BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese official Li Changchun on Tuesday called for stepped-up efforts to push forward China's cultural development and prosperity here in Beijing.Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the remarks while visiting an exhibition held in honor of deceased Chinese painter Wu Guanzhong.Wu is widely recognized as the father of modern Chinese painting. BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense (MOD) Friday introduced its new spokesmen, Senior Colonel Geng Yansheng and Colonel Yang Yujun, to domestic and foreign media during a press tour to an engineering regiment of the People's Liberation Army (PLA).Geng, 50, and Yang, 40, have become the ministry's third and fourth spokesmen.Their appointment came ahead of the PLA's founding anniversary on Aug. 1. Their two predecessors, Hu Changming and Huang Xueping, have been transferred to other jobs in the ministry.Geng told Xinhua that the MOD plans to hold regular press briefings, since 16 other ministries have done so.About 140 reporters, photographers and cameramen from home and abroad visited the engineering regiment building in southern suburban Beijing, watching dozens of soldiers demonstrating a mock rescue operation at a building which was "reduced" to rubble in a quake.Founded in 1964, the engineering regiment trains rescue members for the China International Search and Rescue (CISAR), which was established in 2001 with its personnel drawn from the China Seismological Bureau and the General Hospital of the Armed Police Force.The CISAR has completed six domestic rescue operations in Xinjiang, Qinghai and Sichuan, and six international rescue missions in Algeria, Pakistan, Iran, Indonesia and Haiti.After watching the simulation training, many reporters held interviews with the CISAR members and enquired as to how they managed to work in the face of big disasters."I felt deeply sad and hopeless when someone died in front of me after the quake," said Gao Yansheng, a 19-year-old CISAR member, who took part in the Yushu earthquake search and rescue operation in April.Another CISAR member, whose name was not given, said he was "astonished and also anxious" during the Sichuan earthquake rescue work in 2008.Liu Xiangyang, deputy director of the CISAR, said in an interview with Xinhua that CISAR members became physically and psychologically stronger after going through the Sichuan earthquake rescue work.CISAR members needed to learn more about earthquakes and put up with more complicated disaster situations, Liu added."It will become a routine activity of the PLA to open its military bases for the media interaction beginning around August 1," said Senior Colonel Li Zhen, vice director with the MOD's International Communication Office. "It is for the third time in the last three years that the MOD has tried to showcase the transparency of the 2.3-million strong PLA. In 2008, the ministry invited 103 foreign and domestic reporters to an armored division of the PLA's thump-card No. 38 group army. BEIJING, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese military forces are rushing to prevent disease in mudslide-devastated Zhouqu County in northwest China's Gansu Province as high temperatures hit the area where at least 1,156 people were dead.While giving medical treatment to 12,000 local residents, soldiers have also sterilized an area of 128,000 square meters in the disaster-hit county, Wang Wenjie, a senior officer with the Lanzhou Military Area Command of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), said Friday.On Thursday, the Ministry of Health warned of disease-prevention challenges in Zhouqu, as dead bodies and dead animals entombed in the mud may easily decay in the hot weather.Although wells have been dug up to ensure water supply, the ministry said sterilization work is difficult as the water may be contaminated during transportation and storage.In order to ensure rescuers' health, more disinfectant and anti-sunstroke medicine has been dispatched to Zhouqu along with fresh clothing.While more equipment is en route to Zhouqu, Wang said more epidemic prevention workers are ready to go to Zhouqu if needed.Tuo Chengxiang, a senior officer with the Chinese People's Armed Police Force, said the main roads into the township are covered in sludge, hampering vehicular access to the area.A total of 6,281 soldiers and armed policemen are participating in the rescue and relief work in Zhouqu. They have saved 45 lives and delivered 808 tonnes of relief supplies.Besides personnel, 17 helicopters and aeroplanes and 35 rubber rafts have been mobilized to the disaster-hit area.Also on Friday, the PLA General Political Department issued a circular ordering soldiers and policemen in Zhouqu to lead the rescue and relief work while giving top priority to saving people's lives.

GONGSHAN, Yunnan, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers are racing to search for 80 people still missing three days after rain-triggered mudslides hit a remote mountain town in southwest China's Yunnan Province, killing at least 12.By 7 p.m. Friday, rescuers had recovered six more bodies, bringing the death toll to 12, said Hou Xinrong, deputy head of the Drung-Nu Autonomous County of Gongshan, which administers Puladi Township where the mudslides occurred.Hampered by the mountain terrain and persistent rainfall, the rescue efforts had been progressing slowly, Hou said. "Excavators can't proceed to the site and mountain torrents could be triggered at any time due to the downpours."Most of the missing people are employees of the Yujin Iron Mine and residents of Puladi, where the mudslides struck at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday.Around Friday noon, a Xinhua reporter saw several soldiers digging in the debris with spades, hoes and sometimes their bare hands in hardest-hit Litoudi Village."We've found a body here, but it was stuck in the mud. We have to be gentle to ensure the integrity of the body," said Yang Pingang, an officer with the Yunnan Provincial Military Area Command. "We want to show our respects to the deceased."

BEIJING, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Rainstorms and floods sweeping through south China have left at least 118 people dead and 47 missing since July 1, said a statement on the Civil Affairs Ministry website Wednesday.By 4 p.m. Wednesday, more than 32.3 million people in 10 southern provinces and Chongqing Municipality had been affected by continuous rainstorms and floods, the ministry said.About 101,000 houses were destroyed and close to 1.1 million people had been relocated, it said.Direct economic losses were estimated at 22.2 billion yuan (about 3.3 billion U.S. dollars).In Anhui Province alone, at least four people had been confirmed dead since July 8, whereas direct economic losses amounted to 2.3 billion yuan.The ministry had allocated 3,000 tents, 3,000 folding beds, and 20,000 quilts to Anhui.In Hubei Province, rain-triggered floods and disasters have left 28 people dead and two others missing since July 3, the provincial civil affairs administration said Wednesday.Rains and floods have disrupted lives of 9.24 million people, forcing more than 256,700 people to be relocated. Nearly 34,000 houses toppled and 923,700 hectares of crops were damaged, incurring 7.64 billion yuan in direct economic losses.In Yunnan Province, at least three people were killed and more than 1,000 residents were affected after a downpour hit Hongqiao Township in Lijiang City Wednesday.
