SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- SeaWorld Wednesday released an endangered turtle rescued off the Oregon coast back into the ocean.The olive ridley sea turtle named Coral was rescued after being found stranded on an Oregon beach.SeaWorld says the 18 to 25-year-old turtle was taken to a Seattle aquarium for rehabilitation before being flown to San Diego for more treatment.Once the ocean temperature off the coast became stable around 70 degrees, Coral was released back into her ocean home about 10 miles off the San Diego coast.Experts installed a tracking device on the turtle’s shell in hopes of tracking Coral’s location as well as ocean temperature.According to SeaWorld, olive ridley turtles are found throughout the Pacific ocean, though they rarely stray any further north than Southern California. 803

And now Marian Walter is getting the red carpet treatment for her 106th birthday.Staff at Merrill Gardens at Oceanside say they were shocked to learn Walter was turning 106 because she's one of the most alive, intelligent, and funny people they've ever met.Walter was born in Brooklyn in 1913 and went on to earn a PhD. in Romance Languages and Literature at the University of North Carolina. She speaks seven languages and loved traveling the world. "Italy has just everything in the way of art, you know? It was wonderful. I hated to leave there!" said Walter. Her advice on staying forever-young is to work hard and never stop learning. "Learn as much as you can under any conditions you can do it!" said Walter.As for her birthday wish for the world, "Happiness, decentness. God wants us all to get along with one another. To help one another. To understand one another." Walter has two daughters, four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Board of Supervisors Wednesday approved a new initiative to encourage homeowners in the county's unincorporated areas to develop "granny flats" to help ease the region's housing shortage.The initiative will waive county permit and development impact fees over the next five years for property owners who want to build granny flats or other small dwellings on lots with existing homes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some beach cities throughout San Diego County Monday closed beaches as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to worsen. Following Gov. Gavin Newsom's stay at home order for California, several beach-side cities saw beachgoers enjoying the outdoors without the required six-foot social distancing.Monday, County Public Health Officer Wilma Wooten said the county will issue an amendment to the public heath order limiting social gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. Supervisor Nathan Fletcher added that people are encouraged to get exercise, but "what we don't want is the mass congregating of multiple social units."San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, however, didn't wait to see how that warning will play out around the county. "The City of Encinitas is closing all City beaches, access points to beaches, and parking lots adjacent to beaches until further notice," city officials said in a news release.Imperial Beach followed suit, saying it would close its beaches "due to the inability to enforce social distancing," beginning Tuesday at 12 p.m.Sunday, San Diego Police officers shut down beach parking lots and discouraged large crowds from gathering. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six people were arrested at a Pacific Beach DUI checkpoint Friday night, according to San Diego Police.The checkpoint was held on the 2700 block of Garnet Avenue between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.According to the department, nearly 1,350 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, 845 were screened, seven drivers evaluated, and six arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.“Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public,” the department said. 619
