WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's rapid economic growth is good for the U.S. workers, and the U.S. government is committed to improving bilateral economic relations with China, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."China has lifted almost 200 million people out of poverty (in the past two decades). And in the years ahead, hundreds of millions more Chinese will ascend into the middle class," Locke said at a U.S.-China commercial relations forum, which was held in Washington ahead of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) session scheduled for Dec. 14-15."The United States welcomes this growth because this is good for the people of China ... it's good for the global economy, and good for U.S. business and ultimately, U.S. workers," said Locke. He noted that as recently as 40 years ago, the commercial relationship between the United States and China barely existed. But in the recent decades, "we have seen our countries grow progressively closer."In 2009, the bilateral trade volume reached some 365 billion dollars. China was the largest supplier of U.S. goods imports in 2009 and was the third-largest market for U.S. exports, only after Canada and Mexico.Locke mentioned that as U.S. Commerce Secretary, he has visited China for four times."Each time I visit China, I'm absolutely amazed by the transformation and the progress within China," he said.Locke noted that although there are disagreements between the two sides, there are more opportunities for cooperation."In many areas, especially in emerging industries, like clean energy and biotechnology, the interests of China and the United States are tied together. And the reform as good for the U.S. will be good for China as well," he added.Locke also revealed that during the upcoming 21st session of the JCCT in Washington D.C., the two countries will seek to further "nurture and improve the most highly-scrutinized bilateral economic relationship on Earth.""This is our most important bilateral dialogue or mechanism for resolving trade and investment issues between our two countries," he stressed. The session will be co-chaired by Locke and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack will also join the dialogue.

BRUSSELS, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and EU leaders on Tuesday signed a first joint declaration on strengthening dialogue and cooperation on youth issues as the 2011 EU-China Year of Youth kicked off here.Androulla Vassiliou, EU Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, said at the opening ceremony that the year would open up new horizons for young people from Europe and China by enabling them to share experiences and learn from each other."I hope that such exchanges will inspire concrete ideas for cooperation and establish long-lasting partnerships," Vassiliou said. The opening ceremony was the first of a series of exchange activities to be held throughout the year in Europe and China. The EU-China Year of Youth was jointly initiated by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso at the 12th EU-China summit held in 2009."The Year will provide an interactive platform for European and Chinese young people to enhance mutual understanding and friendship through creativity, tolerance and openness. We hope they can open a new page of people-to-people contacts between Europe and China," said Wang Xiao, President of the All-China Youth Federation.Wang led a delegation of 100 Chinese young people who arrived in Brussels earlier this week to meet with their 100 European counterparts for the first time. The 200 young representatives from the EU and China also exchanged ideas on a variety of issues including volunteering, mobility, culture and creativity prior to the opening ceremony. Those from China will also visit the European Parliament, the College of Europe and EU's Court of Justice later this week. The yearlong program, co-hosted by the European Commission and the All-China Youth Federation, aims to promote intercultural dialogue and strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between European and Chinese youth, as well as encourage young people to care about and support the development of EU-China relations. The EU-China Year of Youth also coincides with the European Year of Volunteering and the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Volunteering, thus voluntary activities involving young Europeans and Chinese will be encouraged throughout the Year. With Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang wrapping up his three- nation Europe tour on Wednesday, the Sino-EU relation has had a good start this year in terms of political mutual trust and economic cooperation, while the kick-off of the EU-China Year of Youth is expected to break new ground in all-round exchanges among young people."The EU and China are now more than just trading partners, but also strategic partners. We should work together for a future of prosperity," said Ambassador Song Zhe, Head of the Mission of China to the European Union.

SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called for concerted efforts to realize strong, sustainable and balanced growth of the world economy at the Group of 20 (G-20) summit here on Friday.Delivering a speech entitled "Build on Achievements and Promote Development" at the summit, he presented a four-point proposal for the major economies to jointly promote global economic recovery and growth.FOUR-POINT PROPOSAL FOR GLOBAL ECONOMIC GROWTHChinese President Hu Jintao attends the inauguration of the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Seoul, capital of South Korea, Nov. 12, 2010.Hu said the world economy was slowly recovering thanks to the concerted efforts of the G-20 and the entire international community, but total demand remained insufficient in the absence of new sources of growth"Countries differ in policy objectives, making macroeconomic policy coordination even more difficult and global recovery even more fragile and uneven," he said. The Chinese leader had been promoting cooperation and coordination since he arrived in Seoul for the summit on Thursday morning."We must adopt an attitude responsible to history and the future, bear in mind the common interests of mankind, build on what we have already achieved and continue to work in concert for strong, sustainable and balanced growth of the world economy," Hu said. The first point of Hu's proposal at the summit was that the world community should improve the framework for strong, sustainable and balanced growth and promote cooperative development."Strong, sustainable and balanced economic growth is of great significance to the whole world," he said."We should stick to the country-led principle, take into full account the different national circumstances and development stages of various members, and appreciate and respect each country's independent choice of development path and policies," he added. The second point was that the world community should champion open trade and promote coordinated development."We must be firmly committed to free trade, to the consensus reached at previous G-20 summits, and to the effort of opposing all forms of protectionism and removing existing trade protectionist measures," he said. The Chinese president also called on the world community to reform the financial system and promote stable development."We should continue to push for fair and merit-based selection of the management of international financial institutions, and enable more people from developing countries to take up mid-level and senior management positions," he said. The last point of Hu's proposal was that the world community should narrow the development gap and promote balanced development.@ "We must endeavor to build a new and more equal and balanced global partnership and encourage developed and developing countries to have more mutual understanding and closer coordination rather than follow the old path of trading accusations and public confrontation," he said.
