SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent in April, the lowest rate yet in this century.1,577,000 people were part of the San Diego labor force last month, according to the California Employment Development Department.Only 46,200 people did not have jobs.California’s unemployment rate was at 4.2 percent in April, the lowest level since 1976.San Francisco and Marin Counties had the lowest unemployment rate of 2.1 percent.The highest unemployment rates were in Colusa County, at 15 percent, and Imperial County, at 14.4 percent. 565

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several events and school systems in San Diego have had their immediate schedules altered due to the coronavirus.Several conferences set to take place in San Diego have canceled or rescheduled, while others don't have immediately plans to alter their plans.Schools systems are also preparing for the possibility of changing schedules and continuing the school year amid coronavirus worries.LATEST CORONAVIRUS UPDATESHere's a look at what events and schools have changed their schedules due to COVID-19 worries and what we're monitoring: (We'll update this list as soon as more information is available.)Events:The 34th National Institute on White Collar Crime has canceled its planned March 11-13 conference at Marriott Marquis San Diego, citing coronavirus fears. On its website, organizers with the American Bar Association (ABA) said the decision to cancel was made "as a result of the large number of speakers and attendees who were compelled to cancel their participation due to travel restrictions put in place by employers." The institute will not be rescheduled, according to ABA. The organization said refunds are being processed to attendees, but any travel reservations made will have to be handled individually.Leaders of the Experimental Biology conference set to take place April 4-7 canceled the massive gathering over COVID-19 as well. The conference expected more than 12,000 attendees at the San Diego Convention Center.The 2020 CIE Summit business technology summit at Marriott Marquis San Diego has been rescheduled from March 18-20 to Aug. 12-14 "out of an abundance of caution," organizers say.Organizers with the Future of Individualized Medicine 2020, scheduled for March 12-13 at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, also canceled their event "based on concern for the health of our registrants, speakers, exhibitors and staff."The American Association for Cancer Research's annual meeting set for April 24-29 has been canceled. A reschedule of the meeting is being planned for later this year.San Diego Opera's several performances of "Aging Magician" at the Balboa Theatre has been canceled after several performers opted not to travel due to the coronavirus. The San Diego Opera remains open though, with performances of "The Barber of Seville" and "The Falling and the Rising" still set for April and May.The 2020 GranFondo San Diego cyclist race, scheduled for April 5, has been postponed out of an abundance of caution for riders. Race organizers are working to determine when best to reschedule the event.The remainder of the San Diego Science and Engineering Festival has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. Organizers plan to reschedule the events for Fall 2020.San Diego Loyal soccer has postponed the team's home opener on March 14 until July 29 due to coronavirus concerns and in accordance with USD's decision to limit campus events on the same weekend, the team said.Schools:University of California San Diego will begin to deliver all lecture and discussion courses remotely starting in the spring quarter. All university-sponsored athletic events are scheduled to continue but will be "fan-less." The university also asked students and staff to postponed or cancel all events or meetings expected to have more than 100 people.San Diego State University will move all classes to virtual instruction following spring break, from April 6 through the end of the spring semester, with certain exceptions. SDSU will also suspend all spring break and summer study abroad programs. The university, however, is not suspending third-party partner programs abroad, citing authority. Southwestern College in the South Bay is moving all of its in-person classes to online or distributed instruction from March 16-20. Construction began in February 1967 and two years later, then-California Gov. Ronald Reagan ushered in the iconic structure as the first person to cross over it.Instantly, it changed how San Diegans commuted, mostly replacing ferry service used to cross San Diego Bay for 83 years.The bridge's iconic curve across the bay reaches 200 feet at its highest point, allowing an aircraft carrier to pass underneath its five lanes.Just a few years after the bridge debuted, the Coronado Cays, Coronado Hospital, and Coronado Shores condo community opened and Richard Nixon hosted the first state dinner held outside of the White House at Hotel del Coronado. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Students and teachers from two classes at Sage Canyon School in Carmel Valley will have to return to online distance learning for two weeks after two people tested positive for COVID-19.In a statement to ABC 10News, Jenni Huh, the Del Mar Union School District Director of Student Services, said:“The District has confirmed two positive cases of COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School. All students and staff who were directly exposed have been contacted and will be quarantining for 14 days. The District has been in consultation with the San Diego County Department of Public Health.”Parent Amy Berkley said she was notified of the two positive cases on Sunday. She has two sons who attend the school and said her third-grader was in the same class as one of the people who tested positive.“They had two students in the school test positive, one was in first grade and the other in third grade,” Berkley said. “We got the notification on Sunday, and by Monday morning, all class materials were available for pickup, really easy and convenient.”While the positive cases are alarming for some parents, Berkley, who is also the PTA president, said she was pleased with how the situation was handled. Her son didn’t miss a school day as the classrooms impacted transitioned back to distance learning Monday.“We picked up a Chromebook, learning packet, homework worksheet, whiteboard all the material they’ll need; it was very well thought out.”According to the Del Mar Union School District’s safe reopening plan, if a student or teacher tests positive for COVID-19, the whole class will quarantine for 14 days, and learning will be offered remotely. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University students can earn extra credit in a sociology class if they take a quiz calculating their "white privilege."Professor Dae Elliott is the purveyor of the 20-question quiz that urges students to evaluate situations and determine if their skin color has benefitted them in some way.Featuring scenarios like: “I can be late to a meeting without having the lateness reflect on my race,” and, “I can choose blemish or bandages in flesh color and have them more or less match my skin,” the quiz ranks a person’s privilege by tallying up the points they get for each question.In short, the higher one’s score, the higher their privilege.“I basically made it clear there’s a variety of privileges,” said Elliott, “we all have certain privileges.”Students of all ethnicities can take the quiz and can earn the same extra credit regardless of their white privilege score, according to Elliott.SDSU College Republicans president Brandon Jones says the quiz is racially divisive and his friends in Elliott’s class feel like they are being singled out.“I think what she was trying to do is racially bring people together,” said Jones, “but instead she’s excluding a whole group of people on campus.”Elliott says the evaluation is not about color, but a way in which everyone can understand each other better.“We need to listen to each other,” said Elliott, “give each other the same respect we give our own subjectivity.”Click here to see the quiz 10News obtained from a student in the class. 1557
