SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The community of Barrio Logan welcomed residents to shop in the streets after months of coronavirus’ impact. Saturday, Aug. 4, the “Walk the Block” event debuted. Local businesses got permits to move service outdoors to the sidewalk, and the event celebrated the community’s resurgence of business with food, specialty items and music.Business owners like Stephanie, who runs Dreamers and Hustlers Company, a clothing shop with items branded toward the namesake, said the past few months have been hard, but she’s confident Barrio Logan shops will bounce back.“Even during these times we figure out ways we can pick ourselves up and get going again,” she said.Edgar Flores said his shop, Maxa Market, sells products made by local small businesses and entrepreneurs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The eight-legged population is overrunning parts of Balboa Park a bit earlier than usual this year.Spider season is in full bloom in San Diego. From Rancho Penasquitos to downtown, people say they are finding webs just about everywhere including hiking trailsOne person wrote on a local Reddit thread they stopped hiking because there were so many webs.Chris Conlan works with San Diego County Vector Control and says there's nothing on usual with what folks are seeing.“They hatch out in the spring and they’re small and make very small webs,” said Conlan. "But as they begin to grow over the course of the summer and beginning of fall where we are right now, they’re much larger they tend to spin bigger webs and those are they kind of webs people walk into freak out and do the spider dance."Conlan says the webs people are bumping into on trails are likely orb weavers’. They are poisonous, but their venom is not toxic to humans like other spiders.“It’s really just the black and the brown widow that people need to worry about and they tend to spin more out of the way webs in corners and dark places," said Conlan. "They’re not the type of web you’re just going to go walking through."Conlan’s advice for folks’ encountering spider’s homes is as good anyone’s.“Carry a stick in front of you,” said Conlan with a laugh. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Del Mar Fairgrounds says it faces closing for good unless it receives emergency state funding.The fairgrounds, which is owned by the state, says its operations are self-funded and relies on event revenues to operate. Without events like the San Diego County Fair, horse racing, several smaller festivals, and more, the fairgrounds' revenue has been severely depleted. The venue had already lost the KAABOO music festival heading into this year as well, which was set to move to Petco Park this year.The fairgrounds says it needs million in relief aid from California in order to survive."From creating cherished family memories and generating 0 million in economic impact, to serving as an essential evacuation site during wildfires and providing nearly 4,000 full-time-equivalent jobs, losing the Fairgrounds would leave a giant void in San Diego as we know it," a release from the venue said.Fairgrounds officials are calling on the community to urge their local leaders to support emergency aid from the state.The fairgrounds has also set up a website here to help locals show their support and connect with local and state leaders to urge them to help. 1194

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Navy confirmed Thursday that the suspected Golden State Killer attended and graduated basic training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego.Officials say Joseph DeAngelo, 72, graduated from the training center after attending from October to December of 1964.DeAngelo also served aboard the Boston-class guided-missile cruiser USS Canberra (pictured below) during the Vietnam War.The Naval Training Center closed in 1997 and is now known as Liberty Station. The San Diego's District Attorney is also reexamining cold cases in San Diego that may have links to DeAngelo. TIMELINE: Major events in Golden State killer caseNew information Thursday also helps paint the picture of how authorities were able to catch the man accused of killing at least 12 people and raping at least 45 women.Prosecutors say authorities used genealogical sites to find a DNA match for DeAngelo, according to the Associated Press.Investigators compared the DNA collected from a crime scene of the Golden State killer to online genetic profiles and found a match: A relative of DeAngelo. Investigators didn't go into further detail such as which company they went through. DeAngelo is accused of committing the murders, rapes and more than 120 burglaries in the decade spanning between 1976 and 1986.RELATED: Suspect identified, arrested in East Area Rapist/Golden State Killer caseMost of the crimes happened near Sacramento and in the Bay Area.The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The helicopter pilot who died when his aircraft crashed in Central California while fighting a wildfire on Wednesday was a former ABC 10News pilot.Michael John Fournier, 52, of Rancho Cucamonga, died when his Bell UH-1H helicopter crashed during a water-dropping mission about 10 miles south of Coalinga, Calif. Fournier was the only person on board, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office (FSO).Investigators were called out to the scene at about 11 a.m., but were not able to make it to the crash site until about 8 p.m. due to the rugged terrain and intense conditions. Once they reached the site, FSO said crews draped an American flag over Fournier's body and carried his body out of the site."One, he was on the front lines helping in an emergency. Two, we did not know if he was former military or law enforcement. We felt it was just the appropriate thing to do," FSO wrote on Facebook.Fournier leaves behind a wife and two daughters. A GoFundMe has been posted here to assist his family with expenses.Fournier was working with Fillmore-based Guardian Helicopters at the time of the crash, according to the Associated Press. Recently, he had flown as part of repair work for Southern California Edison. In the mid to late 1990s, Fournier was a contracted backup pilot for ABC 10News in San Diego for about two years, said Kyle Anastasio. He’s known Fournier for nearly 28 years. He says Fournier was trying to break into the flying industry when they met.Anastasio was the primary Sky10 pilot and taught Fournier how to fly the news chopper.“He was a good pilot,” Anastasio said. “That’s why it’s so devastating.”Anastasio says Fournier went on to have a great career in flying.“He took this whole flying helicopters thing to the moon with all the companies he went to, flew utility work and medevac. He was very well known in the industry,” Anastasio said.He said Fournier loved two things in life: his family and flying.“Mike was a rock-solid individual, a lot of people are missing him right now,” Anastasio said.Timothy Gaughen, a former ABC 10News photojournalist, said working beside Fournier was one of the high points in his career."Fast, efficient, fun, it was always great. It was always enjoyable," Gaughen said. "There's certain people you remember from your career. I still remember it as if it was yesterday ... Just a pleasant, pleasant personality."Gaughen said when it was time to get in the air, Fournier was an absolute professional."He was just a down to Earth person ... but when it was time to get the shot, boom, we were a two-man team," Gaughen said.San Diego is no stranger to wildfires and Fournier worked his share of capturing images from above while at ABC 10News, Gaughen says. He adds that Fournier was a safety-conscious man who loved what he did. "There's something in helicopter pilots, they live and breathe being in the air. He died doing what he loved.
