SUZHOU, Jiangsu, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Scholars and officials stressed the importance of protecting cultural heritage at the World Expo's second theme forum which opened in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province on Saturday.Culture remains the soul of a city and urban residents not only need to ensure that traffic moves smoothly, infrastructure projects are completed and their economic futures are secure, but they must also protect their cities' diversified cultures, noted Minister of Culture Cai Wu.The country's urbanization has improved people's lives, but also resulted in problems such as a disappearing cultural heritage and the sometimes monotonous appearance of cities, Cai said."If it goes on like that, it will certainly impede the growth of a city or a country and reduce the quality of people's lives," Cai warned.Further, globalization was causing more pressure to protect the nation's cultural heritage, said Sha Zukang, head of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.Cultural heritage protection should focus on providing a diversified culture rather than a monotonous culture, Sha said.With the theme focusing on cultural heritage and urban regeneration, the two-day forum was co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Executive Committee of Expo 2010 Shanghai China, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the government of Suzhou.The forum has attracted nearly 800 participants from some 20 countries and regions, as well as international organizations.Participants to the forum include Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Hans d' Orville and the French architect and designer of China's National Center for the Performing Arts, Paul Andreu.A total of 189 countries have sponsored pavilions at the six-month Shanghai World Expo, whose theme is "Better City, Better Life".

NEW YORK, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill to recognise Nanjing City of China as a "Model for International Cooperation" in order to award the city's active involvement in cooperation with the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, and this was the first Chinese city to win such an award, Li Jiansheng, executive chairman of the U.S.-China Partnership Committee, told Xinhua on Thursday.The House passed the bill, tabled by Representative John Tierney of Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, Li said, adding that this will pave the way for further cooperation between China and the United States in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, which are very conducive to build a stronger China in the future."I rise today to speak about a model for international cooperation that is said to hold promise and future opportunities for the United States," Tierney said when he was taking the floor at the House. "The City of Nanjing is working to improve the quality of life of its residents with a global initiative that has potential to create a great opportunity for some in the United States."For over a decade, Nanjing "has reached beyond the borders of the People's Republic of China to create new strategies in education, innovation and entrepreneurship, increasing the level of understanding between our two nations and stimulating U.S.- China idea exchange," he said."It is expected that this international cooperative initiative will inure to the benefit of the residents of Nanjing as well to the residents of the United States, including businesses, residents and educational institutions in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," he said.Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province in East China, has forged close ties of cooperation and partnership with Boston and Massachusetts in 2008. BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei Technologies said Motorola's charges of stealing confidential information about its cellular network equipment is groundless, the China Daily reported Saturday.Motorola on Wednesday said one of its former staff engineers, who now works with a Huawei reseller called Lemko, had provided information about a new transceiver and other Motorola technology to Ren Zhengfei, the founder of Huawei Technologies, the newspaper said."The complaint is groundless and utterly without merit. Huawei has no relationship with Lemoko, other than a reseller agreement," Huawei wrote in an e-mail to the newspaper, adding that it will defend themselves against these baseless allegations.The Chinese telecom equipment company had been planning to tap into the United States market via acquisitions.It is believed Huawei is interested in deals including a 1.2-billion-U.S. dollar Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) purchase of the wireless network assets from Motorola, and Ericssons's 1.13-billion-U.S. dollar takeover of Nortel Networks' mobile unit, according to the newspaper.Wang Yuquan, senior consultant with research firm Frost&Sullivan China, told the newspaper that though Huawei has not been successful in its efforts in the U.S. market so far, it may gain some of the customers impacted by the NSN takeover.

BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government will offer greater financial support to education for ethnic minority groups in the next decade, says a national education plan released Thursday.The Outline of China's National Plan for Medium and Long-term Education Reform and Development (2010-2020) says allocation of public educational resources shall favor minority-inhabited areas."Speeding up educational development for ethnic minority groups is of far-reaching importance for promoting socioeconomic development among the people and in the areas inhabited by them, and for enhancing unity between people of different ethnic backgrounds," the outline says.Efforts shall be made to promote coordinated development of all kinds of education at all levels in minority-inhabited areas, it says.Border counties and impoverished counties in ethnic autonomous areas shall be supported to meet government standards for the construction of school buildings for compulsory education, with special efforts devoted to building boarding schools, it says.Development in senior middle school education in the minority-inhabited areas shall be speeded up. Support shall also be granted to areas with poor education in a bid to renovate, expand or build senior middle schools, it adds.No effort shall be spared to expand vocational education in minority-inhabited areas, and more support shall be granted to secondary vocational education in these areas, according to the outline.And more support shall be granted to educational development for ethnic minorities with small populations, it says.Efforts shall also be made to advance bilingual teaching, open Chinese language classes in every school, and popularize the national common language and writing system.However, minority groups' right to be educated in their native languages shall also be respected and ensured, it says.Schools in minority-inhabited areas shall get more help from their counterparts in other parts of the country under a "pairing-assistance" program, it saysThe education for ethnic minority groups has seen marked progress in recent years, it says.
