SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County Fire is offering some residents key safe boxes that allow first responders to gain access to homes in emergency situations, County News Center reports.The boxes, called KnoxBoxes, are installed on or near the front door and can only be opened by local firefighters responding to life-threatening emergencies, the county says.County Supervisor Dianne Jacob says the program fulfills an urgent need.“For older folks with chronic health conditions or in need of help with basic activities, KnoxBoxes can be a lifesaver,” said Jacob. “These devices can also provide some peace of mind in a region where wildfire is a year-round threat.”County Fire received a federal grant to help purchase 200 boxes. The county plans to loan the boxes to residents in rural communities.So far, the county says it has received 70 applications. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Humane Society officers rescued 21 cats living in filthy conditions in a South Bay home on Tuesday.SDHS said Wednesday officers were working to recover more from the home.The cats were recovered from the home and are suffering from a range of health conditions, including malnutrition, fleas, upper respiratory infections, and some eye traumas that were left untreated. Wednesday, one of those cats was scheduled to undergo emergency eye surgery.Humane Society staff say the cats will be cared for at the shelter but did not say whether they would eventually be offered for adoption.SDHS did not say whether charges were being filed against the homeowner. 692

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police homicide detectives investigated Monday the death of a woman whose body was discovered by her sister.Officers were called to the home in the 4000 block of Van Dyke Ave. between Polk and University Avenues just before 9 a.m., police said.A woman went to the home to find her sister, who she had not seen since Saturday. When there was no answer at the condominium, the sister contacted the landlord.Upon entry, the woman found her 36-year-old sister lying dead on the floor.Family has identified the victim as Muna Kuri. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County Board of Supervisors held an emergency meeting behind closed doors Thursday evening to discuss how to potentially keep businesses open after Gov. Gavin Newsom denied removing San Diego State’s COVID-19 cases from the county’s total case rate.The meeting, though, yielding no new actions by the county.In a statement, Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said since the board took no action, "it would be inappropriate to comment on the deliberation.""In general, I believe we should be fighting COVID-19 and not the state of California.
