NEPHI, Utah – We all know teachers have incredibly tough jobs where they are asked to wear many hats. This year, amid the COVID pandemic, it will be a school year unlike any other.Schools in metropolitan areas are often the focus of media coverage, but teachers in rural parts of our country are facing the same problems. In the Juab School District in Nephi, Utah, the teachers are heading back to school. Classrooms are getting those finishing touches. Cleaning stations sit ready and desks are waiting to be filled.“It’s going to look a lot different than we’ve experienced in the past,” said Natalie Darrington, a math teacher in the Juab School District.Darrington is used to working with numbers. Smaller class sizes, plus fewer teachers, equals all sorts of fun interactions.“I know all the kids and I love seeing them in the grocery store” Darrington said. “I can’t go to the grocery store in my pajamas.”This year, the equation is not the same. Add in COVID-19, a pretty mean multiplier.“I don’t know how many students are going to show up,” Darrington said. “I don’t know how many students are going to elect to go online on any given day.”Like many districts across the country, students can choose how they learn this year.“The biggest struggle we face right now with COVID is getting support for the technology we need to be using,” said Juab School District Superintendent Kodey Huges.Even in a district with less than 3,000 students, Hughes said the hurdles are high.“The teachers can only do the great job they can do if they have the resources and the support to get out of the way so they can do it,” Hughes said.Enter small town ingenuity and hard work. This year, veteran teachers, like Mrs. Darrington, are becoming coaches to newer hires.“A lot of teachers leave the profession of teaching not because of money, but because we have to wear a lot of hats,” Darrington said. The hope is that together they can make it through this science experiment of a school year.“We’re just rolling with the punches here,” Darrington said with a laugh. The halls of Juab Junior High School will be a place where positive thinking is just as important as critical thinking.“My mantra this year is attitude,” Hughes said with a smile. As it is with any lifelong educator, there is always a lesson to be learned.“I know it’s stressful and overwhelming, but I feel like if we waste this opportunity to learn and to grow then it’s been all for not,” Darrington said. 2472

New plans for student loan debt forgiveness are being proposed as President-elect Joe Biden prepares to take office in just a few weeks. Many of those with student loans, as well as many economists, are hopeful some form of student loan debt forgiveness will pass.“I think it is one of the most accessible ways President-elect Joe Biden has to stimulate the economy,” said Suzanne Kahn, director of education, jobs, and worker power at the Roosevelt Institute in New York.In an interview covering the possible benefits of student loan debt forgiveness, Kahn explained the two ways in which the Biden can get the debt forgiven. One, he can push for Congress to include this debt relief in the next stimulus package, or two, he can take executive action. Either option could eliminate student loan debt for roughly 15 million borrowers and reduce the debt of another 30 million Americans. The president-elect is currently focused on pushing for ,000 to be forgiven in the next stimulus bill and has not said if he would actually consider executive action. However, he has also not refuted that option either. The latter option is certainly the more controversial way to get this debt forgiven, although many Democrats argue it is still legal and fully within a president’s power to do so. Many high-ranking Democrats in Congress explain Biden would have the authority to do this through the Higher Education Act.Experts like Kahn believe it is more likely that Congress will not agree on any amount of student loan debt forgiveness and Biden will take executive action.“I think that it is through executive action, or at least the first movement we see around it will be executive action,” said Kahn. “That really is because the federal government owes 95 percent of student debt, and the Secretary of Education has the ability to cancel it.”“My stance is that it is not inevitable,” said Neal McClusky, director of the Center for Educational Freedom at the Cato Institute.McClusky believes a third option is that no form of student loan debt forgiveness is passed, while he concedes there is a chance that Biden could issue an executive order forgiving student loan forgiveness. However, he also points out that option could be challenged in the courts with some questioning his authority through the Higher Education Act.“There seems to be straws that he can grab and say, ‘Look, this gives me the authority to just write off this debt.’ Other people say it is not clear in the law that he can do that,” said McClusky. “So, what would be the most likely outcome is that he would try. If he were to try and cancel student loan debt through executive action, it would end up in court and would be a pretty long court battle.”So, at the end of the day, where do we really stand with student loan debt forgiveness? The consensus is that it is more likely than ever before that some form of student loan debt will be forgiven, but we’re still nowhere close to a guarantee that will actually happen anytime soon.“I don’t think it is inevitable, but I do think it is important that it is on the table,” said Kahn. 3115

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A California judge has refused to dismiss rape and kidnapping charges against a doctor who appeared on a reality TV show and his girlfriend. Orange County Superior Court Judge Gregory Jones on Friday said he was rejecting a bid by prosecutors to drop the case. He set a hearing for June 12 to determine how to proceed. Prosecutors under a new district attorney claimed they didn’t have enough evidence to prove the charges.Attorneys for alleged victims insisted their clients were drugged and sexually assaulted by orthopedic surgeon Grant Robicheaux and girlfriend Cerissa Riley. New data shows that those who use Duolingo — a popular language app — can learn the equivalent of four semesters of university study. The app is free for all, and parents and teachers say it is a good supplement for students of all ages who are learning from home this fall.Averill, 10, is quite the Duolingo master. Her Spanish teacher recommended the app to pair with her in class lessons a few years back. Averill took that one step further. She's currently learning Korean. When she masters that, it will be her third language."My dad is Korean, and so my grandparents speak Korean," Averill said. "I'm trying to learn it because we're planning a trip to Korea to visit some relatives and I'm trying to learn it so I can speak to them a little bet,ter than I can right now."She likes to take what she's learned and practice on her grandparents. So far, she says, she's doing pretty well.Korean and Spanish are two of the 39 featured languages on Duolingo. This spring, when COVID-19 sent America into lockdown, new users flocked to the app. Dr. Cindy Blanco is a learning scientist at Duolingo."Our new users spiked 66%, which in any other time would be enormous but the spike continued the rest of the month," said Dr. Cindy Blanco, a learning scientist at Duolingo. "Our new user growth in March was 113%, which is unprecedented — kind of the word of the year."People were also downloading the app to keep their language skills sharp and because teachers needed help."The most important thing to not fall behind in a language course is to keep getting in front of that language," Blanco said.As a Doctor of Linguistics, Blanco is a Duolingo user herself. She's currently trying to keep up with her Russian. She's already well-versed in Spanish, French, Catalan, Italian and American Sign Language.Blanco says Duolingo offers all sorts of content, including lessons, short stories, podcasts, and seven a virtual language practicing event. Because Duolingo is app-based, it means users can access it from anywhere, anytime."It's more important than ever that we create products that can meet people where they are and where they are is at home with small handheld devices," Blanco said. "So, how can we get language learning literally in your hands?"It's also fun. The program moves away from textbooks and worksheets that many find monotonous, especially when it comes to language."We often associated language-learning with dry high school classes of textbooks and worksheets," Blanco said. "So, to see something that's fun, that you like doing, you're deceiving yourself. 'Well, I can't possibly also be learning, I'm enjoying it too much.'" 2655
