SAN FRANCISCO -- A massive fire broke out at a two-story commercial building in San Francisco Saturday night, according to KRON.The fire started inside the building and spread outward. The blaze took roughly 140 firefighters to extinguish.A total of eight people were displaced by the fire, but no one was injured.The cause of the fire is under investigation. 367

San Diego (KGTV)- As teachers come up with their virtual lesson plans for the upcoming school year, one local music teacher is turning to the community. Students at Grossmont High School need guitars for class."We'll have 80 students plus taking guitar this year," says teacher Jeremy Cooke. "It is vital for them to be able to play a guitar at home."The high school is not able to provide an instrument for each student."We're a Title I school. So over half of our students get free or reduced lunch, and many can't afford their own guitar."Cooke made a post on Facebook asking for the community to donate any used or new guitars. He says the response has been amazing. As of Monday afternoon, Cooke has received over 30 guitars. Many others are pledging to donate."I've been driving around the county picking up guitars, meeting the people who are donating, and its really neat to see, especially during these tough times."As part of his distance learning plan, Cook has compiled multiple videos recorded over the years to help students learn to play the guitar.Once the class is finished, the students will return the donated guitars to the school for others to use the following year.Grossmont High School is still in need of more guitars. Cooke says he is accepting used and new acoustic or electric guitars for the upcoming school year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Monday morning Escondido Police provided extra police patrols at a local mosque that was targeted on Sunday.Police say the Dar-ul-Arqam Mosque on 6th Avenue was set on fire by an arsonist that has yet to be identified.Worshipers inside the mosque noticed the flames around 3 a.m. on Sunday and were able to put them out before the fire could spread.Lt. Chris Lick with the Escondido Police Department said once police and arson investigators arrived, they determined that the fire was set intentionally. They also found a note left by the suspect.“Graffiti left behind by the suspect made reference to the shooting incident in New Zealand,” said Lt. Lick.The San Diego Police Department has also stepped up patrols at mosques across the city in response the incident in Escondido.San Diego's Anti-Defamation League issued a statement in support of the mosque and worshippers.“This attack appears to be meant to send a signal to the Muslim community” said ADL Regional Director Tammy Gillies. “Sadly, this type of behavior is consistent with the growth in hate crimes, rise in attacks on Muslims, and the surge in anti-Muslim bigotry that we have seen in our country and around the world.”A crowdfunding campaign was launched to help raise money to provide repairs and proper security at the mosque in Escondido.The campaign has received support from people across the country. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- As San Diego County awaits state guidance on how to move forward with reopening different sectors, a local church continues to defy public health orders by operating inside.Under the current public health order, religious services may continue outside with social distancing in place.Awaken Church was sent a cease and desist letter from the county’s public health officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, for operating inside in July.A month later, the church is defying the health order again by resuming indoor operations on Sunday, August 23, the church’s 15th anniversary. Services and locations are posted on the church's website. A video on the church’s website shows pastors Jurgen and Leanne Matthesius speaking about why they have decided to reopen. The two said it was time to reopen and that “fighting for our religious freedoms and pushing back against government overreach is not only worth the cost; it’s essential.”In the video, the pastors say that the governor and county officials continue to keep churches under strict regulations, which prevents them from meeting the needs of their congregation.“Sadly, we’ve had five people connected to our church that have lost their lives, not from the virus but because of the virus. This was due to many factors, including suicide, drug overdose, and severe neglect from a hospital who was primarily focused on their COVID patients,” said Leanna Matthesius in the video.While county supervisor Nathan Fletcher acknowledged the importance of religious freedom and constitutional rights, he spoke of his frustrations with the church at a county COVID-19 press conference Monday. “It is very frustrating to see an entity that has an avenue to gather that is allowable, that is acceptable, that is much safer, choose to openly defy that in order to expose the members of their congregation to a very dangerous situation,” said Fletcher. “Just gather outdoors, physically distance, and wear a face covering.”Under the county’s public health order, houses of worship can continue to operate if “outdoor services and cultural ceremonial activities may be conducted provided all persons practice social distancing.”A county spokesperson tells ABC 10News that the church isn’t facing additional action from the county as of right now.ABC 10News reached out to Awaken Church for further comment but did not hear back. 2380

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Chesa Boudin, the son of anti-war radicals sent to prison for murder when he was a baby, has won San Francisco's tightly contested race for district attorney after campaigning to reform the criminal justice system.The former deputy public defender declared victory Saturday night after four days of ballot counting determined he was ahead of interim District Attorney Suzy Loftus. The latest results from the San Francisco Department of Elections gave Boudin a lead of 8,465 votes.Loftus conceded and said she will work to ensure a smooth and immediate transition.Boudin, 39, became the latest candidate across the nation to win district attorney elections by pushing for sweeping reform over incarceration. He said he wants to tackle racial bias in the criminal justice system, overhaul the bail system, protect immigrants from deportation and pursue accountability in police misconduct cases."The people of San Francisco have sent a powerful and clear message: It's time for radical change to how we envision justice," Boudin said in a statement.
