BOZEMAN, Mont. — Cloie Musumecci sent MTN News a brief video of a woman tripping and falling as a bison charged at her and another person in Yellowstone National Park.Cloie said in an email that the incident happened at Nez Perce Creek. She said the woman "is a Montana local so she knew to play dead in that situation."The woman was was not injured and escaped "without a scratch," Cloie said. Both the COVID-19 pandemic and conversations about race happening now are shining a light on mental health.One in five adults experience mental illness each year. Only one in three Black adults who need mental health care are getting it.The reasons range from socioeconomic disparities, like access to health insurance, to the stigma in the Black community around getting this care.Another issue, the latest numbers from the American Psychological Association show 4% of psychologists in the U.S. are Black.“You know, I think a lot of these guys, they've been going to the same barber since they were 5 years old or maybe only went to a couple of barbers in their whole life and so it's their relationship,” said Lorenzo Lewis, founder of The Confess Project, which trains barbers to become mental health advocates.That training includes learning active listening, positive communication, validation and stigma reduction.Lewis says the barbershop is a good place for this because it's really the only place in the Black community, besides the church, where everyone from all socioeconomic backgrounds come. And they visit more frequently than they would their own doctor.He says he recognized the need for mental health help among black men, but saw it wasn't accessible to them.He is hearing conversations in barbershops change especially now with the issues the Black community is facing.“I think, if nothing else, it is more of a preparation conversation around life success and what in which we know when individuals are successful in life, career, health and their relationships, that they will have a quality mental health,” said Lewis.The mental health training for barbers is being offered in some cities in person, or you can take the virtual course. BALTIMORE, Md. - The pitches Brandon Woody has bent on the trumpet have brought him to places many kids who were born in West Baltimore and grew up over East Baltimore only dream of.“The trumpet has allowed me to fly,” Woody said. “It’s allowed me to leave my city. It’s allowed me to go college in New York and California for free.”He started out playing drums at Leith Walk Elementary in East Baltimore.He quickly realized he wanted to make a change from percussion to brass.“I couldn’t take the instrument home for a whole two weeks, because we couldn’t take an instrument home until we got a sound out of it. Until we were able to play it.”After two weeks he could make a sound and has been bending pitches since.He’s been able to meet his idols like Theljon Allen, Christian Scott, and Clarence Ward.“They have made me more curious about being a black creator. About pushing the envelope, pushing the boundaries of the trumpet. Not putting it in a box. People that just inspired me to be myself my 100% raw self.”He said music saved his life and has allowed him to grow from the rich flow of musical culture in his hometown while creating his own sound.“It’s not really real if you’re not acknowledging where the notes, the culture, the sound, the tone, the intonation that you’re playing, where that was influenced by.”He’s featured in Calvin Klein’s One Future #CKOne global campaign.According to the press notes from Calvin Klein, the goal of campaign is to highlight young voices against the backdrops of their hometowns.Here’s a quote from Woody in one of the ads.“They make us out to be so angry, so violent, so hateful. While I was in recovery, I taught myself how to play.”With his friends by his side and his trumpet in his hands, he’s pushing the limit of three valves and creating a sound that’s his own.“I can play like ya know a young man that’s growing up in Baltimore and had experiences that you have when you grow up in Baltimore,” said Woody. “That’s all I can sound like.
