BEIJING, May 12 (Xinhua) -- The China-Arab Cooperation Forum has become an important platform to enhance collective dialogue and cooperation between China and the Arab world, said Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi here on Wednesday.Yang made the remarks in a meeting with his counterparts from Arab countries attending the fourth Ministerial Meeting of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum, scheduled on Thursday and Friday in north China's port city of Tianjin.Yang hailed the steady growth of China-Arab friendly cooperative ties based on the Five Principals of Peaceful Co-existence and features mutual trust, benefits and support. He said the two sides had set up more than ten cooperative mechanisms covering politics, economy, trade, culture and education since the China-Arab Cooperation Forum was launched six years ago.The upcoming ministerial meeting is an important one to push forward further development of the forum mechanism, he said."China is ready to join hands with the Arab side to boost new progress of our cooperation, in a bid to benefit the two peoples," said Yang.Participants attending the meeting include Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Jama Ahmed Jengeli, Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh, Lebanon Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Shami, Mauritanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Naha Mint Mouknass, Libyan Secretary for Foreign Liaison and International Cooperation Mousa Kousa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates and Secretary-General Amr Mahmoud Moussa of the League of Arab States. They told Yang the Arab countries highly values their relations with China, eyeing the up-coming meeting as a new start to further boost Arab-China cooperation in various areas.Foreign ministers and officials from China and 22 Arab states will attend the two-day meeting in Tianjin.

SHANGHAI, April 30 (Xinhua) -- China tried to hold a low-carbon opening ceremony for the Shanghai World Expo Friday evening, a fair featuring ideas for sustainable urban life. From energy-efficient stereo system and LED screens to clean and smoke-free fireworks, green ideas were in full swing at the ceremony.Program menus, brochures, gift handbags and props for the ceremony were made of recyclable paper, and used milk boxes had been turned into 2,000 VIP seats. The Expo site boasts a 4.7-megawatt solar power system, China's largest, with solar panels installed on Expo buildings, according to Expo organizers. Most of the materials used to make the pavilions will be recycled, and zero-emission vehicles are used for transport within the Expo grounds, said the organizers. In addition, a wide range of "urban best practices" will be on show in many local and corporate pavilions, showing sustainable urban technologies.

BEIJING, May 13 -- The proportion of China's GDP that goes toward wages has been shrinking for 22 consecutive years, a senior trade union official said on Wednesday.Zhang Jianguo, chief of the collective contracts department with the All-China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), also warned that low pay, long working hours and poor working conditions for millions of workers are triggering conflicts and mass incidents, which pose a grave challenge to social stability. The proportion of the country's GDP that makes up wages and salaries peaked at 56.5 percent in 1983 and dropped to 36.7 percent in 2005, Zhang said."The proportion has not changed too much since then. In contrast, the proportion of returns on capital in GDP had risen by 20 percent during the period from 1978 to 2005," Zhang said in an interview posted on the ACFTU's website. The annual average wages of workers in urban areas had increased from 12,422 yuan (,819) in 2002 to 29,229 yuan in 2008, statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics showed. However, the gap between the rich and poor has been widening in the country and is also growing between urban and rural areas, different provinces and cities, as well as in different industries, he said.About one-quarter of respondents in the latest ACFTU survey said their incomes have not increased in the past five years, while 75.2 percent of them said that current income distribution is not fair. Similarly, 61 percent of those polled said the wages of laborers were low.China developed a capital-labor negotiation system for determining wages in 1994 and it was thought to be the most effective way of increasing workers' salaries. However, "since many cadres of trade unions fail to adequately protect workers' rights, it is very difficult to promote more collective contracts to benefit more workers", Zhang said.By 2009, there were more than 1.2 million collective contracts nationwide, covering more than 2.1 million enterprises and 161 million employees.
