SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — High surf forced the west wall at La Jolla's Children's Pool and Ocean Beach Pier closed Saturday.A high surf advisory was issued for the county's coast from Saturday to Sunday at 4 p.m. Surf is expected to peak Saturday with waves up to 10 feet possible along the county's coastline. Sunday, surf conditions are expected to hold through the day.Beachgoers were warned of strong rip currents and possible beach erosion during the surf event. Lifeguards asked that anyone heading to San Diego's beach hold off on water activities and watch the bluffs until the high surf passes.Because of the surf, San Diego Fire-Rescue lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach Pier on Friday just before 10 a.m. and were expected to keep the pier closed through at least Saturday morning. In La Jolla, lifeguards said the west wall of the Children's Pool was closed to visitors, as waves crashed over the barrier. 916

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hate crime charges were filed against two men accused of assaulting a Black journalist who was covering a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Imperial Beach in June. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced felony assault and battery charges, and hate crime allegations, were filed against 38-year-old Jeffrey Brooks and 32-year-old Henry Brooks Jr. in connection with the June 7 incident at a beach near Veterans Park.Warrants have been issued for the arrest of the two men.RELATED: Man says he was sucker punched at Imperial Beach protestThe DA’s Office alleged Brooks and Brooks Jr. were at the peaceful march in Imperial Beach when they began “verbally and physically antagonizing the protesters.”At one point, Brooks Jr. allegedly threw eggs at a group of protesters.“While recording the scene, the victim was sucker punched in the head by Jeffrey Brooks, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the ground,” the DA’s Office said in a news release. If convicted of all charges, Brooks faces three years in custody; Brooks Jr. faces six years.District Attorney Summer Stephan said, “Protecting our community from hate crimes is a priority for my office because hate erodes our right to equality and fairness, and it leaves an impact on the victim and everyone who shares the victim’s race. We will not tolerate the intimidation or violent interference with protesters or a journalist who are exercising their First Amendment rights.” 1492

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Father Joe's Villages hosted two Thanksgiving meal services Wednesday for homeless residents in San Diego, but perhaps no one was more thankful than the people who helped prepare the food.Three chefs-in-training in the Father Joe’s Culinary Arts Program spent days preparing the turkey dinner, which was served to an estimated 2,300 to 2,600 people.“They changed my life by far,” student Brian Anziano said of Father Joe’s.Anziano said he got involved in “stupid stuff” last year that left him homeless, but at the suggestion of friend, he began turning his life around with the help of Father Joe’s.Anziano enrolled in the 15-week culinary course, considered the most rigorous of the 10 workforce development programs offered by Father Joe’s.“They buy your shoes, they buy your pants, they buy your uniform,” he said. “Everything you need.”The massive Thanksgiving meal is kind of like a midterm, said Culinary Arts Program instructor chef Theresa Fields.“We work 14 hour days, 16 hour days. We’re always on call,” said student Lister Lane with a smile.Lane said his dream is to graduate and open his own restaurant. “And I want to give back to the homeless like they helped me,” he said.Past graduates have gone from these kitchens to jobs at Kansas City Barbeque, PETCO Park, the Hard Rock Hotel, Amplified Ale Works and more, FIelds said.Father Joe’s said about 80 students have graduated from its various workforce training programs so far, and they’re on pace to graduate about 100 students by the end of the year. New programs, including one in hydroponics, are planned for next year. 1620

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — From Iraq to San Diego, it's a marriage that has lasted 75 years.Elias and Naima Romaya have been inseparable since the end of World War II. They met when they were young and growing up in Mosul, Iraq. Now over 100 years old, Elias is a little hard of hearing, but still loves his wife deeply. The couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this week, and one of their granddaughters, Lana, helped share their story"He used to tutor her when she was in high school, and they fell in love," Lana says. "The American dream they wanted, they wanted a better life, of course, they were under Saddam Hussein's reign at that time, so they just wanted a better life for their future."That was more than 30 years ago. So why did they choose Rancho San Diego as their new home?"Because it was similar weather to Iraq and they just wanted a similar, warm and sunny environment," Lana said. The celebration came with a trip to the Hotel del Coronado and a cake. Unfortunately, they weren't able to see all 13 of their grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren due to the pandemic."Just now with COVID we couldn't all get together but it was a nice, cozy celebration with then just celebrating their love for each other," says Lana. It's a love as strong as a diamond — fitting for their 75th year, also considered the "diamond anniversary.""He says he's never loved anyone else besides my grandmother and he hates to be apart from her," Lana adds.Elias says the secret to a long and successful marriage is finding love at first sight, the rest seems to take care of itself. 1590
