ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Students at Classic Academy High School will return to school Tuesday without one of their own, who was tragically killed in a car accident over the weekend. Jonah Staebell died early Saturday morning when the truck he was riding in crashed. CHP officials say the accident happened at about 2:35 a.m. on Saturday on Summit Drive and Old Pasqual Road. Officers say seven teens were riding in a pick-up truck when the 18-year-old driver lost control and overturned. Five teens, including Staebell, were riding in the bed of the truck and all of them were ejected. Staebell died at the hospital. Staebell's principal, Dana Moen spoke to 10News Monday night. Moen remembered Jonah as a beloved student who did well in the classroom and in athletics. Moen says Staebell played football, lacrosse, and was a dancer. School officials tell 10News students officially go back to school on Tuesday and grief counselors will be on-site for as long as they're needed. According to Moen, the other teens involved in the accident were all treated at the hospital but have since been released. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Rare succulents grown along California's coastlines are under attack from poachers. Last week three South Korean nationals were charged with attempting to illegally export to Asia more than 0,000 in live Dudleya succulent plants. Federal authorities say the men pulled the plants out of the ground at remote state parks in Northern California and then brought them to a Vista nursery operated by one of the men. "What your seeing now, which is really detrimental, is that people are actually making so much money off of this stuff in some cases, that they're going out to habitat and just wholesale taking everything, just wreaking havoc," said Tony Gurnoe, Director of Horticulture at San Diego Botanic Garden.Part of the mission at San Diego Botanic Garden is to conserve rare and endangered plants and their ecosystems to preserve biodiversity."The natural world is under a lot of stress right now," says Ari Novy, President & CEO of San Diego Botanic Garden. Novy says the rare California succulents are a coveted treasure in several Asian countries. "Unfortunately in Asia there are a lot of really wonderful plant collectors, but there's a small minority that will go to any length to get plants they don't have, including imperiling plants in the wild and violating the law," said Novy. Two of the defendants have since fled the United States, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. If convicted on all counts, the defendants face up to 10 years in federal prison.The stolen succulents are now being reestablished in their habitat by California Plant Rescue. 1609

Federal prosecutors announced Wednesday that they have struck a non-prosecution agreement with National Enquirer parent company American Media Inc., effectively ruling out charges for the tabloid publisher over its role in securing hush money from President Trump's longtime personal lawyer Michael Cohen.As part of the agreement, AMI admitted to making a payment of 0,000 in cooperation with members of Trump's presidential campaign in order to prevent former Playboy model Karen McDougal's claims of an affair with Trump from being made public during the 2016 race.AMI chairman David Pecker is a longtime friend of Trump's, and the Enquirer was one of Trump's most reliable and enthusiastic media boosters during the campaign.Pecker met with Cohen "and at least one other member of the campaign" in August of 2015, according to the non-prosecution agreement, which was struck with prosecutors from the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York."At the meeting, Pecker offered to help deal with negative stories about that presidential candidate's relationships with women by, among other things, assisting the campaign in identifying such stories so they could be purchased and their publication avoided," the agreement read.
