SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A San Diego man walked up to a horrifying sight:  his wife bloodied and unconscious in Balboa Park.Donna Gookin and her husband Ed were part of a group participating in orienteering last Wednesday in the early evening.  Orienteering is hiking sport that combines a compass, a map and locating markers.  The two were on separate parts of the trail. Not far from the Cabrillo Bridge, Ed found a cluster of emergency personnel around his wife, unconscious and about two feet from a pool of blood."Scared and fearing the worst. I may have lost my wife," said Ed Gookin.RELATED: Elderly veteran attacked in North Park while riding mobility scooterHis wife survived but suffered several fractures in her eye socket and bleeding in her brain.  She remembers regaining consciousness in the hospital the next day."A headache and wondering what happened," said Donna Gookin.Her last memory was choosing to go on a less steep path.  But her husband doesn't believe she fell. RELATED: Police investigating after body found in Balboa Park"I think somebody hit her.  Somebody clubbed her," said Ed.He says his wife, who has thin skin, had no injuries on her body.    "She would have been very bloodied and torn up, because of her skin, if she had ... fallen," said Ed.RELATED: 29-year-old stabbed on bench in Balboa ParkEd also points out her clothes were not sandy and there were no rocks near her that could have caused her injury.  If she was attacked, the couple hopes a witness will come forward."I want other people to be safe and think they would be safe walking on the trails in Balboa Park," said Donna.10News recently profiled an 81-year-old man who says he was struck near his eye by a man with a rock-filled sock in North Park the night after the Balboa Park incident.Police have yet to say if they're looking into a link.  If you have any information on the cases, call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 2013

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized Sunday after being shot in Chollas View. According to police, the shooting happened around 3:30 a.m. at an apartment complex near the 47th Street Trolley Station. 10News spoke to the victim's mother. She said her eldest son, Ricardo Dominguez was shot in the right hip. The bullet went through the main artery but missed his organs. She said Ricardo is now sedated at the ICU -- in serious but stable condition.Witnesses told police two cars were seen speeding from the area, but no word on whether or not the vehicles were involved in the shooting.Ricardo Dominguez's mother has set up a fundraiser page. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Chargers dramatic win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday clinched the team its first appearance in the NFL Playoffs since 2013.Only this time, the Bolts are representing Los Angeles, not San Diego. “The players deserve it,” said San Diegan John Velarde. “The Spanoses? No.”Team owner Dean Spanos moved the team to Los Angeles after the 2016 season, after voters rejected the team’s bid for a downtown San Diego stadium. The move prompted some fans to disavow the Chargers forever, and it was easy the first year — the Bolts lost their first four games before battling back to finish 9-7. The Chargers are 11-3, and are tied with Kansas City for the best record in the AFC. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Bald Eagle admitted to the San Diego Humane Society on Fourth of July died Tuesday, the organization said.According to the Humane Society, the eagle passed away after being sedated and anesthetized for an examination. Veterinarians took the step after discovering that the bird was having trouble breathing Tuesday morning.“Several efforts were made to resuscitate the bald eagle, but we were unsuccessful.Our staff and partners have done everything in their power to help this bald eagle, and are extremely saddened by today’s outcome,” the organization said.RELATED: Bald eagle admitted to Humane Society on 4th of JulyThe eagle was brought to the society’s Project Wildlife Center by SoCal Parrots after it was seen on the ground for several days at Barrett Honor Camp in Alpine. 812

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - "It's not fair and it's not right," says Warren Peters of Spring Valley. He says he's been watching his son, Jahmes, spend several months fighting for his federal tax return. "People need this money. People have worked for this money. People have earned this money," says 24 year-old Jahmes.The young man tells Team 10 that he filed online in February and received his state refund, but not his federal refund. It's now been more than 7 months. A return summary shows he's owed almost ,200 from the IRS.Jahmes says he's between jobs and burning through his savings. His father tries to help but says he's retired and on a fixed income, so his means are limited."It doesn't feel too good depending on your dad at 24-years-old," Jahmes tells Team 10. Jahmes says he has repeatedly called, emailed and written to the IRS. He adds he was once asked to appear in-person to verify identity, which he says he completed. However, he says his efforts didn't yield clear answers from the IRS.On the IRS website, he showed us what he says is his filing status. "Your tax return is still being processed," is what it reads. "If the circumstances were different, [the IRS] would be knocking on [our] door looking for their money," says Warren Peters. "The IRS is just understaffed and overworked," says tax attorney Ronson Shamoun, CEO of Downtown San Diego's RJS Law Firm. He says long delays are not uncommon.
