The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo declared an outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, a rare and deadly disease, on Tuesday, the World Health Organization reported. The declaration came after laboratory results confirmed two cases of the disease in the province of Bikoro."Our top priority is to get to Bikoro to work alongside the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and partners to reduce the loss of life and suffering related to this new Ebola virus disease outbreak," said Dr Peter Salama, WHO Deputy Director-General, Emergency Preparedness and Response. "Working with partners and responding early and in a coordinated way will be vital to containing this deadly disease."This is Congo's ninth outbreak of Ebola virus disease since the discovery of the virus in the country in 1976. In the past five weeks, there have been 21 suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever, including 17 deaths.Ebola virus disease, which most commonly affects people and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees), is caused by one of five Ebola viruses. The WHO said it is working closely with the government to rapidly scale up its operations and mobilize health partners, including Medicin sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders), using the model of a successful response to a similar Ebola outbreak in 2017.  1352

But we’re not playing around. Our customers are demanding action from us. Drop your support of the NRA or we will be looking at other options. The mayor of a California town says police are investigating after video widely shared on social media shows a woman making racist remarks about a Filipino American woman who was exercising in a local park.Patrick Furey, the mayor of Torrence, California, says the city is aware of the viral video."All visitors to our open spaces should always feel safe and free to exercise while practicing social distancing without conflict," he said, according to The Los Angeles Times. "Conduct like that displayed on the video cannot be tolerated."KABC-TV in Los Angeles adds that Furey said an investigation has been opened by police. The video was originally posted by Rachel Tennell on Twitter (@rmtennell). Tennell says the video shows her friend, who she later identified as "Sherry," being accosted by a white woman as she exercised in Torrence's Wilson Park."The next time you talk to me like that, you're going to get your a** kicked by my family. They're going to f*** you up," the woman yells as Sherry stretches."Go back to whatever f***ing Asian country you belong in," the woman later said.Tennell said that Sherry no longer feels safe working out in the park because of the incident.Later on, in her Twitter thread, Tennell shared a statement by Sherry."I never imagined my story would reach so many people, and I am happy to shed some light on the work that needs to be done in this country. As a Filipino American, I believe all people of color should be treated with humanity, dignity and respect," she wrote. "I stand in solidarity with all oppressed people who face discrimination and violence just because of their ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender-nonconformity and sexual orientation."Watch the viral video below.Warning: The video includes explicit and racist language. 1794

The number of people unable to make house payments on time has reached a nine-year high, according to a recent analysis of the data.Mortgage delinquencies were at 8.22 percent of all loans for the second quarter of 2020, says the Mortgage Bankers Association. At the end of June, an estimated 4.2 million Americans were on a forbearance plan, meaning they have an agreement with their mortgage lender to delay foreclosure."The COVID-19 pandemic's effects on some homeowners' ability to make their mortgage payments could not be more apparent. The nearly 4 percentage point jump in the delinquency rate was the biggest quarterly rise in the history of MBA's survey," said Marina Walsh, MBA's Vice President of Industry Analysis in a press release. "The second quarter results also mark the highest overall delinquency rate in nine years, and a survey-high delinquency rate for FHA loans."FHA, or Federal Housing Administration, loans are designed for low-to-moderate income borrowers and require a smaller down payment when purchasing a home. The survey found 15.65 percent of FHA loans were delinquent in the second quarter of 2020. That’s the highest rate since the Mortgage Bankers Association began keeping records in 1979.The survey asks loan servicers to report any loan that is not paid back according to the terms in the agreement. The high rate of mortgage delinquencies appear to be connected with availability of jobs. The five states with the largest increases in delinquency rate were New Jersey, Nevada, New York, Florida and Hawaii; all states with a high number of leisure and hospitality jobs that are now in flux because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 1669

The Kansas City Chiefs announced Thursday that an ongoing, multi-year conversation with groups of people from "diverse American Indian backgrounds and experiences" has resulted in several changes that will be implemented this season at Arrowhead Stadium.Under the Chiefs' new policy, fans will be prohibited from wearing headdresses, which the team previously only discouraged, and also will be barred from wearing face paintings that reference or “appropriate” American Indian cultures. Some fans said the changes couldn't have come soon enough."It’s been a long time coming to make some change there," Danny Sandage said. "I think change needs to occur."Most fans aren't surprised by the Chiefs' decision."I think we have to be more mindful about images that can be offensive to people," Summer Friedman said.Nor do they think it will detract from the Arrowhead experience."I know people are very rah-rah about the whole costume, the get-up and everything like that," Jean-Luc Monroe. "But to be honest with you, I'm just there to enjoy football. I could really care less about head dresses in face paint."Leaders and students Haskell Indian Nations University have previously asked the Chiefs to prohibit behavior that they believe mocks their culture."(In) 2020, there should be no excuse that this racist mockery is still taking place," Jimmy Lee Beason II, who teaches in Haskell's Department of Indigenous and American Indian Studies, said.He believes the changes the Chiefs announced are a step in the right direction toward ending the degradation of Native Americans."It pigeonholes us in this kind of savage bloodthirsty stereotype, and the problem with that is not a lot of people know about native people," Beason said. The team continues a “thorough review process” of the "Arrowhead Chop," which is what the team calls the Tomahawk Chop that is also used at Florida State and Atlanta Braves games among other venues. The team says it hopes to have additional discussions on the "Arrowhead Chop" in the future. Beason hopes it will banned as well."It encourages this behavior on the part of the fan base to continually just disrespect us and not actually look at us like actual human beings," Beason said. "We’re always viewed as these one-dimensional caricatures who are now stuck somewhere in the past."More immediately, the team says it is working to “shift the focus” of the drum to represent the heartbeat of the stadium.“We are exploring all options for a modified engagement moment from the Drum Deck that maintains a unifying effect between our fans and our players but better represents the spiritual significance of the drum in American Indian cultures,” the team said in the statement. The team plans to continue — in collaboration with the Kansas City, Missouri, Health Department — other traditions, including the Blessing of the Four Directions, the Blessing of the Drum and inviting tribes with historic connections in the area to participate in the team’s American Indian Heritage Month Game.“We are grateful for the meaningful conversations we have had with all of these American Indian leaders,” the team said. “It is important that we continue the dialogue on these significant topics, and we look forward to continuing to work together in the future.”This story was first reported by Andres Gutierrez and Sam Hartle at KSHB in Kansas City, Missouri. 3386
