(CNN) -- We've all been tempted to bring a little bit of paradise home from our holidays. But the urge has backfired on a French couple, who are facing up to six years in prison for removing sand from a beach in Sardinia, where they had been on vacation. The Italian island's white sand is protected, and tourists face fines and even jail time for removing it from local beaches -- but the couple say they did not realize they were committing a crime.Police in the northern city of Porto Torres found the sand while making routine checks on cars waiting to board a ferry to Toulon in southern France. They spotted some bottles filled with sand through the window of the car, and arrested the couple, a man and woman in their 40s, police told CNN.Overall, 14 plastic bottles containing around 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of white sand were seized, police said. The couple were reported to a court in the city of Sassari for aggravated theft and they risk a fine of up to €3,000 (,300) and between one and six years' imprisonment.Police told CNN that the tourists said they were unaware of the laws about removing sand, but noted that the island's beaches have signs in several languages informing visitors.Theft of white sand and rocks from Sardinia's beaches is very common, a police officer said, and there is an illegal market for them on the internet."The people of Sardinia are very angry with tourists that steal shells and sand, because it's a theft (from) future generations that also puts at risk a delicate environment," the officer told CNN.Sand thieves are usually picked up at airports, in bag searches and by scanners.A Facebook page, "Sardegna Rubata e Depredata" -- "Sardinia, robbed and plundered" -- which was set up by a group of security officials from the island's airports, campaigns against the depletion of Sardinia's beaches."The purpose of the page is to raise public awareness about this problem," one of the page administrators previously told CNN Travel."During the last 20 years of activity we have seized tens and tens of tons of material ... Every year we take care to bring everything back to the places of origin at the end of the summer season." 2183

(KGTV) ¡ª In-state tuition for the University of California system will not increase for the next academic year, UC President Janet Napolitano announced Wednesday. The university system says this is the seventh time in eight years tuition for California residents has not been increased.¡°We are optimistic about our strong partnership with the governor and the legislature and will work collectively to identify additional resources, in lieu of tuition revenues, to ensure that UC students can succeed,¡± said Napolitano. The estimated tuition for California residents during the 2018-19 academic year is currently about ,300 (living on campus) to ,400 (living off campus.) That includes tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, and personal expenses and transportation. For non-residents, it's about ,300 (on campus) to ,400 (off campus.)UC's tuition decision comes as the college system sets out a new slate of goals to achieve by 2030:Help 200,000 additional students earn a degree; Improve rates of timely graduation and degree attainment; Close graduation gaps for low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students; Increase graduate degrees to advance economic mobility and support industries critical to California; andRecruit and grow more diverse, accomplished faculty.¡°Accessibility and affordability represent UC¡¯s core values as a public institution, and we need to provide this generation of students with the quality of education they deserve,¡± said UC Board of Regents Chair George Kieffer. ¡°So this year, rather than raise tuition, we will once again join our students in advocating for additional resources from the state.¡± 1677

(KGTV) ¨C Federal investigators are continuing to look into the backgrounds and motives of the El Paso and Dayton shooting suspects to determine if the shootings were instances of hate crime that may have been inspired by the Poway synagogue shooting.<br /><br />The El Paso shooter was taken into custody after killing at least 20 at a Walmart store on Aug. 3. Investigators said the 21-year-old suspect pulled the trigger just 20 minutes after posting a racist manifesto.<br /> <br />Hours later, police in Dayton shot and killed a man who opened fire at a downtown entertainment district. Multiple people, including the gunman¡¯s sister, died at the hands of the gunman.<br /> <br />Sociologist Dr. Pete Simi studies political extremism and violence at Chapman University. He said white extremism is not what it used to be.<br /> <br /><b>RELATED: <a href="https://www.10news.com/news/national/8chan-goes-offline-after-cloudflare-pulls-support-for-website-used-by-el-paso-suspect">Online forum 8chan goes offline in light of El Paso shooting</a></b><br /><br />"At an earlier point in time, we were seeing some of these lone actors who were middle-aged or even older in some cases," Simi said. "Whereas in the last few years, we have been seeing it trend in the opposite direction. Pretty young."<br /><br />Simi also said the young, tech-savvy generation connects with like-minded people on anonymous online forums like 8chan.<br /> <br />In his manifesto published on 8Chan, the El Paso shooter posted: "In general, I support the Christchurch shooter and his manifesto. This attack is a response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas."<br /><br />Earlier this year, the suspect in the Poway synagogue shooting shared a similar message on 8chan in which he also praised the work of the New Zealand mosque shooter.<br /><br />"In some cases, they talk about is how you could've been more active, or you could've killed more people if they had done X-Y-Z," Simi said. "Or they're discussing the relative merits of this type of violence and pros and cons. It's really a cesspool environment."<br /><br />At this point, the Dayton suspect's motive has not been confirmed. But he too is a young, lone-acting shooter who wore body armor. FBI investigators are now digging into his digital background to find answers.<br /><br />"What may connect them though is there may be some kind of copycat aspect to it," Simi said.<br /><br />In light of the mass shootings, Frederick Brennan, the founder of 8chan, demanded the site be shut down.<br /><br />He said he created the website in 2013 as a free speech forum, but relinquished ownership in 2015. 2826
