HONG KONG — China has officially ratified a plan to write a national security law for Hong Kong, exerting Beijing's broader, new control over the semi-autonomous territory in a bid to prevent a return of the months of often-violent protests last year. That's right, you can now get a degree in brewing.With craft beer now a multi-billion dollar industry, we're learning more students are now studying the science of suds. Among those students is Chris Thibodeau, who recently graduated from Metropolitan State University in Denver, with a degree in brewery operations.“For the love of beer," says Thibodeau of the reason he decided on this major. Thibodeau says he's drawn to the process of making beer, as well as the beer community.A retired United States Air Force veteran, Thibodeau has turned his love of beer into a second career. He says that the brewery program is just as difficult as military life.“It's not just drinking beer and having a party,” he said. “It’s hard work but it's rewarding in the end.”As the craft beer industry continues to grow, there's now a growing number of colleges across the country offering what you could call "brewology" degrees.“Honestly, you get an incredible grounding in every aspect of what it takes to operate a brewery, what it means to make beer, what it takes to sell beer,” said Ethan Tsai, an MSU Denver beer industry program instructor. Tsai says brewing is a science. He also makes the curriculum sound like more of a headache than a hangover.“The microbiology that you need to know or understand to brew beer, the chemistry involved in that, its fairly extensive,” Tsai said. Four years of studying mathematical equations and malting barley has paid dividends for Thibodeau, as he recently received his degree during a special veteran’s graduation ceremony at the MSU Denver campus. He also accepted a part-time position at Tivoli Brewing Company in Denver.“This brewery program has been amazing,” he said. “Just the insight to all the different aspects of brewing and preparing us for any situation we might encounter in a brewery.”More veterans seem to share Thibodeau's passion for studying brewing science. FORT THOMAS, Kentucky — Thirteen-year-old Lilliana Schalck, who died unexpectedly this past weekend, was a flyer, her father said. At just 4-feet-10-inches and 80 pounds, the cheerleader was perfectly suited to being tossed into the air by her teammates, topping their human pyramids and landing safely.“Everybody liked her,” father Dan Schalck said. “She was supportive on the mat. Doing her thing, she was fierce, but when it comes to anyone else, she was very supportive.”Doctors still don’t know exactly what happened to the eighth-grader Saturday. Her father was waiting to watch her perform in a Columbus cheer competition when she told her teammates she had begun to feel sick. Her limbs tingled; she felt weak.Dehydration, Dan thought at first. Maybe anxiety, although she had never struggled with that before. The team called an ambulance, and Lilliana was alert enough on the ride to respond to questions. Doctors ferried her from the ambulance to the emergency room to intensive care. Whatever happened, they couldn’t stop it. Less than two hours after she had begun to feel sick, she was gone.“At one point, the medical staff said, ‘If anyone’s close to her, you need to call them,’” her father said. “And I’m like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me. How can this be?’”He still doesn’t know. But Monday night, the wound still fresh, he was comforted by the Highland Heights community’s outpouring of love and support for his strong-willed, high-flying daughter.She was a middle school student, but she was talented enough to compete with high schoolers. She was a ferocious competitor, but she loved her friends. Even as the Schalck family struggled with overwhelming grief, Dan remained grateful for the kindness of the people who knew her.“There are really kind and good-hearted kids,” he said. 1815

Former Trump administration national security adviser Michael Flynn has filed court papers to withdraw his guilty plea. He says federal prosecutors acted in “bad faith" and breached their deal with him. The request comes one week after the Justice Department changed its position on Flynn's punishment by recommending he serve up to six months in prison for lying to the FBI during its investigation into ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Prosecutors had earlier said Flynn was entitled to avoid prison time because of his extensive cooperation. 568
