SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This holiday season, shopping local is what will keep San Diego small businesses alive.The US Census conducted a small business survey showing a third of San Diego businesses were negatively impacted by the pandemic. The effect is visible downtown."The pandemic has definitely taken a toll on the neighborhood, I mean we've had some closures," Gaslamp Quarter Executive Director Association Michael Trimble said.Trimble said four to eight restaurants closed since March in the Gaslamp Quarter alone."Not a large percentage but still any business lost is unfortunately a business that we mourn is not here," he said.While the holiday sale signs are out, the usual crowds brought in with conventions and tourism are nowhere to be seen.Trimble said locals are vital to keeping retail and restaurants alive this holiday season."Watching all these small businesses shut down or close forever during the pandemic, it's just been really sad. So, I don't have a ton of money but Amazon doesn't need my money. You know what I mean? Like, if I can help these little shops with my or my that's just a much better use of my time," Pacific Beach Resident Bree Steffen said.When the pandemic started Steffen pledged to only shop small. She deleted her Amazon app and started exploring her neighborhood, "I feel like this whole underworld of San Diego opened up for me once I started looking at the smaller shops."She said it was a more personal experience, where she found unique gifts that had more emotional value from being hand-crafted.She launched her own small photography business in October.Now she relies on people like her to change their habits and think small."I feel like each time I at least give them a little business it just gives them a little more hope to keep going on and it's like if 100 people give them then that's enough for them to try to weather this storm," she said hopeful it will end soon.Trimble said on November 28th, also known as Small Business Saturday, if you take a picture while shopping or in the area and tag @GaslampQuarter on Instagram you will be entered to win a gift card from local establishments.Trimble said there has been one silver lining of the pandemic and that was testing the outdoor dining concept on Fifth Avenue out of necessity.That paved the way for a long coveted project to turn Fifth Avenue into a promenade. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District said Wednesday that they are coordinating and organizing with student leaders for March 14th, when students from across the country are planning for a walkout.The walkout is in response to the Florida shooting.  The student-led demonstration is meant to urge lawmakers to pass stronger gun control laws.“We support student's voice,” School Board President Kevin Beiser said in news conference Wednesday. The protests are planned at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14th.  The district wants students to help plan events at all participating schools, which are mostly high schools, according to Andrew Sharp, a district spokesman.It will be up to those school communities to come up with a plan.  Sharp says, in general, the district would rather the students keep activities on campus in so-called “teach-ins” as opposed to “walk-outs but the superintendent has said, “students will not be disciplined for participation in planned peaceful demonstrations occurring at schools.” District heads will be meeting with student leaders from “Equity Coalition” on Wednesday, March 7 to hear their ideas on the protest. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There are currently 34 active COVID-19 outbreaks at skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) across San Diego County.Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county’s public health officer, said from March 25 to Aug. 18, there were hundreds of cases reported at SNFs.“We have 86 skilled nursing facilities throughout the County of San Diego. In total, there have been 788 residents, and 515 staff members with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and this includes 153 deaths,” she said Wednesday.It’s a trend across the country, and as the nation deals with the pandemic, SNFs are reporting financial hardships.A recent survey by the American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living of 463 nursing home providers across the nation revealed that many say they’re facing a financial crisis.More than 55% reported operating at a loss, while 72% said they won’t be able to sustain operations for another year at the current pace.The report shows that most of the financial troubles were linked to the increase in costs due to COVID-19, including additional staffing, more personal protective equipment (PPE), and testing.“It could have and should have been avoided by simply adequately staffing and having appropriate PPE,” said Mike Dark, an attorney with California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform.For decades, the nonprofit based in San Francisco has fought for rights and better conditions for long-term care residents and their families in California.“At the beginning of this pandemic, nursing homes across the country had such terrible staffing and such thin PPE simply because money wasn’t being spent where it should have been,” said Dark. “It’s really up to the regulators to understand all the different sources of profit for nursing home owners and to make sure that when they hear that there’s just not enough money to pay for staffing or PPE, they really understand where those taxpayer health subsidy dollars are going.”He said the issues have been going on long before the pandemic. To avoid a disastrous situation in the future, Dark says changes need to be made at SNFs across the country immediately.“What nursing homes need to do, is staff up, train their staff, and make sure staff are adequately paid.
