WASHINGTON, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official said on Monday that China will continue to cooperate with other countries to cope with the current financial crisis.     "For the international community, the most urgent task is to join efforts to stem further deterioration and spread of the crisis -- the major threat to global growth -- and restore global economic and financial stability," said Yi Gang, vice governor of the People's Bank of China     "China will continue to strengthen its cooperation with concerned countries and hopes that all governments will work together to overcome the current difficulties and restore international financial stability," he said in a statement at the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank.     He urged the two Bretton Woods Institutions to "fulfill their mandates to maintain global monetary and financial stability and facilitate sustainable, balanced growth."     The fund should give the surveillance priority to the ongoing financial turmoil, deepen its analysis, learn lessons, and listen to the opinions of member countries, said the senior official of China's central bank.     "From the medium- and long-term perspective, the fund must address the inherent deficiencies of the current international monetary system and foster an international financial architecture adaptive to the evolving global economy and financial markets," he noted.     As the largest multilateral development institution, the World Bank should re-assess the challenges confronting the developing countries -- soaring food and fuel prices, higher financing costs, deteriorating balance of payments positions, and mounting inflationary pressures, said Yi Gang.     "With the advantages of its financing capacity and expertise, the World Bank should urge the developed countries to shoulder their due responsibilities in stabilizing the global economy through targeted measures, carried out in an even-handed and professional fashion," he said.     Yi Gang also stressed the fundamentals of the Chinese economy are "solid and resilient."     "We are confident we can weather the financial turmoil," he said. "With the global economic slowdown, it is important that China maintains its stable and relatively rapid growth."

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao called for establishing a fair, open, reasonable multilateral trade system of non-discrimination in the world on Tuesday.     "We oppose protectionism in investment and trade," he said during a meeting with visiting British Finance Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, who is attending the first China-UK economic and financial dialogue.     Wen vowed to work with Britain and other countries to push the Doha round toward a comprehensive and balanced result. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) meets with Alistair Darling, British chancellor of the exchequer and special representative of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, in Beijing, capital of China, April 15, 2008. Alistair Darling is in Beijing to attend the first China-Britain economic and financial dialogue.    He said the international community was facing increasing opportunities and challenges as economic globalization developed.     Both China and Britain were influential countries and should strengthen their dialogue based on mutual respect, equality, and reciprocity so as to expand common ground and overcome disputes, he added.     Wen hoped China and Britain would take the economic and financial dialogue as a platform to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.     Darling, visiting China as British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's special representative, said Britain viewed relations with China from a long-term perspective.     He said Britain would like to promote dialogue with China on handling issues like economy, finance, and the environment.     He said protectionism on trade was wrong, adding that Britain supported recognizing China's complete market economy status and opposed measures boycotting Chinese commodities.     Darling arrived in Beijing on Monday afternoon. He met with Vice-Premier Wang Qishan early Tuesday.

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's State Council, the Cabinet, has started the first-class national food safety emergency response to deal with the tainted Sanlu milk powder incident that has caused kidney stones in at least 432 babies.     The State Council has set up a national leading group comprising officials from the Health Ministry, the quality watchdog and local governments for the incident.     A preliminary investigation has confirmed the Sanlu baby milk powder contaminated by melamine was the cause of kidney stones in infants, said an official statement released here Saturday evening.     The melamine substance found in some of the Sanlu products was deliberately added to increase the protein percentage in raw milk or milk powder, it said.     The statement said the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council attached high importance to the issue, urging all-out efforts in treating the affected babies. The patients will be given free medical treatment and the cost will be shouldered by the government.     Meanwhile, the State Council urged a thorough overhaul of the milk powder market, directing the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) to join other departments to check all the brands of baby formulas circulating in the market, and immediately pull those disqualified products off shelves.     The reason why the Sanlu baby formula was contaminated must be found out as soon as possible, the State Council said, directing the local government and relevant departments to overhaul all the links including the milk powder production, cow raising, raw milk collection and dairy processing.     Based on the findings, the criminals and all those responsible would be severely punished, it said.     Relevant local government and departments should draw lessons from the incident and improve the food safety and quality supervision mechanism to ensure the food safety of the public, it added.     The State Council has directed the provincial government of Hebei, where the Sanlu group is based, to halt production of the group. An investigation team set up by the health ministry and other departments is also in the province to probe into the cause, and the quality watchdog AQSIQ is conducting an all-round overhaul of baby milk powder producers across the country
