SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Council candidate Kelvin Barrios suspended his campaign today, following allegations of ethics violations.Barrios was running for City Council District 9 in the seat soon to be vacated by Council President Georgette Gomez.``Throughout this race I have been hit, morally and mentally, more times that I can even count,'' Barrios' statement released Monday said. ``And I get it -- there were issues, we needed to address them.``It seemed like every time I did, we would collectively shift away focus from the real needs of our community. The real struggle and hardships my neighbors are facing became second to the media blitz filled with negativity that just served as a distractor.''The San Diego Union-Tribune reported earlier this year that Barrios was under criminal investigation for alleged mishandling of campaign funds and was the subject of a California Fair Political Practices Commission complaint alleging he used thousands of dollars in contributions to political committees for personal use.Earlier this month, additional media reports alleged Barrios did not disclose more than ,000 he received while working for Laborers Local Union 89, and did not report a brief overlap that existed while he worked for both the union and Gomez's office.Barrios' name will still appear on the November ballot despite the campaign suspension.Barrios' campaign opponent, Sean Elo-Rivera, tweeted a statement saying Barrios suspending his campaign ``will allow our community to move away from focusing on scandals and toward focusing on the brighter future San Diegans deserve.''``Our campaign will continue engaging the community and building the momentum we'll need to make San Diego a world-class city with opportunity for all,'' the statement said. 1793

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The local U.S. Attorney's Office announced Monday that one of its prosecutors will oversee efforts to handle complaints of voting rights abuses and election fraud in the Southern District of California, which includes San Diego County.Assistant U. S. Attorney Christopher P. Tenorio has been appointed to serve as the District Election Officer for the region. Tenorio will oversee local reports of potential election fraud and voting rights violations through Election Day, in consultation with Justice Department headquarters in Washington, D.C."Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination," U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer said. "The Department of Justice is committed to protecting the integrity of the election process, stopping fraud, and making sure votes are not stolen."Tenorio will be on duty when the polls are open, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, and members of the public can reach him by calling 619-909-7556.Additionally, the FBI will have special agents and an Election Crimes Coordinator available in field offices throughout the country to hear reports of potential fraud and other crimes related to the election. The public can contact the San Diego FBI at 858-320-1800.Any cases of violence or active intimidation should be reported by calling 911, however.Brewer said, "Ensuring free and fair elections depends in large part on the cooperation of the American electorate. It is imperative that those who have specific information about discrimination or election fraud make that information available to my office, the FBI or the Civil Rights Division." 1635

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - On Tuesday park rangers recovered the body of a San Diego man who fell from a cliff at Sequoia National Park last weekend.Anton Dokov, 29, slipped on a hiking trail in the Watchtower area above Tokopah Valley and slid over a sheer precipice on Sunday, according to Sintia Kawasaki-Yee, spokeswoman for the Central California nature preserve."Rangers responded that same day, but dangerous ice and snow conditions with a very steep slope meant they had to turn around,'' Kawasaki- Yee said. "The next day, park rangers were able to find the body, but were unable to retrieve it due to the complexity and technical aspects of the 653

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials reported 603 new COVID-19 cases and nine additional deaths Saturday, raising the region's totals to 26,701 cases and 533 deaths.Officials said five men and four women died between July 11 and July 24 and their ages ranged from 60 to 93. All but one had underlying medical conditions. The county reported a record 16,429 diagnostic tests Friday, 4% of which returned positive. The 14-day rolling average of positive tests is 5.8%. The target set by California is less than 8%. The 7-day daily average of tests is 9,406.DATA: San Diego County coronavirus case trackerOf the total positive cases, 2,364 -- or 8.9% -- required hospitalization and 606 -- or 2.3% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit. One new community setting outbreak was reported Friday in a business. In the past seven days, 11 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks is above the trigger of seven or more in seven days. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households.Cal State San Marcos sent an advisory to students and staff Thursday evening notifying them that two employees who were working on campus have tested positive for COVID-19."One individual was last on campus on July 16 and the other individual on July 17," the advisory said. "Both are in self-isolation following public health protocols, as are people with whom they have had close personal contact."RELATED: Some San Diego churches plan to host indoor services this weekend despite restrictionsAs a result of numbers that continue to rise, Supervisor Greg Cox announced Wednesday that San Diego County was starting a Safe Reopening Compliance Team that will provide assistance to businesses and residents not in compliance with public health orders. The team's exact powers were not clear."This is a carrot approach, not a stick," Cox said. "But we still have the stick and other tools to ensure compliance."Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said the team would enable the county to step up enforcement on "egregious violations" -- but the details on that enforcement were also unclear. Officials were reaching out to the various cities and communities in the county to collaborate on solutions."This is out of an effort to keep our businesses open, not to close them," Fletcher said.RELATED: Living with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19From July 13 to July 19, the county also reported its most hospitalizations, 163, and the most deaths, 56, in any one-week span since COVID-19 began spreading in the United States in March."We implore you to not wait for someone you care about to lose the fight against COVID-19 before you take action," Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer, said Monday. She said the recent spike in cases began to occur after bars, hotels and gyms reopened June 12.The last metric the county has failed to maintain is the percentage of cases that have been handled by a contact investigator within 24 hours of being reported. There are more than 500 investigators employed by the county, and although 98% of all cases had been investigated in that time frame as recently as June 25, that rate had dropped to 9% as of Wednesday.Wooten said that in response, the county is attempting to hire more contact investigators, with 212 in the hiring process. 3403

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Out-of-work San Diegans can apply for seasonal employment with Macy's, which is looking to hire 6,100 holiday workers throughout California for positions at the company's department stores, call centers and distribution and fulfillment centers.Macy's, which has 97 stores in California, is encouraging job seeks to submit applications now and will be filling seasonal work positions on Thursday, Oct. 22, during a holiday virtual hiring event where interviews will be safely conducted by phone due to the coronavirus pandemic."The quick and convenient process allows seasonal candidates to interview from wherever," according to a statement released by Macy's, which says it is offering competitive pay, access to flexible scheduling, merchandise discounts and the opportunity to earn additional bonuses.Macy's officials noted that their seasonal applicants often receive an offer the same day they apply and many stay with the company long after the holidays -- about 1,000 seasonal workers last year were hired on permanently, and about one-third of Macy's store leadership started their careers during the holiday season."To support Macy's convenient shopping experience, stores will also offer a new, versatile role focused on picking and packing contact-free curbside pickup and same-day delivery orders," company officials said.Candidates can apply online 24/7. Open positions and additional information are available at macysjobs.com. 1467
