BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Saturday urged young Chinese to embrace "patriotism," "diligence," "practice" and "devotion" to rejuvenate the Chinese nation.     Young people should courageously shoulder their historic mission and work hard with the whole nation to build socialism with Chinese characteristics, Hu said. President Hu Jintao on Saturday urged young Chinese to embrace "patriotism," "diligence," "practice" and "devotion" to rejuvenate the Chinese nationHe made the remarks during a visit to Beijing-based China Agricultural University ahead of the Chinese Youth Day, which is Monday.     The day originated from the "May Fourth Movement," a mass student movement in China that began on May 4, 1919. It spearheaded a national campaign to overthrow the feudal society and promote scientific and democratic ideas.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said that in the past 90 years, generations of young Chinese, encouraged by the "May Fourth" spirit which highlights patriotism, progress, democracy and science, have made unremitting efforts in pursuit of the grand goal of rejuvenating the Chinese nation. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) shakes hands with teachers and students during his visit to the China Agricultural University, in Beijing, May 2, 2009."Now, the bright prospect of realizing that goal has dawned before us, and the best way for modern young people to remember the movement and the forerunners is to work persistently with the whole nation for the progress of the socialist cause with Chinese characteristics," he said.     The tasks the students shoulder are heavy and their mission is glorious, the president said, encouraging them to uphold patriotism, study diligently, practise what they have learned at school, and dedicate themselves to the society by working hard for the bright future of the country. "First, I hope you will always uphold the banner of patriotism, as it is the spiritual backbone that has sustained the Chinese nation through all the tribulations."     Hu said that in modern China, the most distinctive theme of patriotism is promoting the socialist modernization through reform and opening-up, building a well-off society and turning the blueprint of rejuvenating the Chinese nation into reality. He urged the students to realize the value of their lives through working for the country and the people.     Secondly, he encouraged the students to study hard to lay a foundation for their future progress in life. "Our country's modernization drive calls for a large number of high-quality professionals, and so long as you study diligently, you will become useful people for the nation's development." "I hope more students will voluntarily temper themselves at the grassroots level and work at places where the country and people need them most."     He also called for devotion from the young people, urging them not to just seek personal interests but dedicate themselves to the society. UNITED NATIONS, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The international community should give a more balanced assessment of the political progress Myanmar has made and treat it with less arrogance and prejudice, a senior Chinese diplomat said here Monday.     Liu Zhenmin, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, told an open meeting of the Security Council that "it has been unfair to turn a blind eye to the progress Myanmar has made, or instead, always be picky at its government."     Liu said the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has been actively conducted good offices in Myanmar as mandated by the General Assembly in recent years.     "His unremitting efforts and the positive outcome thereby achieved deserve an objective and fair assessment by the international community," he said.     Ban briefed the 15 members of the Security Council at the meeting on his latest visit to the south-eastern Asian country on July 3-4, the second in just over a year. An open Security Council meeting on Myanmar is held at the UN headquarters in New York, the United States, July 13, 2009. China is opposed to putting the Myanmar question on the UN Security Council agenda and is against isolating and sanctioning against the country, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN Liu Zhenmin said here on Monday, stressing the events that happened inside Myanmar were its internal affairsDuring his visit, Ban met with Senior-General Than Shwe, Myanmar's head of state, and people from other political parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD), but was under pressure from some media and certain countries due to his failure to meet with NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.     Liu voiced China's support to Ban and highly appreciated his recent visit, calling the visit "positive and full of significance."     "Whether or not he met with Aung San Suu Kyi should not be used as a criterion to measure the success of the visit," he said.     Also on Monday, Myanmar's UN Ambassador U Than Swe told the Security Council that his government regretted its inability to arrange the meeting as the special court has its independent jurisdiction over the matter.     "Aung San Suu Kyi was unfortunately involved in the legal proceed. In order to maintain the justice of judicial process, the Myanmar government did not arrange the bilateral meeting. This is totally understandable. The UN should respect the jurisdiction of its member state," Liu said.     He said China has time and again stressed that the secretary-general's good offices are a process and his visit is a part of the efforts.     Ban had in-depth talks with top leaders of Myanmar, directly conveyed to them the concern of the international community and enhanced mutual trust between Myanmar and the UN, Liu said.     "This will play an important role in encouraging the Myanmar side to maintain the current momentum and promote the democratic process according to the established plans," Liu said.

HEFEI, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu Tuesday urged efforts to fight pine wood nematode disease, which has caused severe damage to pine forests in several provinces.     Strong measures and more funds must be used to curb the spread of the disease, Hui said.     The disease, also known as pine wood cancer, can quickly kill huge numbers of trees. In China, the disease was first detected in1982 in eastern Jiangsu Province.     According to a conference in Huangshan City in eastern Anhui Province held by the State Forestry Administration, the disease has spread to 14 provincial regions, killed more than 5 million mu(333,333 hectare) of pine forests and caused huge losses.     Attendees at the conference agreed measures must be taken to stop the spread of the deadly disease by 2010 and reduce the area of affected forests 60 percent by 2030.

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said Wednesday China's economy is at a critical moment as it begins to recover "steadily".     Wen told an executive meeting of the State Council, China's Cabinet, that economic performance had started to show positive changes, favorable factors were increasing, the overall situation had stabilized and was moving upwards.     He said the government should continue a pro-active fiscal policy and moderately relaxed monetary policy.     Investment growth kept accelerating, consumption maintained a rapid and steady increase, and domestic demand played a stronger role in boosting economic growth, said Wen.     Agricultural and industrial production grew, and regional coordinated development was making progress, said Wen.     The financial market was stable, and investor confidence stronger. Urban employment kept rising, and reconstruction of areas affected by last year's May 12 earthquake was speeding up, said Wen.     Government measures to fight the global economic crisis proved correct and effective, and should continue to be implemented and improved according to the changing situation, he said.     But it should also be noted that the foundation for economic recovery was not stable and many uncertainties remained, said Wen, citing sluggish exports, the fiscal deficit and trade protectionism.     Wen called for clear-headed judgment and readiness for difficulties and complexities that might occur in the long term.     He urged local governments to further promote economic restructuring, guarantee the stable development of agriculture, encourage technological innovation and work to enhance energy conservation and environmental protection.     Comprehensive efforts should be made to boost domestic demand to power economic growth, Wen said, singling out such measures as subsidies for home appliances and automobiles in rural areas.     Housing consumption should be properly guided and the stable, healthy development of the property market should be ensured, said Wen, adding that tourism, entertainment and cultural consumption should be developed.     Central government-invested programs should be carefully carried out, while private investment should be expanded, said Wen.     He also highlighted the importance of the coordinated development of urban and rural areas, called for the further deepening of reform and opening up and the building of social insurance systems.
