A Florida family is mourning the loss of their puppy Zeus, who died while protecting two of their four children from a venomous snake.Oriley Richardson, 10, was playing in his family's backyard in Webster on September 23 when the 9-month-old pit bull suddenly jumped towards him, his mother Gina Richardson told CNN on Sunday. Oriley noticed the pup attacking something on the ground, but thought it was a rope.It was a coral snake. And Zeus was doing his best to keep it away from Oriley. As the dog struggled to keep the snake at bay, Orion, 11, stepped into the backyard to change Zeus' water. That's when Zeus decided to lay down on the snake, using his body weight to smother the deadly predator and prevent it from harming the boys.Orion noticed that Zeus' eyes looked "bugged out," Richardson said. That's when they turned him over and discovered the snake, which had bitten Zeus four times before he bit off and swallowed its head. The family rushed Zeus to a nearby animal hospital, where staff immediately administered anti-venom.Sadly, it was too late. Zeus died the following day -- the same day as Oriley's birthday."I just started bawling," Richardson said. "My kids woke up and heard me crying and then they too started crying. We were all an emotional wreck."The family, including Sega, Zeus' mom, went to the hospital to say goodbye."Sega goes over to Zeus' head and puts her paws up on the table and takes a sniff," said Richardson. "Her ears came back, she got down, she instantly jumped on the sofa next to me and put her head on my thigh in sorrow. At that moment not only was my family broken, but his own mother was broken."Richardson said she feels "forever grateful" to Zeus and considers him a hero. "I feel like I may have lost one of my children had he not been there," she said.Oriley is especially saddened over Zeus' death. "He was a good boy and I loved him with all my heart," he said. "I played with him all the time. I feel sad and I miss him."Gary Richardson, the boys' father, said he hopes Zeus' selfless act will help change public perception of pit bulls."He was my best friend," said Gary Richardson. "I'm torn between wanting to be happy that this situation has brought awareness to his breed and their kind and loving nature, and the sorrow of having lost him." 2313

A man killed four people during a stabbing rampage in Southern California before officers found his car parked outside a 7-Eleven convenience store and arrested him, authorities said.In addition to the people killed, the attacker left two wounded in multiple crime scenes in Garden Grove and Santa Ana, police said. The victims killed included two people at the suspect's apartment complex, a 7-Eleven security guard and one more person at a Subway restaurant.Apartment stabbings: 2 killedThe mayhem started Wednesday when police received a burglary call shortly after 4 p.m. local time, Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney said. Two people said they'd come home and found their apartment burglarized. As officers prepared to respond to the apartment burglary, another call came in about 20 minutes later about a robbery at a bakery in Garden Grove in which an unknown amount of cash was taken. The same suspect broke into the apartment then drove his silver Mercedes to the bakery, police said. From the bakery, he returned to the apartment, got into an altercation and fatally stabbed two people, Whitney said. The suspect lived in the same apartment complex and it's unclear whether he knew the victims. At the time, officers did not know that the apartment and bakery incidents were connected.Gas station and business: 2 woundedJust after 6 p.m., officers got a robbery siren alarm at an insurance business in Garden Grove. The suspect had stabbed a woman at the business, stolen money and taken off, police said. "This female employee was very brave. This guy was armed with knives -- she fought as best as she could," Whitney said.By then, officers had talked to several witnesses and realized it was the same suspect involved in the previous incidents. They sent out an alert on his car as undercover detectives searched parking lots and nearby streets.Shortly after, police got another call of a man stabbed in the back while pumping gas and his nose nearly slashed off by the same suspect."Again, multiple scenes going on at the same time," Whitney said. "I've worked here for 30 years. This is the first time I've ever seen something like this where we have a suspect kill four people in one day and attack other people that are just innocent victims. It's pure evil."The woman and the man were hospitalized with serious injuries and are expected to survive, police said.Attacks at stores: 2 more killedWitnesses told officers the Mercedes was last seen headed toward Santa Ana and investigators sent undercover detectives in that direction. They saw the car parked at a 7-Eleven and police surrounded the convenience store. The suspect came out carrying a knife and a handgun, and police confronted him and arrested him, authorities said. Investigators discovered he'd stabbed the security guard to death and cut out his gun from his belt, Whitney said. While clearing the scene, they were told the suspect had also killed one person during a robbery at a Subway restaurant before he went to the 7-Eleven -- both in Santa Ana, police said. Law enforcement agencies from both agencies worked on the crime scenes. There are no known connections between the suspect and the victims, and the motive appears to be robbery, Whitney said."These crimes have nothing to do with hate or race," he added "The suspect is Hispanic and so are most of the victims."Authorities have not identified the suspect.Santa Ana and Garden Grove are both in Orange County about 35 miles from Los Angeles. 3496

Shooters in three different mass killings this year have posted manifestos on a little-known website where extremists gather to cheer on and recruit others. The 8Chan website has been down and then back online repeatedly since the mass killings in El Paso Saturday. A growing number of people studying mass shootings say homegrown extremists are organizing and recruiting like the way well-known terror groups such as ISIS or Al Qaeda have done, and they are using the 8Chan website to do it. Robert Evans doesn’t give off the look of someone who has studied extremists academically. The day he met us, he was dressed like a world traveler, wearing a TV, vest, jeans and boots. “I study how terrorist groups use the Internet to radicalize and recruit," Evans told investigative reporter Jace Larson during an interview Monday in Mexico City. Ten days ago, Evans was in Syria. He traveled to study extremist groups in Mosel, Iraq in 2016 and 2017. Since a shooter went on a rampage in March, killing 51 people in Christchurch, New Zealand, Evans has devoted much of his time to studying how three mass-shootings were connected to the 8Chan website. “8Chan went from a bunch of disaffected, misogynist videogame fans to outright neo-Nazis,” Evans said. The site started after users were booted from a similar, but slightly more regulated website called 4Chan, an image-based online bulletin board where users post and discuss images. 8Chan was developed as a place where any speech is allowed. Evans showed how users freely post violence, anti-Semitic themes and race-related extreme views. Pro-white nationalism images are easily found. Robert was among the first to find a connection between 8Chan and three 2019 mass killings: the Christchurch massacre in March, the Poway synagogue shooting outside San Diego in April that injured three and killed one, and the shooting in El Paso that killed 22 Saturday. The killers appeared to have left manifestos in each case on the 8Chan website before the killings. Killing on 8Chan is sometimes likened to a video game. The phrase “beating his high score” is used to refer to anyone who can kill more than a previous killer. As evidence of this phenomenon, Evans points out that the Christchurch killer livestreamed his bloodbath with a first-person point of view from a helmet cam. “There's a reason that the Christchurch shooter livestreamed his massacre for the people at 8Chan, and there's a reason that he put together a music list that was full of songs that were like related to in jokes within that community,” Evan said. On the site, readers also talk about something called “replacement theory,” which is also referred to as “white replacement theory.” Some express a concern that the white race could be eliminated as more people immigrate from Mexico, other central American counties and elsewhere. “It's this idea that white people are going extinct because of immigration,” Evans said. He pointed out that he believes the theory is false. USERS LOOK TO TWEETS FOR VALIDATION The views of many on the site would have been considered in the past, even by users, as extreme and not shared by the public. Evans now says he’s seen evidence website users feel legitimized by recent tweets from politicians. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, posted a headline of a news article in June that read "Texas gained almost nine Hispanic residents for every additional white resident last year." 3468

The Trump administration is officially banning bump-fire stocks, senior Justice Department officials told CNN Tuesday.Under a new federal rule, those who possess the devices, commonly known as bump stocks, will get 90 days to turn them in from the date that the final rule is published in the federal register, which is likely Friday, the officials said.Bump stocks gained national attention last year after a gunman in Las Vegas rigged his weapons with the devices to fire on concertgoers, killing 58 people. President Donald Trump vowed to outlaw the devices soon after the tragedy, and some lawmakers on Capitol Hill urged him to back a permanent legislative fix.But opposition from lawmakers and the National Rifle Association ultimately made a regulatory change the only realistic path forward to accomplishing the President's goal. 855
