BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese central government on Tuesday pledged more support for Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in achieving prosperity and stability.At a meeting on the development of Xinjiang, in Beijing on March 29 and 30, Vice Premier Li Keqiang and senior leader Zhou Yongkang called for collaboration between central ministries, designated provinces and municipalities and Xinjiang's regional government to build the region into a moderately well-off society in the next decade.Xinjiang's development and stability was at a critical moment, Li said. BEIJING, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Growth in China's consumer price index (CPI) is likely to see a reverse "V" shape this year and the possibility of a serious inflation is easing, said Ha Jiming, chief economist at the China International Capital Corp. (CICC).Speaking at an investor education activity in Beijing Saturday, Ha expected China's CPI to increase 3.2 percent in May from a year earlier, and said the CPI annual growth rate would even peak at 4 percent in June and July.The country's CPI rose 2.4 percent year on year in March and the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics.The pick-up in CPI growth was a result of lower comparison base last year and the risk for a serious inflation in short term was defusing because both the global commodity prices and domestic meat and vegetable prices were falling, he said.In China, food prices accounted for one third of the CPI weight.The CICC has cut its estimate for China's economic growth this year to 9.5 percent from 10.5 percent, he said.Interest rate hikes would be unlikely this year as growth in consumer prices was expected to fall in the second half, he said.

BEIJING, March 27 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) said Saturday it would assemble more than 1,100 engineers and workers from across the country to dig over 1,600 wells in the country's southwest, where a severe drought is likely to continue.All of those professionals would be arriving at the droughty areas by April 1 and the first batch set off on Saturday, said the MLR in a statement on its website.More than 1,600 wells would be drilled, providing 200,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day for 2 million people and 1 million head of livestock, said the ministry, hoping to finish digging 1,400 of the wells by May 10.So far, the MLR has already dug over 100 wells, which can produce drinking water for more than 100,000 people.The drought, which has left southwest China suffering since last Autumn, would likely continue till May as no substantial rainfall was expected ahead of the rainy season, according to meteorological agencies.It has left 18 million residents and 11.7 million heads of livestock in the region with drinking water shortages and caused direct economic losses of 23.7 billion yuan (3.5 billion U.S. dollars), data from the Ministry of Civil Affairs showed.

XIANGNING, Shanxi, April 5 (Xinhua) –- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao conveyed sympathy to the nine coal miners who were safely taken out of the Wangjialing Coal Mine in north China's Shanxi Province Monday morning.Luo Lin, head of the State Administration of Work Safety, read a telegraph of Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang on the site. In the letter, Zhang expressed sympathy to the survivors on behalf of Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao and ordered rescue workers to race against time and go all out to continue the rescue work.The nine survivors lifted out of the shaft were immediately sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.Underground water gushed into the pit of under-construction Wangjialing Coal Mine at about 1:40 p.m. last Sunday. Altogether 261 miners were working underground, and 108 were lifted to safety.
