NEW YORK (AP) — In a typical year, the newly inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class would have hit the stage and perform the well-known songs that made them famous and helped them enter the prestigious organization. Not in 2020.Because of the coronavirus pandemic, this year's all-star group was inducted Saturday night in a taped HBO special that told the stories of Whitney Houston, Notorious B.I.G. and the Doobie Brothers' rise to fame and how acts like Nine Inch Nails, T. Rex, and Depeche Mode heavily impacted the music industry and generations after them.According to the Los Angeles Times, Houston's mother/manager Cissy Houston accepted her induction on her behalf.Whitney was 48 when she passed away in 2012 after she accidentally drowned due to heart problems and cocaine use, ABC reported.According to Vulture, Houston, Biggie, and T. Rex founder Marc Bolan were three 2020 inductees honored after their deaths.Notorious B.I.G., who was shot and killed in 1997, was inducted by Sean "Diddy" Combs, Vulture reported.Bolan, who died in 1977, was inducted by the former drummer for the Beatles Ringo Starr, Rolling Stone reported. The induction ceremony was initially supposed to occur in May in Cleveland, the city where the Rock Hall is located. 1267

NEWARK, N.J. - Before the holiday travel season picks up, United Airlines said they will be offering free coronavirus tests to passengers on select flights between New Jersey and the United Kingdom, beginning Nov. 16.According to a press release, the airline launched the 4-week pilot program that will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 11.United is only rapidly testing passengers flying between Newark Liberty International Airport to London Heathrow, free of charge.United said appointments are required, and passengers will have to arrive three hours before their flight to get results back in time."We believe the ability to provide fast, same-day COVID-19 testing will play a vital role in safely reopening travel around the world and navigating quarantines and travel restrictions, particularly to key international destinations like London," said Toby Enqvist, chief customer officer for United in the news release. "Through this pilot program, we'll guarantee that everyone* onboard has tested negative for COVID-19, adding another element to our layered approach to safety. United will continue to lead on testing, while at the same time exploring new solutions that contribute to the safest travel experience possible."United said Premise Health is administering the rapid testing pilot program.Travelers flying into the UK still face a mandatory 14-day quarantine, according to the US Embassy in the United Kingdom. 1426

NEW YORK CITY — Mayor Bill de Blaiso suggested that the snow day as we know it may be gone due to remote learning, as the city prepares for what could be it's biggest snow storm in years. The mayor announced that all schools, including in-person learning, would be open Wednesday. The mayor cited expectations that the storm will not begin to hit New York City until 4 p.m. School buses will also be in use. "School will be in session Wednesday," de Blasio said. "We do not expect the snow to even begin until school is complete tomorrow." On Thursday, there will be classes one way or the other. While the decision has not yet been made on in-person learning, all students will have the option of remote learning for Thursday regardless of how much snow the area gets.De Blasio suggested parents have an alternative ready for Thursday. "We're going to be assessing the storm as it arrives, we will be making a decision as we get more information." De Blasio suggested they may have the information they need to make a decision by 6 p.m. Wednesday. The city is under a winter storm watch for late Wednesday into Thursday. NEWFOUNDLAND, Pa. -- Crown-wearing worshippers held onto their AR-15 rifles, drank holy wine and exchanged or renewed wedding vows during a commitment ceremony at a Pennsylvania church Wednesday.State police and protesters stood outside the church as brides dressed in white and grooms dressed in dark suits clung to their AR-15s inside the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary. The church believes the AR-15 represents the “rod of iron” in the book of Revelation and encouraged couples to bring guns to the ceremony. An attendant was charged with the task of checking each weapon at the door to ensure it was unloaded and secured with a zip tie.The ceremony prompted an area school district to move elementary school students down the street to a different school. 772

Here are the latest snowfall and ice accumulation forecasts for the storm. pic.twitter.com/D6oTJ9bzAq— NWS Eastern Region (@NWSEastern) December 16, 2020 The pandemic is adding new complexities to officials’ preparations, from deciding whether to close testing sites to figuring out how to handle plowing as outdoor dining platforms crowd New York City streets.Still, officials say they don't expect the winter blast to disrupt vaccine distribution.New York City is also preparing its mass transit and school systems for the oncoming snowstorm. The city’s public schools will remote learn Thursday instead of learning in-person. Transit agencies in the area are shifting schedules to accommodate those who must travel. As of Wednesday at 10:30 p.m. ET, the heaviest snow fell in Central Pennsylvania, with Dushore, Pennsylvania, reporting 18.5 inches of snow. The area was still being blanketed by snow. Locales around Philadelphia and New York City reported 4 to 6 inches of snow, while areas around Pittsburgh had over 6 inches.
