The ongoing feud between the National Rifle Association and the medical community continues in wake of a shooting at a Chicago hospital Monday.A recent article published earlier this month by physicians called gun violence a public health crisis and called for tougher gun laws. In response, the NRA tweeted that doctors should “stay in their lane.”The NRA’s response received backlash, with doctors across the U.S. and abroad expressing their disdain using the hashtag #ThisisMyLane, often with graphic images giving a glimpse into emergency rooms after treating victims of gun violence.Monday, gun violence became personal for doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital in Chicago after a shooter entered, killing an ER doctor, a pharmacy resident and a Chicago Police Officer. Now, another group of doctors are pushing back against the NRA. In an editorial published by the Annals of Internal Medicine, doctors say they won’t be silenced in using what they learn to better care for their patients.“The NRA does not believe firearm-related injury and its prevention is within the purview of physicians. We could not disagree more,” read the editorial in part. The NRA has accused doctors of pushing a gun control agenda. 1222

The National Rifle Association and a mall in Illinois stepped in for a boy who was left in tears after a mall Santa told him he couldn't have a Nerf gun for Christmas.According to USA Today, the Dec. 6 exchange between the mall Santa at the Harlem Irving Plaza in Norridge, Illinois, and Sabella DeCarlo's son Michael went viral last week.In the video, Michael burst into tears after being told no several times by the mall Santa when he asked for a Nerf gun for Christmas, USA Today reported. In an interview with Fox News, Sabella told the network she was shocked by Santa's response, thinking he may have misheard her son, and then thought it was a joke. But Santa's response was still no.After hearing about what had happened, officials with the Harlem Irving Plaza sent a Santa out to Michael's home to gift him with a Nerf gun.In a Facebook post, the mall and the third-party Santa company were "distraught and deeply apologetic" about what transpired between Michael and the Santa and wanted to make sure Michael wasn't sad."We are happy to report that the "real" Santa visited the boy at his home today to bring him a nerf gun! We hope we restored Christmas magic to this boy and his family with Santa's special visit," the mall wrote in a Facebook post. 1268

The number of people killed in wildfires burning in California has risen to 50 -- including 48 from northern California's Camp Fire, already the most destructive and deadly blaze in state history. As firefighters battle that fire Wednesday in Butte County north of Sacramento, authorities fear more human remains will be found as searchers comb through rubble and ashes in Paradise, the ravaged town of about 27,000 residents."I want to tell you, though, this is a very, very difficult process," Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory L. Honea told reporters. "There's certainly the unfortunate possibility that even after we search an area, once we get people back in there, it's possible that human remains can be found."PHOTOS: Wildfires devastationAuthorities have requested that 100 National Guard troops join cadaver dogs, mobile morgues and anthropology teams in the grim search and recovery of human remains. In Southern California, firefighters still are battling the Woolsey Fire, which so far has left two people dead in Malibu. They've also been fighting a new blaze, the Sierra Fire, in San Bernardino County. It started late Tuesday about 50 miles east of Los Angeles near Rialto and Fontana, and by Wednesday morning had burned 147 acres, though no evacuations have been ordered, the San Bernardino County Fire District said.Fire officials said the Sierra Fire was fanned by the Santa Ana winds -- strong, dry winds that high-pressure systems push from east to west, from the mountains and desert areas down into the Los Angeles area.Winds will be "particularly strong" Wednesday morning but are expected to weaken by evening, the National Weather Service said.Meanwhile in Northern California, forecasters have said the winds fueling the Camp Fire would slowly begin to decrease Wednesday and give firefighters a reprieve. 1842

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reports an eruption at the Halemaumau Crater of the Kilauea Volcano. Trade winds will push any embedded ash toward the Southwest. The name change for Boy Scouts of America is creating a buzz online as people react the organization's recent move to become more inclusive. They will begin calling the program for ages 11 to 17 "Scouts BSA."It was a historic decision for Boy Scouts of America as they take the next step towards allowing females into all their programs with their focus on bringing families together in one spot. It's all a part of the new "Scout Me In"?recruitment campaign, uniting girls and boys of the same family with one organization."Having Johnny in Scouts and Sally in soccer or some other activities — if they can go and do things together as a family unit, that's what families are looking for from the research we have," says Chris Mehaffey, scout executive and CEO of the Mid-America Council. And so the move was made today, switching the Boy Scouts program to Scouts BSA with the hopes that the new name will make girls feel comfortable joining the program geared towards 11-18 year olds.Still Mehaffey believes the name switch won't make a huge difference in girls joining the scouts. "I think those that are interested in our program will come anyway, this just shows that we are being more inclusive to what demographics we'll be serving."As for the Girl Scouts, they're remaining focused on creating programs for girls, and only girls. "So it's not changing the way we deliver our mission and programs. We're going to continue to do what girls asked us to do and provide for their changing needs," says Melissa Breazile, marketing director of Girl Scouts of Nebraska. And if girls desire, Mehaffey says girls can choose to join both organizations. "You don't have to choose. Girl Scouts meet on different nights, Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA meet on different nights, if you're interested in both if parents will allow, do both."Now this switch only affects the Boy Scout program. Ranks like Cub Scouts and Eagle Scouts, will keep their names. While the Cub Scouts have already began to bring in girls, the organization plans to fully bring them in by February of 2019. 2115
