said. “It’s a different world, it’s a different way to operate, and it’s a different way to serve.”Less seating means less opportunities to make money which led management at Sam’s to look outside their restaurant to serve more customers.“I kind of just looked over at my neighbor and thought, ‘hey, they’re not using that patio during the day. Maybe I can use that patio during the day,’” Armatas said. “So, I got in contact with Matt.”Matt Ruff is the general manager and part owner of Dazzle, one of the top 100 jazz clubs in the world.“It’s kind of foolish not to lend our neighbors a hand during this time,” Ruff said.Ruff is lending Dazzle’s outdoor patio space to Sam’s during the day for free, a move customers seem to appreciate while industry experts are calling it a financial Band-Aid.According to the National Restaurant Association, somewhere between 15,000 to 20,000 restaurants across the country closed their doors for good during this pandemic.Experts expect that number to increase nationwide as an estimated 8,000,000 American service industry workers are already out of jobs.“We’re monthly doing the revenue we would do on a good Saturday,” Ruff said. “How do you survive with doing something like that?”So far, this partnership with Dazzle and Sam’s sharing space seems to be working out well for both businesses.“It’s been awesome,” Armatas said. ”It’s an additional 12 to 15 seats that we didn’t have before.”The plan is to continue sharing this space until these establishments are able to operate at full capacity or the weather no longer allows for outdoor seating. 2020
