For many Americans, they’re not quite sold on restaurants being safe despite most restaurants taking measures to protect staff and customers.ValuePenguin, which is associated with Lending Tree, conducted a survey of 1,000 Americans. The survey found that 44% of Americans feel indoor restaurants are unsafe to visit amid a pandemic, compared to 40% who believe they are safe. Women were more likely to say indoor dining is unsafe compared to men.More consumers, however, say getting takeout and dining outdoors is safe. Nearly 67% of respondents felt it’s safe to get takeout, and 58% said eating outdoors is safe.What do experts say?Many experts have said even with the precautions restaurants are taking, there is still a sizeable risk of catching the virus while dining inside. These risks, however, are generally significantly lower for those dining outside.Last month in an interview with MSNBC, Dr. Anthony Fauci pointed toward restaurants being among riskiest places to visit amid the pandemic. Fauci added that bars and gyms also are considered risky in his view.“When you have restaurants indoors in a situation where you have a high degree of infection in the community [and] you're not wearing masks, that's a problem,” Dr. Fauci said.Fauci pointed toward a September 2020 CDC study that found those who visited restaurants in the previous two weeks were two times more likely to test positive for the coronavirus than those who said they had not been inside a restaurant.“Reports of exposures in restaurants have been linked to air circulation,” the CDC said. “Direction, ventilation, and intensity of airflow might affect virus transmission, even if social distancing measures and mask use are implemented according to current guidance. Masks cannot be effectively worn while eating and drinking, whereas shopping and numerous other indoor activities do not preclude mask use.”Economic impact to restaurantsWith many restaurants forced to close indoor operations during the spring, and scale back indoor capacity during the summer, millions were out of work. According to the National Restaurant Association, 8 million restaurant workers, representing nearly half of the industry, were without jobs during the height of the pandemic. There remained over 2 million out-of-work restaurant employees as of the start of October.As of Wednesday, 100,000 restaurants have either closed for good, or for a significant period of time. As a whole, the restaurant industry is expected to lose 0 billion by the end of 2020.In hopes of minimizing spread and regaining customer confidence, the CDC and industry leaders have implemented cleaning procedures. Georgia's Republican Secretary of State says that despite voting for President Donald Trump and donating to his campaign, Trump threw him "under the bus" by attempting to overturn the results of the presidential election in the state.In an opinion piece for USA Today, Georgia Sec. of State Brad Raffensperger criticized Trump for refusing to "accept the facts" in narrowly losing the state to President-elect Joe Biden.In his opinion piece, Raffensperger noted that despite the circumstance, Georgia's elections went fairly smoothly, noting record numbers of mail-in and early voting and "minuscule" wait times on election day. But he said that all changed when Trump began publicly undermining trust in Georgia's elections."Elections are the bedrock of our democracy," Raffensperger wrote. "They need to be run fairly and, perhaps more important, impartially. That's not partisan. That's just American. Yet some don't seem to see it that way."As the head of elections in Georgia, Raffensperger has found himself at the center of attention since election day. Days after the polls closed, Raffensperger called for an unprecedented statewide audit of the presidential election in the state, which required a hand recount of election results.While the audit did find a few thousand votes for Trump that had not been previously counted, the new votes only represented a small change in the final tally. Georgia has certified its election, though the Trump campaign has filed for a machine recount of votes, which is unlikely to change the final tally.All the while, Trump has continued to cast doubt on the electoral process in the state — and Raffensperger says he's been personally pressured by fellow Republicans to find ways to exclude legally-cast ballots. He also says both he and his family have faced threats in the face of the recounts.In his piece, Raffensperger skewered both Republicans and Democrats who attempted to discredit the election process in the state."An onslaught of fake news and unrepentant disinformation threatened to tear the fabric of our country apart," he wrote. "People on both sides of the aisle generated controversies out of nowhere to stir up trouble."In particular, Raffensperger criticized Trump for "adopting the playbook" of Stacey Abrams, a Democratic gubernatorial candidate who lost out to Gov. Brian Kemp in 2018. Abrams never conceded to Kemp and only suspended her campaign after the state certified the results of the election.Raffensperger also went after Rep. Doug Collins, calling him a "failed sente candidate." He might have done it for Instragram or YouTube fame, but now a man who crossed a barricade guarding a hippopotamus enclosure at the Los Angeles Zoo is looking at potential trespassing charges after he was filmed spanking one of the animals.Video shows the man climbing the fence outside the hippo enclosure at the LA Zoo and sneaking up on two hippos, named Rosie and Mara. The man’s approach is very cautious, and then when finally close enough, he slaps one of the hippos on the rear before rushing back over the fence and taking a moment to celebrate his feat.The LAPD confirms they received a report of trespassing at the zoo and are investigating.In the video, Rosie, the hippo that was slapped, does not show much of a reaction, but her mother appears startled and looks up as the guy is still in the enclosure. It’s not clear if the man knows he’s being recorded, but clearly he’s showing off. The video started making the rounds on social media last week.While hippos at the zoo do have human interaction, this kind of treatment can create an unpredictable situation.The zoo released a statement Monday reading, in part:“The Zoo would like to remind everyone that it is never acceptable for a guest to enter the habitat of any animal at the Zoo, excluding our staff-supervised animal encounters. It is a privilege to observe these rare and endangered species, but they are still wild animals and their space must be respected at all times. Our first priority is always to keep our guests, staff, and animals safe.”Zoo officials have since put “No Trespassing” signs up around the zoo while police continue to look into the matter.According to California law, it is prohibited to enter zoo enclosures, and doing so may lead to a misdemeanor charge or infraction, L.A. Zoo spokeswoman April Spurlock told the Los Angeles Times.Zoo visitors are allowed to pet the hippos from behind a barricade for as part of its Hippo Encounter promotion. George Papadopoulos did not want to go to prison Monday. But 22 months after he first lied to the FBI about his contact with Russians while working for the Trump presidential campaign, the first person charged by the office of special counsel will do his time.Papadopoulos will surrender at the federal prison camp in Oxford, Wisconsin.
