America has an opioid problem and more mothers are struggling with sobriety.“At the height of my addiction, I could take anywhere from 20 or 30 Percocets a day if I had them,” said Amanda Martin, who’s opioid addiction started shortly after the death of a child.“My third born son died shortly after he was born and that just made a huge impact on me,” Martin said.During her fourth and fifth pregnancies, Martin, a former nurse, started taking pain pills which she says impacted her other children’s health.“They both had delayed speech patterns,” she said. “My youngest son that I took the most opiates with, he did have some developmental delays.”Martin’s opioid addiction eventually led to heroin use and ultimately put her in jail.New research shows during the past two decades, four times as many pregnant women are struggling with opioid use disorder and almost eight times as many infants are diagnosed with opioid withdrawal. Now, health experts say that many are having a hard time getting proper treatment.“Hospitals are providing variable care,” said Stephen Patrick, MD, director of the Vanderbilt Center for Child Health Policy. "And we see systems in communities really stretched, everything from local community hospitals to the child welfare system."He says every 15 minutes in America, an infant is born having an opioid withdrawal, which accounts for half a billion dollars in healthcare expenditures nationwide.“This year it looks like we’re on record pace once again to have to have a record-number of opioid overdoses,” Patrick said. While the COVID-19 crisis has made it harder for pregnant women to get into treatment, Patrick says this is a fixable problem, but that America currently lacks to funding and political will to change it.“As we start to usher in a new administration, I really hope the unique needs of pregnant women and infants affected by the opioid crisis are front and center,” he said.More help is something Martin agrees with, especially during the COVID crisis.“We see a lot of people coming in that are relapsing just simply because of the pandemic,” said Martin. Now three-and-a-half years sober, Martin is working as a recovery coach for Vertava Health in Mississippi and encouraging pregnant moms battling opioid addiction to get help, no matter how hard it may be.“There’s help out there,” she said. “And there’s non-judgmental places that you can come and you can get your whole life together and never have to live that way.” 2482

After the Trump Campaign requested the presidential debates be moved closer to the election because some states will begin mail-in voting while the debates are being held, the Commission on Presidential Debates denied the campaign’s request. In a letter addressed to Trump campaign surrogate Rudolph Giuliani, the commission said it will stick with its planned three presidential debates – the first being held on September 29, and final one on October 22.“ In 2016, when the debate schedule was similar, only .0069% of the electorate had voted at the time of the first debate. While more people will likely vote by mail in 2020, the debate schedule has been and will be highly publicized,” the commission wrote. “Any voter who wishes to watch one or more debates before voting will be well aware of that opportunity.”As part of Giuliani’s request, Trump’s team sought an additional debate this fall. The Trump campaign quickly countered the debate commission’s response.“We are disappointed in your response, but appreciate your openness to a fourth, or earlier, debate ‘if the candidates were to agree that they wished to add to that schedule[,]'" wrote Giuliani. “Your reply makes it clear that the idea of an earlier debate is, in effect, locked away in the basement, alone and diminished. We continue to believe that the American people deserve to see their candidates for president compare their records and visions for the United States before actual voting begins.”The general election debates have generally followed the same schedule since 2000, with three presidential debates and a vice presidential debate the month before the election. The schedule for these debates are generally settled nearly a year in advance. 1735

According to analysis by Lending Tree, Black borrowers are more than twice as likely to be denied credit than white Americans.According to the data, 57% of loan applications by Blacks making ,000 to 0,000 were rejected or approved for amounts lower than request, compared to just 22% for whites. Blacks making 0,000 or more annually had 31% of their applications rejected or approved for lower amounts than requested, compared to just 10% for whites. The analysis also found that Black Americans with college degrees experienced more debt. The study found that Black bachelor’s degree recipients had 20% more student loan debt than whites with bachelor’s degrees."It's encouraging that Americans are having these conversations more openly and with more vigor and purpose,” Tendayi Kapfidze, chief economist at LendingTree, said. “Highlighting these racial disparities shows that systemic issues have held back generations of our fellow citizens. It is ultimately to the detriment of everyone as the economy is deprived of our best efforts by denying opportunities to many capable people. The creation of these disparities was and is often government-sanctioned and enforced, and so they should be addressed via legislative remedies in addition to societal change."Compounding the challenges for Blacks to obtain lending, the data showed that the median net worth of Black families is one-tenth of those of white families.Lending Tree said it used 2018 Bureau of Labor Statistics data, 2020 Economic Policy Institute report, various Federal Reserve data, 2020 Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis data, 2017 National Center for Education Statistics report, 2020 Pew Research Center report and U.S. Census Bureau to conduct its analysis. To read the full study, click here. 1783

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for the people responsible for breaking into the Children's Nature Retreat in Alpine and setting several animals loose. The break-in happened between Saturday night and early morning hours of Sunday morning, according to Anges Barrelet, the CEO of the Children's Nature Retreat Foundation. The non-profit houses farm livestock, as well as exotic animals.Barrelet says the intruders didn’t steal anything but cut open two enclosures. There are more than a 130 animals in the roughly 20 acres property, and they set more than a dozen animals loose. Some of them were injured by cages on the way out, getting cuts and scrapes, but the staff was able to put them all back into their enclosures.None of the animals escaped the perimeter fencing."It's completely ridiculous, and it's awful,” Barrelet said. "They put those animals in danger."The enclosures have been temporarily patched up, but Barrelet says they had to close to the public for a few days until the fences can be properly repaired. She says it’s just not safe to have visitors at the park until the barriers can be fixed. The Children's Nature Retreat hopes to reopen next week. 1213

A Ypsilanti teen says he worked hard to buy the car of his dreams, only to find out the car he had bought from a man on Craigslist was registered as stolen. Daniel O’Bryan has been balancing high school and his job at a grocery store for the past two years. He saved up enough money to buy a 2008 Trail Blazer from a man on Craigslist. O’Bryan and his family thought through their research. “My husband checked all three spots on the car to make sure the VIN number matched with the title that the gentleman had, and everything came back fine there were no red flags or anything,” O’Bryan’s mother, Kathy O’Bryan said.It was not until they had taken the car to the Michigan Secretary of State that they found out the car was listed as stolen. The rightful owner of the car is Sal’s Auto Parts out of Detroit. The owner said he lent the car to a business partner at M&G Repair, and the car was stolen outside the workers' Allen Park home. “Probably the most hurtful part was seeing my car being towed away and I didn’t even get to drive it yet,” O’Bryan said. O'Bryan says the man who sold him the car is not returning his calls. A spokesperson for the Michigan Secretary of State provided these tips for buying a car offline:  1283
