Synthetic weed tainted with rat poison has made its way to Milwaukee and it’s been linked to at least three illnesses in the city in 24 hours. Dr. Jon Meiman with the state health department says the effects of the fake drug can be “unpredictable,” with side effects ranging from nausea to seizures and even death. "The synthetic cannabinoids that we're seeing here are causing severe bleeding, and that's very unusual,” Meiman said. The synthetic pot can be found at gas stations and other convenience stores sold under names like K2 or Spice. The drug is meant to minim the effects of marijuana but can be far more dangerous. "They work on the same parts of the brain that marijuana does, but they can have very different effects depending on the specific chemicals," Meiman said. The health department says it’s sent two people to the hospital in Milwaukee. In nearby Chicago, the poison-laced product is linked to three deaths. Health officials are trying to trace the source of the rat poison-synthetic pot.  1061

Survivors of alleged sexual abuse at the hands of priests nationwide are set to announce a federal class-action lawsuit aimed at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.In the lawsuit, the group and their attorneys say the Conference "knowingly concealed" the identities and actions of known abusers. So they're calling for the bishops to release the names and files of every known accused priest in the country.They're due to make the announcement at 1:00 Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore, where those bishops are for the final day of their annual meeting. 574

The Boston Marathon clarified on Sunday its policy on allowing transgender athletes to compete in its annual event, saying that athletes do not have to share their gender history with race officials, NPR reported. The Marathon also confirmed that transgender runners have competed in past events. "We don't require that runners outline their gender identity history with us, so we can't say for certain how many trans runners are in our race," the Boston Athletic Association, organizer of the annual Boston Marathon, said in a statement to NPR. "We do know that we have had several transgender runners in the past."Last month in the Canadian publication "Running Magazine," three transgender women told the magazine that they plan on competing as women in this year's Boston Marathon, which will be held on April 16. The story drew questions on whether transgender athletes competing as women would be at an advantage. STORY - One of the two girls who was molested by a La Jolla realtor faced the child predator at his sentencing Friday. Donald Hickey received a 25-years-to-life term as part of his plea deal in five felonies. In July, Hickey admitted to lewd and lascivious acts with a child and possession of child pornography. Prosecutors said the molestations occurred between 2009 and 2012. Hickey was caught thanks to a cyber tip submitted to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Hickey apologized to his victims in court in August, saying “I’m sorry for everything that's happened. I take responsibility for it and I hope they do heal from it.'' ``No teenager should be in a situation where they sit down and think about what they're going to say to a pedophile,'' one of the girls said after Hickey pleaded guilty. ``No parent should have to decide whether or not to tell their child that they have been assaulted.
