SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Following hours of public comment and discussion, the Santee City Council approved a massive housing development that has been in the works for decades.Late Wednesday evening, the council voted 4-1 in favor of the Fanita Ranch project. The development was first proposed in 1999 and has gone through several revisions.The project includes nearly 3,000 new homes, as well as plans for a school, parks, and open space. Changes to state Route 52 are also a part of the plan.The development will be located north of SR-52, west of Eucalyptus Hills, off Magnolia Avenue and Cuyamaca Street.Fanita Ranch supporters have argued that more homes are needed in the area, but opponents believe the project would create a traffic problem, especially during an emergency situation like a wildfire. Noise and environment-related concerns have also been raised.The developers, HomeFed Corporation, said they have solutions for many of the issues brought up by project opponents, including evacuation routes in the event of an emergency.HomeFed also said the project would bring more jobs and revenue to the city of Santee.The project would be completed in four phases and would be finished in 10-15 years.Prior to the vote, some Santee residents asked the council to table the issue and allow them to have a vote on the land use with Measure N on the November ballot. 1385

(KGTV) - Customs and Border Protection officials tweeted thermal camera video Friday of men climbing the U.S.-Mexico border fence and damaging the concertina wire.The video was recorded by U.S. Border Patrol cameras placed near Border Field State Park in Imperial Beach, opposite from where migrants have been gathering as more members of the Central American caravan arrive in Tijuana.There was no word on whether the incident captured on video led to an arrest.“All seeking to enter the U.S. are urged to do so at one of more than 320 official U.S. Ports of Entry,” Customs and Border Protection officials wrote in the tweet.  665

SARASOTA COUNTY, Florida — Sheriff Tom Knight announced the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is seeking candidates to protect 12 of its elementary schools in the county.The sheriff is looking to hire 14 candidates to fill the newly designed School Resource Deputy II position.“It has been our goal from day one to identify a practical and cost-effective solution for the school district,” said Sheriff Knight. “After ample research and internal review, we put together a program that is not only compliant with the new law, but will stand to benefit the district and its students, while appealing to law enforcement-certified career seekers looking to give back to this community. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man has been taken into custody following a carjacking Friday afternoon in Santee, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The incident started on the 9800 block of Mission Gorge Road around 1 p.m. when the suspect reportedly threatened to kill a 77-year-old woman and her family before hitting her, removing her from the car, and driving away with her purse and cell phone.Sheriff's deputies and La Mesa Police later found the suspect, Chris DiSalvo, 30, sitting in the stolen car on the 4600 block of Palm Drive in La Mesa. When he saw law enforcement, the department says he took off, crashing into a tree and running into a nearby apartment complex.DiSalvo was later found hiding in a stairwell and was arrested, the department says.According to authorities, DiSalvo admitted to taking drugs. He was given a dose of Naloxone and taken to the hospital.Upon his release from the medical facility, the department says he will be booked on several felony charges, including carjacking. 1035
