SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sandy Sim came all the way from Fallbrook just to find out that she was locked out of 101 Ash Street. She was one of multiple people who came to the downtown building thinking the skyscraper was open for city business. Instead, it was shuttered Wednesday after the county found traces of asbestos on one the 17th floor. "I think the building should be removed, should be brought down, and just put up another building. It will probably be cheaper too," said Ignacio Alcaraz, a Spring Valley resident who had just left City Hall. RELATED: City Council leader calls for audit of city building shuttered due to asbestosThe city has been spending ,000 per day in a lease-to-own agreement valued at .5 million. The city inked the deal for the former Sempra Headquarters in 2017 with the plan of moving 1,100 employees into it to save on rent. But the building has remained vacant for all but about a month since then, after the city discovered numerous problems and needed repairs. City workers finally moved in about a month ago, but vacated last weekend after the county served the city with a violation for the asbestos."I think it's taken a horrible toll," said Councilwoman Barbara Bry, who took office after the deal was signed. "I was downtown over the weekend and noticed workers literally wheeling boxes and files and chairs out of 101 Ash."The city insists the building is safe, conducting 235 air quality tests in the last few months, and that it closed the building in an abundance of caution. Bry is now calling for an audit into how the city could do a deal like this. She said she cannot understand why the city would take possession of a property that old "as is.""That is stupid to do when you are doing a long-term lease purchase on a building that was built in the 1960s," Bry said. Bry has forwarded her request to the city's auditor. Meanwhile, the Mayor's office has authorized the city to hire an outside consultant to determine how this deal came to be. 2005

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Arts Park @ Chollas Creek has been helping young people for almost 20 years now."The reason this place was started was there was a lot of vandalism in the community. I was part of the problem then, I consider myself part of the solution," said Jose Venegas, a co-founder, and Program Coordinator at Writerz Blok. During his teenage years, Venegas turned to graffiti. "It was that or gang bang really, to be honest, I grew up in a neighborhood where there was a lot of gang activity, a lot of drugs."A twist of fate led his friends to tag a vacant property in Southeast San Diego owned by the Jacobs Center. Rather than make the teens someone else's problem, the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation embraced them, donating the space and funding materials. "We encounter a lot of youth who show artistic expression but have never had a mentor or seen professional artists doing murals, graffiti," said Bennett Peji, Vice President of Impact and Partnership for the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation. Their mission is to foster a thriving community envisioned and realized by its residents.“The identify of a place should really reflect the the community that lives there but that’s not often the case," said Peji. Jacobs Center donated the property and funded materials to make the Arts Park a reality. Writerz Blok artists have able to help hundreds of teens and they now do workshops in high schools as well as the East Mesa Juvenile Detention Center."It's a very soothing feeling, it's like therapy," said Venegas. "I feel like this place has done more than offer a space to paint."The Arts Park is open Monday-Friday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. It will also be open one Saturday a month in the summer. 1755

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Squatters turned a remodeled home in the College Area into a drug den, days after it was listed on as a vacation rental. Two weeks ago, John, who asked us not to use his full name, listed his four-bedroom home on the site VRBO, complete with new mattresses, comforters, and sheets. This past Sunday, a television installer entered the home to put up three TVs."He heard two people run out of the hallway out the back of the house," said John.RELATED: Residents concerned over rash of vandalism in Chula VistaPhotos taken by the installer show part of the scene they left behind: trashed bedrooms and beds littered with electric scooter parts. Also on the beds were crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia. Burn marks adorned three of the beds. John and his girlfriend had spent more than a week making the place perfect. "Just sad. She was crying out the break-in. Upsetting considering how hard we worked and how much money we spent," said John.John isn't sure how the intruders got past the locked doors. But once inside, it's clear they made themselves comfortable, using John's tools and toiletries, and eating food meant for future guests. It appears they had been living there for days.RELATED: Team 10 investigates wild, violent parties at short term vacation rentals"Wondering what went on there is not good to visualize in the future, so definitely feeling violated," said John. It's a violation revisited on Tuesday morning, when the surveillance cameras showed a figure on the patio, and soon after, a person in a hoodie in one of the bedrooms. When police showed up, the burglar had disappeared. John is now planning major upgrades in security.John still plans to list his home on vacation rental sites, but it will cost him. He spent ,000 furnishing the bedrooms, and many of those items will have to be repurchased. 1858

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students were outraged with the football home opener tailgate at SDCCU Stadium Saturday. This comes after an email was sent last October by the university declaring new rules for tailgates. It reads "students and recognized student organizations with more than 25 people in attendance are required to register for tailgating.""People are bummed but I haven’t heard that many people upset about it," SDSU Freshman Caitlin said. The new form requires organizations to acknowledge kegs, glassware, and underage drinking is prohibited. They also check a box acknowledging failure to follow any of the guidelines could result in citation or arrest as well as loss of tailgating privileges and/or game tickets."I heard it was a little too crazy so they had to dial it back and now they’re making people register," Caitlin said."Last year there were thousands out here, this year there’s hundreds maybe," SDSU Senior Brady McIntyre said in frustration.Multiple students came up to 10News angry with the restrictions and how they stifle greek life.10News spoke with a representative with Student Life at SDSU who said the registration process was to bring more organization and give groups a safer place to hang out. "Honestly the university put a bunch of restrictions on us which is super respectable, there are students who need to chill out out here, but it’s not as fun as it used to be," SDSU Senior Jack Brubacker said.Last year's home opener tailgate a raucous party, where students rocked a truck while dancing with red solo cups in hand. Spectators saw throngs of people having a great time. This year, it looked calmer with many small groups standing around talking, eating pizza and drinking from those same red solo cups. 1777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld has confirmed that the company completed layoffs Friday, a spokesperson confirmed to 10News. It’s unclear exactly how many people were laid off in San Diego or companywide, but the move comes as SeaWorld continues to see an increase in attendance at its parks. The move also comes as SeaWorld San Diego gets ready to open a new attraction called Tidal Twister this May.
