NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A veteran wounded in the line of duty, who was told he would never run again, is gearing up to run a marathon in Nashville.Randy Woodward, of Smyrna, Tennessee is in the process of running 10 marathons in five weeks.He will complete each 26.2-mile run while carrying an 8-foot-by-5-foot American flag.“It’s been really great,” said Woodward.  “It will be something to look back on and say you did it. You finished it.”Woodward has already completed marathons in Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; Lexington, Virginia; Arlington, Virginia; Savannah, Georgia and Bowling Green, Ohio. He has plans to run in future events in Louisville, Kentucky; Fort Benning, Georgia and another in Nashville.Woodward was on his second tour in Iraq when he was hit by a roadside bomb. He spent nine months in hospitals recovering.  At the time, doctors told him he would never run again.“Fortunately, I have all my limbs,” said Woodward.  “I’m blessed and thankful for that.”Woodward was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery.Having run a marathon before his injury, Woodward was determined to run again. After recovering, he set his sights on the bold decision to run back-to-back marathons over the course of consecutive weeks.At each stop, Woodward’s efforts and his American flag have been getting a lot of attention.“I got just an outpouring of support from people,” said Woodward.  “It’s been really great.”Woodward said the reason he is running is to spread patriotism, and he hopes his efforts inspire others.“There is just so much divide in this country, and there is so much hate,” Woodward said.   1709

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, has remained a major vacation destination amid a national pandemic this summer.In recent days, several officials have warned that travelers returning from the popular East Coast beach destination should quarantine themselves and get tested.Despite the warnings, Myrtle Beach officials say they’re open for business, but are asking visitors to vacation responsibly."We understand that people are ready to travel again following these difficult past few months, and excited that people are choosing the Grand Strand as the destination they want to visit," said Karen Riordan, president and CEO of Visit Myrtle Beach. Currently, 84% of acute hospital beds in Horry County, South Carolina, are occupied. More transgender and gender-nonconforming people have been killed this year than any other year prior since data has been tracked.According to the Human Rights Campaign, which has been tracking the deaths since 2013, at least 33 trans or gender non-conforming people have been killed in the United States in 2020.“There’s a loud minority of folks who feel it is their place to punish people who have different beliefs than they do,” said Tori Cooper, a transgender woman herself who works with the HRC. “It is difficult to sometimes articulate how each death feels, like a little part of your spirit is being taken away.”Cooper says as LGBTQ issues get more exposure, more risk is taken on by the community. She also says each year the reporting gets more accurate, which could be why the trend has gone the way it has.“There [are] so many things that you find in common; so many commonalities with these people who have been murdered that it feels each time a little closer to home,” said Cooper.For Cooper, that feeling was never more pronounced than after 33-year old Felycya Harris, another trans woman, was killed on October 8 by a man she was in a romantic relationship with. Both live in Georgia, and both can identify with the fact that most of these deaths have come at the hands of those closest to the victim.“When someone says something under their breath you have to think to yourself is this person going to kill me,” said Cooper. “That may sound, to folks outside the community, hyperbolic, but the truth is it isn’t.”Cooper says the way forward is in education, empathy, and working through any discomfort about transgender issues that may be different than our own.“If folks who in our same social circles are killing us, then if we can’t trust people who we know then who is it that we can trust,” said Cooper.She says only then can we work towards reversing a trend that has Cooper and others apprehensive about something inherent to all of us: connection.“Provide folks with the love, support, and encouragement that we, as trans people, need because that provides a modicum of safety,” she said. 2124

Multiple cell phones, scopes, two rifles and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition were found by police during a search of Travis Reinking's Antioch apartment. In an affidavit from Metro Nashville Police, detectives searched Reinking's Discovery at Mountain View apartment and took a number of items. The two rifles were a CZ 452-2EZKM .22 caliber and a Remington 30-06.Police found hundreds of .22 caliber rifle bullets, 87 30-06 bullets, 30 .223 bullets, 29 .45 bullets and 43 .22 caliber bullets.They also found four cell phones, two scopes, a notebook, a safe and several computers. The affidavit describes Reinking's apartment as a one-bedroom apartment. Police said he has been living there for three months. Inside of Reinking's truck that was left at the Waffle House, police found two checks made out to "Travis J. Rankins [sic]." Also, police found an iPod and a Buck Knife with a black sheath.Assorted documents and papers were found in both the apartment and the truck, though what information they contain was not specified.
