SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State students will be able to learn all about Latinx representation in media through the life of the "Queen of Tejano."On what would have been the famed superstar's 48th birthday, SDSU's School of Journalism and Media Studies will offer a course dedicated to the late Selena Quintanilla Perez next spring called, "Selena and Latinx Media Representation."Students will be able to register for the class starting on Nov. 1, 2019.RELATED: Free textbook program saves Grossmont College students thousandsThe course will explore and deconstruct Latinx identities and socio-cultural representations through Selena's music, career, and influence, according to Nathian Rodriquez, assistant professor of digital media studies.“Students also need access to content in media landscapes to better understand the relationship between mediated representations and Latinx identity formation and maintenance,” Rodriguez said. “Speaking about these issues through the life of a well-known and visible celebrity allows students to utilize both pop culture and Latinx culture to deconstruct and interrogate the significance and broader meaning of minority-based mediated content.”Selena released 10 albums throughout her career, winning several awards including Tejano Music Awards, Billboard Latin Music Awards, and a Grammy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — She's just 5-years-old, but Faith Perkins is now a published author.Faith and her mother Neka wrote the book 'Faith and Trinity the Unicorn', inspired by the loss of Trinity, Faith's older sister."My husband and I lost Trinity prematurely at 24 weeks in May 2012, of course, that was a devastation, it hurt us, but our faith prompted us to try again, and that's when Faith was born," said Neka. In the book, Faith travels the world with her sister Trinity, who is a unicorn. Faith explains how she and her mother wrote the book together, "What we would do is me and her would sit down, and she would tell me what it would be like if we were playing with each other and whatever I would tell her she would write down on a piece of paper."Neka and Faith hope the book will help others coping with loss. "I hope to inspire so many other individuals to talk about it, it's not easy, it's painful," said Neka.But Neka says writing the book with Faith has helped her heal and find some closure. "I can only imagine what life would have been like with her here, so this allows us to keep the hope alive," said Neka.For Faith, getting the book published is only the beginning. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego's flu season has hit a record high.More than 20,000 lab-confirmed cases have been reported this season in San Diego, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Standing outside his Vista headquarters on Wednesday, Republican Darrell Issa told reporters that he's comfortable he'll stay ahead of opponent Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar in the run for a seat in California's 50th congressional district.“Statistically, it’s impossible for him to win with probably 60,000 votes left to come in,” he told reporters.Issa is a veteran politician looking to return to Congress after a two-year hiatus.
