There’s a nationwide debate about whether the U.S. should find ways to get the coal industry back up or train workers for new jobs.In eastern Kentucky, families were rocked by a regional recession when the coal industry took a big hit seven years ago.'Their exact words were, 'Due to the decline in the coal market, we're going to have to let you go,' and suddenly I found myself in a place where I had no idea what to do,” said James Johnson, who was let go in 2014.Johnson, who worked as a coal truck supplier in Pikeville, Kentucky, was left at a crossroad. But Johnson found a way to stay in his hometown. He went from coal to coding."Going on four years later, we're still hanging in here," says Johnson, who learned coding with several other former coal workers.Johnson's story isn't unique. It seems like everywhere you go in Pikeville, people are finding ways to survive, outside of the coal.About 21 percent of mining jobs have been eliminated statewide since 2016, forcing people to explore other industries. After nine years working in the mines, resident Harvey Maynard had to look for a new career after being laid off 10 months ago. His skills brought him to baking!"Right now, it's baking donuts!” says Maynard. “Which is a huge change.”Maynard doesn’t just bake—he even decorates, too."Even as a kid I loved to draw, paint, and color,” says Maynard. “I was always very artistic."New jobs are even moving to the small eastern Kentucky city to help. A new distillery opened one month ago; the owners wanted to build there, specifically to help hire coal miners who were out of work.It was a blessing for people like Michael Preston, who after 16 years of working in the coal industry, decided to go back to school. Preston got his associates in electrical technology, and now, he’s the maintenance manager at Dueling Barrels Distillery.     It's a place you look forward to coming every morning,” says Preston. 1950

Two men and a woman were killed."This is a very heinous act," Avila said. "We don't know exactly what the motive of the person was, but it was certainly a terrible act."IMAGES | Photos capture chaotic scene after Thornton Walmart shootingPolice originally reported "multiple parties are down" after they were called around 6 p.m. to the store located at 9901 Grant Street in Thornton. The store was evacuated as authorities arrived on scene.Police found the victims in the south entrance. The two men were pronounced dead at the scene. The female victim was transported to Denver Health where she later succumbed to her injuries. Authorities have yet to identify the victims. No other physical injuries were reported. However, police say several people received medical attention for anxiety. Several distraught employees could be seen in the parking lot comforting each other.Investigators say there is no indication that terrorism was a motive, but have not ruled anything out at this point. They are still interviewing hundreds of witnesses and going through surveillance video.Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were helping police in the investigation. The shooting at the busy shopping center forced customers to either hide in the store or frantically run for the doors.Witness Harold Stevens said he was in the store with his son when he heard at least three shots. He said an employee directed him and his son to a back door where they were able to escape safely. 1890

Thousands of women are downing tools, boycotting domestic tasks and occupying the streets of Spain as part of a global strike on International Women's Day."Today we claim a society free of oppression, exploitation and sexual violence," said the organizers of the nation's first "feminist strike" in their manifesto. "We call for rebellion and the struggle against the alliance between patriarchy and capitalism that wants us to be docile, submissive and silent."Twenty-four hours of strikes and rallies kicked off at midnight in Madrid. Protesters gathered at the central square banging pots and pans as the city council buildings behind them were lit up in purple, the official color of #IWD2018.As light dawned, demonstrators began gathering in cities across the country to call for an end to unequal pay and precarious working conditions, and to draw attention to the role of women in "devalued" domestic labor. Most of the country's unions called for a 24-hour strike, while two of the biggest have asked their members to stop work for just two hours. While Spain is seeing some of the largest walkouts, women in many other countries around the world are also on strike Thursday in response to the call for a global work stoppage.A national strike in Italy is disrupting rail and air transport, while cities across the UK are also seeing rallies by striking women.  1380

Thousands of youth sporting events were canceled this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It's tough enough that kids are missing a whole season of baseball or soccer. But now, soccer moms and dads everywhere are growing frustrated. Many paid hundreds of dollars for their kids to participate in spring soccer leagues that ended up canceled, and refunds are turning out to be elusive. Some families paid over ,000 for two children to join private clubs. One weekend of play, 0 goneJulie Hooper is the mother of a third-grader who only got to play one weekend before the season was shut down."For the spring soccer league, we paid 5," she said. When parents called the head coaches after the cancellation, they did not get what they had hoped."We asked where our money is, and they are keeping all of it and told us we get a 10% discount if we sign up for next season," she said.Hooper said she would understand had they at least continued training, but there have been no tournaments, games or practices, and the club still has the parents' money."I've heard from other teams, other clubs, that they would get money back from tournaments not played," she said.Where is the money? But many clubs are not giving refunds. News reports and Facebook complaints show soccer parents nationwide are asking where the money has gone. Some teams say they prepaid for tournaments and are having problems getting those deposits back from larger sporting organizations. Others say much of the money went to field maintenance and insurance, and those funds are gone for good.Hooper said she doesn't expect a full refund, but "to pay 5 and get so little, it just seems like we should get something back. We feel we are deserving of that because we are all going through hard times."Some soccer clubs are applying for federal pandemic assistance and using that money to refund parents because they say they simply don't have the cash in the bank to give families their money back.As always, don't waste your money.________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc.
