Donna and Sam Van Why are adjusting to a new lifestyle. Several years ago, after signs of failing short-term memory, doctors informed the couple that Donna was dealing with a neurocognitive disorder that’s possibly Alzheimers. Sam is now her primary caregiver.“I have a long ways to go in getting my cooking up to where Donna was before,” Van Why said.According to the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease. Director of Scientific Engagement Rebecca Edelmayer says the disease causes progressive memory and function loss due to nerve cell death that happens in the brain. This leads to stages of dementia.“Dementia are those symptoms that people are experiencing outwardly," Dr. Edelmayer said. "So this could be changes in their memory or their thinking. It could also be changing in their personality or some of their behaviors. Like they may have issues with depression, or agitation, or even sleep disturbances.”Currently, there’s no treatment for Alzheimer’s, but research is moving at a fast pace and Van Why is always thrilled to hear about any new discoveries.“We may not be to the point of the solved vaccine for Alzheimer’s, but these steps are tremendous,” Van Why said.Aside from treatment, preventing the disease in the first place would be substantial progress and getting a yearly flu shot could be an answer.“New research presented at the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference suggests that flu and pneumonia vaccines may be associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s,” Dr. Edelmayer said.Fourth-year medical student Albert Amran made the discovery when pulling medical history of nearly 40,000 people in a national database. He says he and his colleagues at McGovern Medical School at UT Health in Houston looked at patients' charts focusing on drug history to see if anything could be repurposed to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The influenza vaccination popped out.“What we’re thinking is happening that as people get older the people who gets shots essentially are keeping their immune systems in shape,” Amran said.However, it should be noted that this research isn’t conclusive. Amran says it’s all very new and needs to be observed in a clinical study. Edelmayer suggests the risk reduction for Alzheimer’s could even be from a completely different factor.“It’s very possible that these are indirect effects," Dr. Edelmayer said. "That people who are getting vaccinated also take care of their health in other ways. And things could really add to a lower risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias.”Amran says the next step is seeing if these findings can be confirmed in different populations. In the meantime, families feeling the effects of Alzheimer’s are doing what they can to help the ones they love while waiting for a treatment or cure.“I am trying my best to stay in the house or with Sam. Due to a recent rise in reported health issues, the US Food and Drug Administration warned on Tuesday against using or purchasing Rhino male enhancement products.Since 2007, the FDA said, it has identified more than 25 Rhino products, some with names such as Platinum Rhino 25000 and Krazzy Rhino 25000, that have hidden drug ingredients.The FDA said the products are often sold in single-serving packages at locations such as gas stations and convenience stores, or through online retailers such as eBay and Amazon. Recently, the products have also been found in international mail shipments, the agency said.In an email, eBay spokesman Ryan Moore said, "Product safety is important to eBay and we work hard to ensure our marketplace is free of harmful products. These types of items are prohibited under our policies, and therefore not allowed to be listed on the eBay market place." EBay regularly sweeps the site to remove such items, he said.Amazon has not responded to a request for comment."Over the past few years, the FDA has been combatting the retail sale of male enhancement drug products that are frequently misrepresented as dietary supplements and that contain hidden and potentially harmful active drug ingredients," said Donald D. Ashley, director of the Office of Compliance at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.According to the FDA, the "products contain undeclared ingredients that are the same as or structurally similar to active ingredients found in FDA-approved prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction."For example, some Rhino products contain the same active ingredient as Viagra and Cialis, sildenafil and/or tadalafil, respectively. These undeclared ingredients can lead to "significant safety issues and the risk of serious adverse events," the FDA said."The FDA has received reports of people experiencing chest pain, severe headaches and prolonged erections after taking a Rhino product that led to surgical intervention and hospitalization due to extreme drops in blood pressure," according to the agency.People who experience negative health effects or have issues with the quality or safety of a dietary supplement can report it to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information program. Products identified by the FDA as having hidden active drug ingredients can be found in the tainted products database.Not all misrepresented products are included in the database, and consumers should still be wary, the FDA noted."Consumers should be cautious about using certain products, especially those promoted for sexual enhancement, weight loss, bodybuilding and/or pain relief. EL CAJON (CNS) - A 49-year-old man was arrested Saturday on suspicion of fatally shooting a 31-year-old man in an unincorporated area near El Cajon.Daniel Christopher Allen, a resident of that unincorporated area, was booked into the San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murdering James Owen who also lived in unincorporated El Cajon, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.The shooting was reported in the 6000 block of Stallion Oaks Road, southeast of Dehesa Road and northeast of the Sycuan Resort, around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, sheriff's Lt. Thomas Seiver said.Before deputies arrived, an acquaintance of Owen drove him about a mile and a half from the shooting scene, Seiver said.Deputies stopped the vehicle on Stallion Oaks near Dehesa and found Owen inside suffering from a gunshot wound. It was not immediately clear if Allen was the driver.Owen was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. 921
