JIUQUAN, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- China will launch the spacecraft Shenzhou-8 in early November at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest deseart area.The unmanned spacecraft is expected to perform China's first space docking with Tiangong-1, or Heavenly Palace-1, a space lab module that was launched in September from the same launch center.The spacecraft and its carrier rocket, an upgraded Long March-2F, were transferred on Wednesday morning on a 20-meter-wide railway to the launch pad.The launch pad is 1,500 meters away from the assembling and testing center. It took nearly two hours to complete the transfer.Technicians completed testing on the assembling of Shenzhou-8 and the rocket after they were delivered to the launch center at the end of August, said Lu Jinrong, the launch center's chief engineer.In the next few days, the launch center will continue testing the spacecraft and the rocket, and inject propellent before the final launch in early November, Lu said.The assembling, testing and transferring of the spacecraft and rocket were all conducted while they were vertical.Shenzhou-8 is capable of docking with the spacecraft Tiangong-1 in both manual and automatic modes.The Tiangong-1 space lab module is functioning smoothly in the orbit, and all equipment and experiments are going well, according to Lu. The module is ready for the docking task, Lu said.

HAIKOU, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- China will actively push forward maritime cooperation with the 10 members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in light of the guidelines on conduct in the South China Sea, a Foreign Ministry official has said.Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin made the remarks during an international seminar on implementing the Declaration on Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) and maintaining the navigational freedom and security of the waterway.Early next year, China will hold a senior officials' meeting and working group meeting with ASEAN countries on the implementation of the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC), Liu said in an interview with Xinhua on the sideliens of the seminar held in Haikou, Hainan Province, from Dec. 14-15..The senior officials' meeting is a guiding mechanism for implementing the DOC at governmental level. HANOI, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) and dengue were on the rise across Vietnam, reported the Vietnam Preventive Medicine Administration (PMA) on Tuesday.As of Oct. 23, the country had more than 76,120 HFMD patients and 135 fatalities. The number of incidents has increased significantly over the last few weeks, with an average of 2,000-2, 500 new cases reported each week.Southern Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong, Long An and Quang Ngai were the most-hit localities, said the report.Meanwhile, dengue was also reported on the rise. In the first ten months of the year, there were more than 41,200 infected cases and 32 fatalities. Currently, an average of 2-3 cases a day were hospitalized by dengue infections, mainly from capital Hanoi.Epidemiologists said that the increase of HFMD and dengue was due to the lack of specialized medicine and preventive vaccines. In addition, complicated climate change, environment pollution and low awareness of the disease among the community have contributed to the spread of the diseases nationwide.

SINGAPORE, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- A Singapore start-up firm has devised an innovative application to allow phone users to have access to their positioning information within buildings, where traditional global positioning system has often proved inaccurate, local daily Business Times reported on Monday.The firm YFind Positioning System feels that the application can help turn Singapore into the world's first location- intelligent city.Ting See Ho, co-founder of the firm, said the application works by first verifying the GPS coordinates to identify the building the user is in, and then collecting RSSI (received signal strength information) readings off WiFi access points within the building.The information is then sent by the phone to the central positioning server for comparison against records of the radio map of the building, which is calibrated earlier by the company.Ting said the RSSI readings continually fluctuates, making it difficult to estimate a position. This is where YFind Positioning System steps in with its patent-pending probabilistic algorithms to help accurately estimated the user's indoor positions.Once the phone application determines the location, then, it is able to map a course for a shop or other destination within the building where the user wants to go."You can think of it as creating an 'indoor GPS' environment in the buildings where satellite signals cannot be read," Ting said.He said that more than ten organizations in Singapore have approached the company to discuss deployment and partnerships and that it has begun work on three proof-of-concepts.The company's immediate goal is to make Singapore the world's first location-intelligent city before going to other cities, he said.

SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- About one in 10 mobile phone subscribers in the United States is now using an Apple iPhone, said a new survey released on Friday.Latest survey results from research firm comScore showed that for the three-month period ending in October, Apple remained the No. 4 handset maker in the U.S. with its share of mobile subscribers rising to 10.8 percent from 9.5 percent in the previous three months.Among the top five mobile phone brands in the U.S. market, Apple is the only one that saw its market share increase in the quarter, according to the survey.Samsung was still the top handset manufacturer with 25.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG and Motorola taking the second and third place with 20.6 percent and 13.6 percent of share respectively.Research in Motion (RIM), maker of Blackberry, ranked No. 5 with a share of 6.6 percent.Except Apple, market shares of the other four brands remained unchanged or dropped from the previous quarter.Apple's gain in the quarter might be driven by the introduction of new model iPhone 4S which went on sale on Oct. 14, and the addition of Sprint as a carrier in the U.S. market, some analysts said.The survey by comScore, which involved more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, found that 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices by the end of October.
