(KGTV) - The man accused of carrying out dozens of rapes and at least 12 murders across California in the 1970s and '80s did not enter a plea at his arraignment Friday.Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, was arrested Wednesday in connection with the East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer cases.He was handcuffed in a wheelchair during his court appearance, and listened to the judge with his eyes barely open.In a frail voice, DeAngelo responded, "I have a lawyer." An attorney from the public defender's office was with him in court.He was denied bail.DeAngelo, a former California police officer, is charged in Sacramento County with two counts of murder in the 1978 killings of Brian Maggiore and his wife, Katie, and with additional murder charges in Ventura County. (KGTV) -- Rideshare company Uber may temporarily put its operations in California on pause in light of its challenge of a state bill that reclassifies its drivers as employees.Earlier this week, a judge sided against Uber’s challenge to Assembly Bill 5. Under the bill, Uber will be forced to provide reclassified drivers with employee benefits such as health care and paid time off.Uber has previously said AB5, authored by San Diego-based state Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, limits its drivers’ flexibility and puts a financial strain on the company.In an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the company’s fight against the bill may put its rideshare service in California on hold until November, when ballots come in on Proposition 22, a measure that would classify drivers as contractors.“If the court doesn’t reconsider, then in California, it’s hard to believe we’ll be able to switch our model to full-time employment quickly,” Khosrowshahi told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle.Uber and fellow rideshare company Lyft both said they would appeal the judge’s ruling, which takes effect Aug. 20. 1131

A 28-year-old openly gay first-time candidate for a seat in the Hawaii state legislature defeated a Proud Boys leader in this month's election.Adrian Tam defeated Nicholas Ochs by carrying 63% of the vote in the race to represent Hawaii's District 22 — which covers Waikiki, Ala Moana, and Kakaako on Oahu — in the state House of Representatives.According to The Daily Beast and NBC News, Tam will be the only openly LGBTQ+ person currently serving in the Hawaii legislature.Tam said that throughout the general election campaign, he was "bombarded" with hateful messages from his opponents' campaign."It's almost to a harassment level," Tam told NBC News.The Ochs campaign Facebook page was removed in September for violating platform policies. He has been criticized for "offensive posts" about the Jewish and LGBTQ+ communities, according to NBC News.
