(KGTV) — LEGOLAND California helped make the season bright for one lucky 11-year-old who in return, helped usher in the holidays at the park.Gideon Robinson, an 11-year-old cancer survivor from Lake Elsinore, and his family helped the park light its 30-foot tall LEGO Christmas tree in the park's Fun Town. After pulling the switch, Robinson helped illuminate the tree's 11,000+ twinkling lights, which is set atop more than 400 LEGO decorations and 245,000 green DUPLO bricks.Robinson was given a star ornament and special invitation to the park's LEGO Movie World expansion set to open next year. He and his family were also treated to a stay at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel.Robinson is a two-time cancer survivor who was first diagnosed with acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia a week after his fifth birthday and again in 2019 after a short remission before receiving news that he had beaten leukemia."During these unprecedented times when so many are faced with challenges, it’s positive stories such as Gideon’s that provide inspiration to all of us," said LEGOLAND California Resort President Kurt Stocks. In a statement on the conclusions of his investigation, special prosecutor Dan Webb sharply criticized the handling of the Smollett case by Foxx and her assistant prosecutors, saying their handling was marked by disarray and misleading statements.In his conclusion, Webb wrote that the investigation “did not develop evidence that would support any criminal charges against State’s Attorney Foxx or any individual working at (her office)” but “did develop evidence that establishes substantial abuses of discretion and operational failures”In March last year, Foxx’s office surprised and angered many in Chicago by dropping charges that accused the former “Empire” actor of staging a racist, homophobic attack against himself. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill Saturday that allows transgender inmates to be housed in jails or prisons based on their gender identity.SB 132 says that during the initial intake process, the California Department of Corrections is required to note each incoming inmate's gender identity, whether they identify as "transgender, nonbinary, or intersex" and the inmate's gender pronouns. The inmate will then be sent to an appropriate facility based on their gender identity.The state cannot deny an inmate's request solely based on their anatomy or sexual orientation. However, ABC News reports that the state can deny requests if the inmate poses a "management or security concern." In that case, the state must provide the inmate with a written statement explaining their decision and give the inmate an opportunity to object.Previously, inmates were sent to facilities based on their birth gender. A 2009 study by the University of California, Irvine found that transgender inmates in the state were 13 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than an average inmate. A separate federal study done between 2011 and 2012 found that about 12% of non-heterosexual inmates reported being sexually victimized — a rate about 10 times higher than those of heterosexual inmates.According to ABC News, transgender women housed in facilities for men are among those most at risk of being assaulted."It's just a false narrative about transgender people and about transgender women in particular that they're somehow not really women and are just trying to scam their way into women's bathrooms or facilities in order to do bad things," State Sen. Scott Wiener, who authored the bill, told The Associated Press.
