GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A boy in Kent County, Michigan, brought his entire class with him Thursday morning as he received a gift just in time for the holidays: a forever home.Five-year-old Michael Orlando Clark Jr. wanted all his friends to see the moment he was officially adopted, so he brought them to 17th Circuit Court to cheer him on.His parents, Andrea Melvin and David Eaton, knew Michael was the right fit for their family after fostering."He brings us a lot of joy,” Melvin said. “He's just so full of energy and so full of love, it's just been great for everybody.”There was no shortage of love around them in the courtroom."It is a great tribute to Michael that he had so many of his classmates here and so many said he was their best friend too,” Michigan Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman said.Judge Patricia Gardner said she had never experience something like that before.“Never have I experienced that before, and it was loads of fun, the kids were into it and supporting their best friend, and the family of Michael,” she said.After Thursday’s ceremony, Eaton said he hopes other families get to share the inspiring experience his has gone through.Thirty-six other kids were also adopted Thursday as part of the 23rd annual adoption day in Kent County. 1284
Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the murder of Botham Jean.Guyger shot and killed Jean as he sat in his apartment on Sept. 6, 2018. Guyger lived in the same apartment complex at the time and said she mistakenly entered Jean's apartment, thinking it was hers.During the trial, Guyger testified that she entered the apartment with her gun drawn with the intent to "eliminate' what she thought was an intruder. Guyger's lawyers argued, "stand your ground" laws applied in the case.Guyger also apologized during the trial, saying she has asked God for forgiveness and regretted the incident."I wish he was the one with the gun and killed me," she said. "I never wanted to take an innocent person's life, and I am so sorry."Guyger was convicted on murder charges on Tuesday after less than 24 hours of jury deliberations. 882

GREELEY, Colo. – The man who crashed into and killed a Colorado State Trooper during the bomb cyclone storm in March was sentenced to 90 days in jail on Wednesday.John Carpenter, 58, of Centennial, had pleaded guilty in October to a charge of failure to exercise due care when approaching a stationary vehicle resulting in death. An initial second charge of careless driving causing death was dismissed.On March 13, CSP Cpl. Daniel Groves was helping a stranded motorist on Interstate 76, just west of Roggen, during the massive blizzard. The driver of a 2001 Volvo, who was later identified as Carpenter, lost control and struck Groves outside his patrol vehicle. Groves was transported to Platte Valley Medical Center, where he died. Carpenter had moderate injuries from the crash.Carpenter was also sentenced to eight and a half years of probation and ordered to work 850 hours of community service. 914
