BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Sunday arrived in northeast China's port city of Dalian, the first stop of his three-day China visit.This is Medvedev's second state visit to the country since he assumed presidency in May 2008.On Sunday, Medvedev will visit a memorial to the Soviet Union war dead and meet with veteran Chinese and Russian soldiers who participated in China's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1937-1945).During his stay in the city, the Russian president will stop by the Dalian Institute of Foreign Languages, where he will have brief discussions with Russian language professors and students. He is also slated for a meeting with leaders of northeast China's Liaoning Province.More important meetings are scheduled for Monday when the Russian leader visits Beijing. GUANGZHOU, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese man convicted of murdering 11 people including three police officers over five years were executed Tuesday in Foshan City, south China's Guangdong Province, a local court said.Listed as one of the top wanted suspects, Cheng Ruilong, 37, was arrested in 2005 and was sentenced to death for murder, robbery and rape by Foshan Municipal Intermediate People's Court in February 2010. He was found to have murdered 11 people in a string of violence between May 1996 and January 2005.Cheng, a Guangdong native, was originally convicted of murdering 13 but the court dropped the number of victims in July's hearing of Cheng's appeal as bodies of a woman and her daughter allegedly killed by Cheng were never found.He lost the appeal. His execution had been approved by the Supreme People's Court, officials with Foshan intermediate court said.

BEIJING, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- Foreign direct investment (FDI) in China in September rose 6.14 percent year on year to 8.384 billion U.S. dollars, bringing the country's FDI inflow for the first nine months back to pre-financial crisis level.The September figure brought the total amount for the first nine months of this year to 74.34 billion U.S. dollars, rising 16.6 percent year on year, spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) Yao Jian said Friday at a press conference.The January-September FDI figure suggested China's FDI inflow had returned to pre-crisis level, Yao said.According to MOC statistics, China received 74.37 billion U.S. dollars of FDI in the first nine months of 2008.The September FDI increase quickened from the year-on-year growth of 1.38 percent in August.The stable increase in China's FDI inflow was mainly boosted by the country's strong economic momentum, said Lu Zhengwei, chief analyst at the Industrial Bank.Although China's economic growth had eased, it was still strong, Lu said.China's GDP increased 10.3 percent year on year in the second quarter of this year, decelerating from first quarter's 11.9 percent. The National Bureau of Statistics is scheduled to release economic data for the third quarter next week.China's manufacturing sector received 47.6 percent of FDI inflow in the first nine months, while services industry got 45 percent, Yao said.A total of 19,209 foreign-invested enterprises were approved for establishment during the period, up 17.5 percent from one year earlier.Yao expected China's FDI inflow to hit 420 billion U.S. dollars in the country's 11th Five-year Plan (2006-2010) period, which was 1.5 times as much as that in the 2001-2005 period. This would make China the world's second largest destination for FDI.During the first nine months, China's outbound investment, excluding the financial sector, totaled 36.27 billion U.S. dollars, up 10.4 percent, he said. Some 30.9 percent of the investment outflow was for acquisitions of companies.

BEIJING, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- China is launching its sixth national population census Monday, ten years after the last one, as the world's most populous nation seeks a clearer and up-to-date picture of its population.From Nov. 1 to Nov. 10, more than six million census takers are to go door to door and visit over 400 million households across the country, recording family information and finishing the first stage of the census.In order to have more accurate figures, from Nov. 11 to Nov. 30, another round of census-taking will be launched, though on the smaller scale of 1/10000 of the population, officials with the country's National Bureau of Statistics said.Statistics will be calculated in December, with the key data scheduled to be released by the end of April 2011, sources said.In the last census, China's population stood at 1.29533 billion.
