Kate Brown says “dozens of people” are missing from the large wildfires that have burned across the state.Brown made the announcement at a news briefing Friday afternoon, and said the reports of missing people come from blazes in southern Oregon near Medford and the northern part of the state near the state capital of Salem.At least four wildfire deaths of have been reported in Oregon.Hundreds of firefighters, aided by helicopters dropping fire retardant and water, battled two large wildfires Friday that threatened to merge near the most populated part of Oregon, including the suburbs of Portland.The number of people ordered to evacuate statewide because of fires rose to an estimated 500,000 — more than 10% of the state’s 4.2 million people, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management reported late Thursday.The Oregon Convention Center in Portland was among the buildings being transformed into shelters for evacuees. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A bicyclist riding with a group of cyclists was seriously injured Saturday when he was struck by a motorcycle in Pacific Beach, police said.The collision happened at 3:14 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue, according to Officer John Buttle of the San Diego Police Department.A 23-year-old man riding a 2017 Harley Davidson Sportster was southbound in the 4200 block of Ingraham as a group of cyclists were eastbound in the 1500 block of Reed Avenue, Buttle said.The cyclists entered the intersection and the motorcycle struck one of them, a 49-year-old man, the officer said.The motorcyclist suffered road rash to his right leg, Buttle said. The bicyclist suffered a broken left femur and broken ribs. Medics took the cyclist to a hospital.Officers from the SDPD traffic division were investigating the collision, Buttle said.Ingraham was closed in both directions at Thomas and Oliver avenues and was expected to last a couple of hours, the SDPD said. 1012

SAN DIEGO — San Diegans can participate in AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine trial, which recently showed 90 percent effectiveness under a certain dosage.AstraZeneca announced Monday that its vaccine was 90 percent effective when participants started with a half dose, followed by a full dose at least four weeks later. It is currently seeking participants through UC San Diego Health and other partners for its ongoing trials. Full doses given four weeks apart were 62 percent effective in the trial. “These findings show that we have an effective vaccine that will save many lives," said Professor Andrew Pollard, Chief Investigator of the Oxford Vaccine Trial, in a statement released by AstraZeneca. "Excitingly, we’ve found that one of our dosing regimens may be around 90 percent effective and if this dosing regime is used, more people could be vaccinated with planned vaccine supply."Elana Godebu, a UC San Diego urologist, said she has seen the impacts of Coronavirus firsthand. She is currently practicing at El Centro Regional Medical Center, affiliated with UC San Diego. She says the center is filling up because of a rise in local cases and patients coming up from Mexico. SAN DIEGO - A 13-year-old Tierrasanta, California boy is battling for his life after family members say he was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis.A week ago Sunday, Grant Eyles started throwing up while his mother drove him and his siblings back from Los Angeles.  He quickly developed a fever, but didn't get worse until Thursday, when he lost mobility on his right side and became confused.His mother said a battery of tests pointed to bacterial meningitis, where membranes around the brain and spinal cord become inflamed, and it started with a common ailment."It was a complication essentially from a sinus infection.
