SANYA, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Friday pledged to make concerted effort to promote the traditional friendship and practical cooperation between the two countries.     China sees Tanzania as its all-weather cooperative partner and the healthy development of bilateral relations could be treated as a model for China's sincerity and cooperation with Africa and all developing countries, Hu told Kikwete during their talks in this southern China seaside city.     To further the bilateral all-round cooperation, Hu proposed the two countries strengthen political trust, keep high-level contacts and dialogues in various forms, expand mutually beneficial trade cooperation, facilitate exchanges in the areas of education, culture, sports, public health, tourism and media, and encourage contacts among local governments, social organizations, women and youth of the two countries. Chinese President Hu Jintao and Tanzanian President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete on Friday pledged to make concerted effort to promote the traditional friendship and practical cooperation between the two countries    The Chinese government will continue to provide aid for Tanzania's economic and social development within its capacity, and encourage its enterprises to cooperate with Tanzanian companies in infrastructure construction, agriculture, resource exploration, telecommunication and personnel training, Hu said.     The two countries should also strengthen cooperation in the United Nations and on other multilateral occasions, and increase contacts on major international issues such as the UN Millennium Development Goals, multilateral trade mechanism and climate change.     The Tanzanian president, who is in China to attend the annual meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia, due to open on Saturday afternoon in Boao, about 300 kilometers from Sanya, called China a good friend and good partner.     Noting China's precious support and assistance for Tanzania over the past years, Kikwete said the Tanzanian people value the friendship with the Chinese people, reiterating that Tanzania firmly uphold the one-China policy.     He told the Chinese president that Tanzania is very glad to host the Olympic Torch relay and will exert the utmost efforts to promote its success.     Tanzania will never allow anyone to disrupt or sabotage the Olympic Torch run in the country, he added.     The Olympic Torch is scheduled to arrive in Dar es Salaam, the largest Tanzanian city and the only African city to host the relay, on April 12. The relay will be held the next day before the Olympic Torch continues its global tour to Muscat of Oman.     Kikwete said the people of Tanzania and all other African countries are firmly against the attempt of some people to disrupt the Beijing Olympic Games, resolutely support the efforts of the Chinese government and people, and believe the Beijing Olympic Games will be a complete success.     Hu thanked Kikwete for this and said the China-Africa new strategic partnership marks a new development stage of China-Africa cooperation. BEIJING, May 13 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from a major earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province has climbed to 9,219, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said here Tuesday morning.     The 7.8-magnitude quake has killed 9,219 people in eight affected provinces and municipality of Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Shanxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Chongqing, the ministry said in a release issued at 7 a.m.. A major eathquake measuring 7.8 on Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province at 2:28 p.m. on Monday.Of the killed, 8,993 were in Sichuan, 132 in Gansu, 85 in Shaanxi, eight in Chongqing and one in Yunnan, the ministry said.     The quake jolted Wenchuan County of Sichuan at 2:28 p.m. Monday, which also leveled some 500,000 rooms in the affected areas.     To cope with the catastrophe, the State Disaster Relief Commission and the Civil Affairs Ministry immediately initiated a "Level II emergency response plan" on Monday afternoon, and upgraded it to level I in the evening, the ministry said.     According to China's regulations, natural disasters in the country are classified into four categories based on their severity. The Level I emergency plan covers the most serious class of natural disasters.     A disaster relief work group of the State Council, China's Cabinet, rushed to the quake-hit county of Wenchuan on Monday evening to coordinate the rescue and relief work.     Meanwhile, the ministry said strong winds and hailstorms lashed Hubei, Hebei and Jiangsu provinces from Sunday evening to early Monday morning, affecting more than 630,000 people.     In central China's Hubei Province, the hailstorms attacked 10 counties, affecting 515,000 people, collapsing 85 rooms of 33 households and damaging another 4,761 rooms as of 11 a.m. Monday. The direct economic loss was estimated at 385 million yuan (55 million U.S. dollars).     Hailstorms also lashed three counties of north China's Hebei Province on Sunday, affecting 92,100 locals and resulting in a direct economic loss of 7.65 million yuan.     In east China's Jiangsu Province, 24,000 people also suffered from strong winds and hails Sunday evening. BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Thursday urged the Chinese army to carry forward the courageous spirit it had shown in the earthquake relief work earlier this year to better serve the people.     Hu, also the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee general secretary and Central Military Commission chairman, made the remark here while meeting soldiers and officers who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the disaster relief work.     On Wednesday, China held a ceremony to honor outstanding organizations and individuals for their contributions to the rescue and relief work after a catastrophic earthquake hit the southwestern Sichuan and some neighboring provinces on May 12, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing.     The People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops and armed police were among the first to provide rescue and relief following the quake.
