WILLIAMSTOWN, Ky. — Northern Kentucky law enforcement officials are working extra hard this time of year to keep any "Grinchiness" out of their respective "Whovilles."Before Grant County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Conrad hits the road these days, he arms himself with kindness, in the form of gift cards.“It’s part of the Sheriff's Santa Project,” Conrad said. It’s an idea that was brought to the office three years ago by their chaplain.“I really think projects like this give us a glass-half-full attitude, rather than a glass-half-empty,” Grant County Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Rev. Tim Polley said. “Don’t we all need some joy in our lives?”The answer for Grant County’s deputies is "yes."“We make a legit traffic stop,” Conrad said. “In lieu of writing a citation, we hand out a gift card to our local businesses.”Several drivers who got a Sheriff's Santa surprise were both grateful and thankful, a nice reminder to use a turn signal. The project does more than just promote good driving, it also drives business to local shops and restaurants who could use a customer boost during the coronavirus pandemic.“Typically, we deal with the more negative aspects of humanity, so when we can do anything that's positive, it's a blessing to us,” Conrad said. “We swore an oath to the Constitution. I got into this job 15 years ago 'cause I wanted to help people.”Now he’s helping people by helping to give back to the community.“Everybody thinks they're out to get us, but they're here to help us,” said driver Justin Ost, who got a gift card to a local barbecue restaurant.Polley sought out local businesses to donate the gift cards, or people to donate money to be exchanged into cards. “It is just that little nudge that some people need to say there is still good in this world,” he said. The Sheriff's Santa Project runs through Christmas Eve.This story originally reported by Kristyn Hartman on wcpo.com. 1912

While civil rights lawyers said Zachary Cruz was subjected to torture in the Broward County Jail back in March, the father of a teenager shot and killed at Stoneman Douglas High School said he's faced his own kind of torture because of Zachary Cruz's brother.FULL COVERAGE: Parkland school shooting | Zachary Cruz arrested near Park Vista HS"I've got no sympathy for anyone with that last name," said Andrew Pollack, whose daughter Meadow was killed in February.Nexus Services filed a federal lawsuit for Zachary Cruz against the Broward County Sheriff's Office, a judge and prosecutors."You can’t treat and trample somebody’s constitutional rights because they’re related to an individual who did a heinous act," said Mario Williams, civil rights chief of Nexus Derechos Humanos. They claim because he's related to accused school shooter Nikolas Cruz, Zachary Cruz was tortured in the Broward County Jail with 24-hour lighting, constant one-on-one watch with intimidation and harassment and forced to wear a heavy restraint vest."Records show Mr. Cruz had extreme sleep deprivation over the course of four or five days," said Dallas LaPierre, an attorney for Nexus Derechos Humanos. That went on after a judge ordered a 0,000 bond for what’s typically a trespassing charge."If he was related not to his brother then he would’ve been released immediately," Williams said. The group said that excessive bond and torture is based on bias and is all unconstitutional."We’re all better off when constitutional rights are protected," said Mike Donovan, president and CEO of Nexus Services Inc.They also said those unfair practices basically forced Cruz to accept a plea deal for trespassing, which included extraordinary requirements as part of his probation. Part of that deal landed him back in jail this week for driving without a license and being too close to a school."Just listen to the judge and do what you have to do to stay out of prison," Pollack said. "Stay away from schools."Pollack said his main concern right now is making schools safer, and having Zachary Cruz close to schools makes people understandably nervous."Look at the damage that’s been done in the community," he said.Prosecutors dropped the school proximity portion of Cruz's probation violation during a hearing Thursday because he was driving past a Lake Worth high school, not actually on the school's campus.Cruz's lawyer said Broward County Sheriff's Office deputies came into Palm Beach County to follow Cruz after his caretaker reported to them he was driving without a license. They saw him driving near Park Vista Community High School, went back to Broward County to get arrest affidavits and then contacted Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to arrest Cruz. 2804

WILMINGTON, Del. — Joe Biden's meeting Thursday with a group of Democratic and Republican governors is his latest attempt to fight through President Donald Trump's unprecedented attempt to block the president-elect's transition to power.Biden and vice president-elect Kamala Harris have planned a virtual session with the National Governors Association's leadership team for Wednesday afternoon, which includes five Republicans and four Democrats. All the Democrats and a majority of the Republicans involved have acknowledged Biden as the winner of the White House election. The president-elect's remarks come as Georgia is slated to release results of a hand recount of the 2020 presidential election in the state. While reports indicate that the tally will include a few more votes for Trump, he will still likely fall far short of overtaking Biden's current lead in the state.Georgia is the only state that the Associated Press has not called for either candidate. Even without Georgia's electoral votes, Biden would still have enough to win the presidency.Trump is continuing to push unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud. On Thursday, he continued to court Republican election officials in Wayne County, Michigan in an attempt to de-certify the results of the heavily Democratic county. 1298

When Dr. Harold Bornstein described in hyperbolic prose then-candidate Donald Trump's health in 2015, the language he used was eerily similar to the style preferred by his patient. It turns out the patient himself wrote it, according to Bornstein."He dictated that whole letter. I didn't write that letter," Bornstein told CNN on Tuesday. "I just made it up as I went along."The admission is an about face from his answer more than two years when the letter was released and answers one of the lingering questions about the last presidential election. The letter thrust the eccentric Bornstein, with his shoulder-length hair and round eyeglasses, into public view."His physical strength and stamina are extraordinary," he crowed in the letter, which was released by Trump's campaign in December 2015. "If elected, Mr. Trump, I can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency."The missive didn't offer much medical evidence for those claims beyond citing a blood pressure of 110/65, described by Bornstein as "astonishingly excellent." It claimed Trump had lost 15 pounds over the preceding year. And it described his cardiovascular health as "excellent."The White House didn't respond to a request for comment about Bornstein's claim.Later, as questions mounted over the health both of Trump and his rival Hillary Clinton, Bornstein offered a more businesslike assessment, listing things such as Trump's height, weight and prescription medications. He later told CNN's Drew Griffin he'd dashed off the first letter as he was seeing patients."I was just rushed for time," he said in September 2016. "I had people to see."He insisted then that the words were his own."Did I really write that letter? Yeah," he said. Now, as Bornstein re-enters the spotlight claiming Trump's ex-bodyguard Keith Schiller robbed his office when Schiller retrieved Trump's medical records, the story behind the letter is becoming clearer."That's black humor, that letter. That's my sense of humor," he said. "It's like the movie 'Fargo': It takes the truth and moves it in a different direction."He said Trump read out the language as Bornstein and his wife were driving across Central Park."(Trump) dictated the letter and I would tell him what he couldn't put in there," he said. "They came to pick up their letter at 4 o'clock or something." 2369
