The state of Tennessee came one step closer to allowing wine sales on Sunday after state Senators voted to approve a bill which had already passed through the House. The vote passed 17-11 on Wednesday morning. Final approval will now lie in the hands of Governor Bill Haslam who needs to sign the bill in order for it to become law.   The controversial plan will allow grocery stores to sell wine on Sunday beginning January 1, 2019.It will also permit liquor stores to immediately begin operating seven days a week. However, liquor store owners argue they are at a huge competitive disadvantage against major grocery store chains, who don't need to make any staffing changes in order to be open on Sundays.  House members approved a similar plan on Monday by a vote of 53 to 35.If approved by the Governor, wine and liquor sales would be allowed from 8 a.m. to 11p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10a.m. to 11p.m. on Sunday.Tennessee first voted to allow grocery stores to sell wine back in 2016 after years of back and forth and under constant pressure from citizens and grocery store lobbyists.   1151

The Yale University police officers who were called to investigate a napping black graduate student ultimately admonished the white student who had contacted police in the first place, a Yale vice president says.The incident, captured in two Facebook Live videos, has sparked outrage about racial profiling and policing.Kimberly Goff-Crews, Yale's vice president for Student Life, said in an email to students Wednesday night that she's been "deeply troubled" by the incident.Officers interrogated Lolade Siyonbola, a black graduate student at Yale, early Tuesday after a white student found her sleeping in a common room of their dorm and called police.Siyonbola had been working on a paper in the Hall of Graduate Studies and fell asleep. Another student came in, turned on the lights and told her, "You're not supposed to be sleeping here. I'm going to call the police."Two police officers arrived and began questioning Siyonbola in a stairwell. When she asked them about the complaint, one officer said, "She called us (and) said there's somebody who appeared they weren't ... where they were supposed to be."The officers asked for her ID, and after some delay in verifying the spelling of her name, she was cleared to go.In the aftermath, Yale officials have defended the police response to the situation."We believe the Yale police who responded followed procedures," said Yale spokeswoman Karen Peart. "It is protocol in such circumstances for the police to ask for student (or staff) identification cards. The unemployment rate has dipped below 4 percent for the first time since 2000.The United States added 164,000 jobs in April, the Labor Department reported Friday. That was slightly below what economists expected. Unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent, the lowest since December 2000."The employment situation continues to surprise everyone," said Robert Frick, chief economist with Navy Federal Credit Union. "Getting down to 3.9 is quite a marker."Wages grew 2.6 percent from a year earlier. That was also slightly below expectations.The report indicates another month of solid job growth for an economy that has been expanding for almost nine years — the second-longest streak on record.Hiring gains in April were broad. Professional and business services added 54,000 jobs, health care added 24,000, and manufacturing posted an increase of 24,000 jobs.The mining sector added 8,000 jobs, extending its gains. Employment in mining has risen by 86,000 since October 2016.The wage growth number seemed unlikely to alarm Wall Street, which has been worried in recent months about inflation. Stock futures were little changed after the report came out.Inflation is closing in on the Federal Reserve's 2% target, gasoline is heading toward a gallon, and companies are reporting cost pressures. Faster inflation could force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more quickly than planned.Frick believes unemployment will keep falling as businesses offer more attractive wages and benefits to fill openings."There's still hundreds of thousands of more people who will enter the workforce," he said. "I think we can get down to 3.5 percent."If unemployment falls much further, it will reach territory not seen in half a century.
