TAHOE CITY, Calif. (AP) -- Officials say California's popular Squaw Valley Ski Resort will change its name because the word "squaw" is a derogatory term for Native American women.Ron Cohen, president and COO of Squaw Valley Alpine Meadow, says the decision was reached after consulting with Native American groups and extensive research into the etymology and history of the term "squaw."It derived from the Algonquin language, may have once simply meant "woman," but over generations, the word morphed into a misogynist and racist term to disparage indigenous women. The new name is expected to be announced next year.Squaw Valley Ski Resort was the scene of the 1960 Winter Olympics. 692

Tesla on Thursday recalled about 123,000 Model S sedans, asking customers with cars built before April of 2016 to have their power steering bolts replaced.A Tesla spokesperson said the company has observed "excessive corrosion" of the part in some cold climates where a certain type of road salt is used.No injuries or accidents have been reported in connection with the issue, the spokesperson said.A Tesla spokesperson said that if the bolts fail, the driver should still be able to control the vehicle. The issue can make the car more difficult to steer at low speeds and to parallel park, and it should "not materially affect control at high speed."The company sent out emails to Model S owners who have cars included in the recall. The Model S has been lauded for its safety ratings, but news of this recall comes at a rough time for Tesla. Its stock price has plunged more than 25% over the past month. Investors are worried about the startup's ability to deliver on its first mass-market car, the Model 3, which has been plagued by manufacturing woes.Tesla's stock sank nearly 4% during after-hours trading Thursday after news broke about the Model S recall. 1171

State legislators will vote Monday on an emergency bill to block evictions across California when a moratorium expires on Sept. 1.The bill would extend the moratorium protections for tenants through January 2021, but evictions could resume in February. This bill, called the COVID-19 Tenant Relief Act of 2020, does two major things to protect tenants:1) It converts unpaid rent from March 1 to Aug. 31 to civil debt, meaning a tenant cannot be evicted for nonpayment. Instead, that person can ultimately be taken to small claims court.2) It prevents eviction of tenants who pay at least 25 percent of their rent from Sept. 1. to Jan 31, 2021. If a tenant pays at least 25 percent, the rest would be converted to civil debt. Otherwise, a landlord can begin eviction proceedings Feb. 1, 2021.Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would sign the bill once it reaches his desk. The Southern California Rental Housing Association expressed major concerns about the legislation, saying it does not protect against financial ruin for landlords. In a statement, it said the bill doesn't provide rental income assistance and does not guarantee landlords will ever get the money they are owed. The bill requires a two-thirds vote, and is expected to be taken up in both houses of the state legislature Monday. 1302

The Australian refugee deal that US President Donald Trump once derided as "stupid" and "horrible" is happening. The first group of refugees being held at Australian offshore detention centers on Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island will leave for the US in the "coming weeks," the Australian government has confirmed in a statement."There will be about 25 (refugees) from both Manus and Nauru, will be going to the United States and I just want to thank again President Trump for continuing with that arrangement," Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull?said in an interview with CNN's Australia affiliate Seven News.Under the terms of the arrangement, refugees selected by the Australian authorities for resettlement in the US are not guaranteed entry into the country. They must first pass a strict vetting process -- which can take months. An official at the US State Department told CNN on Wednesday that to date, they have determined one individual meets resettlement requirements and will be moved in "the coming weeks." The official said he expects the first batch of approved refugees to be notified within days."We expect refugees to travel to the United States in the coming weeks," the official said.Trump made it clear to Turnbull he was not a fan of the deal during their first phone call following Trump's inauguration in January, details of which were later revealed in a?leaked transcript?published by the Washington Post in August."I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country. And now I am agreeing to take 2,000 people and I agree I can vet them, but that puts me in a bad position. It makes me look so bad and I have only been here a week," Trump said."This is a big deal," Turnbull responded. "It is really, really important to us that we maintain it. It does not oblige you to take one person that you do not want.""This is a stupid deal. This deal will make me look terrible," Trump said, adding later "I think it is a horrible deal, a disgusting deal that I would have never made."The deal was negotiated by former US President Barack Obama and involved the transfer of 1,250 refugees from Australia in exchange for a group of Central American refugees from camps in Costa Rica.Towards the end of their phone call, Trump appeared to concede that he would stick with the deal, but he said he would tell the American people that "I hate it." 2432

Technology is constantly evolving, and often times, it makes things more convenient.Charley Sullivan uses smart technology a lot, specifically her Amazon Echo. The Echo’s virtual assistant, Alexa, will read Charley’s emails aloud to her, check the weather and more. She thought it’d be a great gift for her husband, Bobby, but he knew she’d enjoy it more.“I knew how much she was going to use that thing,” he says. “I mean, she uses it to read her bible listened to radio programs; she plays games on it.” Amazon’s Alexa has brought convenience to homes everywhere, by playing music, checking the news, ordering groceries and more. But it’s especially helpful when you can't see. Both Charley and Bobby are blind.“Well, it's so wonderful,” Charley says of the device. “And when I was a child, we had braille, and we had books on records.”Now, the two are using Alexa, along cell phones and an Apple watch to make life easier. While they wish the technology could do even more, the two are grateful.“If you are going to be blind, this is the time, the day and time to be blind, with all the technology that there is out there today,” Charley says. 1155
