Alan Naiman was known for his frugality -- he wore Costco jeans, bought his favorite pocket T-shirts at a grocery store and squirreled away every penny he could. So when he died, friends were surprised to learn that he was leaving more than million to charities in the Seattle area.The 63-year-old never married and never had children, but kids were very important to him. It was just in his nature to save the money and put it aside," Karan said.Karan said he was one of the few people who knew just how much money Naiman had."I think he always knew that he was going to leave his money to charity," Karan said.The friends had talked about investments and savings over the years, and when the time came for Naiman to make a will he asked Karan to be his executor.He said Naiman received a sizable inheritance when his father died, which added to his fortune.The scrimping, saving and deal hunting was more like a hobby to Naiman than a sacrifice."Saving money was sort of a game to him," Karan said. "He would brag about how he had a whole day out and didn't have to spend a single cent."Naiman loved cars, and when his brother died in 2013 he made a rare splurge on himself and bought a Scion FR-S sports car."It's a nice little sports car, but it's not a Mustang or a Corvette or a Porsche that he easily could have afforded," Karan said.Naiman considered doing more traveling or buying a house with a nice view, but his cancer interrupted those plans.Karan said that after his diagnosis, Naiman spent a lot of time researching charities.One group that's benefited from his kindness is the Pediatric Interim Care Center, which cares for medically fragile babies suffering from prenatal drug exposure.The group 2349

A World Health Organization funded study published this week in the Lancet found that masks, physical distancing and eye protection offer substantial reduction in the spread of COVID-19. The study cautioned that even when used effectively and in combination, none of the interventions will completely prevent the spread of the virus. But the study’s authors offer some optimism the virus can be significantly slowed sans a vaccine. Keeping a distance of 1 meter in both healthcare and community settings reduced the risk of infection by 82 percent, according the research authored by a group of six infectious disease experts. Every additional meter of separation more than doubled the relative protection. “This evidence is important to support community physical distancing guidelines and shows risk reduction is feasible by physical distancing,” the study said. “Moreover, this finding can inform lifting of societal restrictions and safer ways of gathering in the community.”The study found that infectious droplets can travel up to 8 feet, and can stay in the air for hours. The use of masks and respirators with those infected with the virus reduced the risk of spreading the infection by 85%. The authors analyzed data that showed that N95 respirators in healthcare settings were up to 96% effective. Other masks were found to be 77% effective.Dr. Derek Chu from McMaster University, and co-author of the study, found that the most effective homemade masks should be ones that are water-resistant, have multiple layers, and are a good facial fit. The study also suggests that wearing eye protection resulted in a 78% reduction in infection; infection via the ocular route might occur by aerosol transmission or self-inoculation the study said. After Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Greenland is not for sale, President Donald Trump said on Tuesday evening that he will postpone an upcoming meeting between the two leaders, citing Frederiksen's comments as the reason. Trump said on Sunday that his meeting with Frederiksen was "not for this reason at all. But we're looking at it."But Trump's tweet goes against what he said on Sunday. A Sacramento police officer has died after being shot while on duty and helping a woman retrieve her belongings from a home, according to Sacramento Police."We are devastated tonight," Deputy Chief Dave Peletta said at a press conference early Thursday morning. "There are no words to convey the depth of sadness we feel or how heartbroken we are for the family of our young, brave officer."Police were called on Wednesday about a disturbance between a man and a woman, according to Sacramento Police Sgt. They met the woman involved at another location and went back to the home with her to gather some of her things, Chandler said.While officers were at the scene, officer Tara O'Sullivan was shot, according to Peletta. But it's not for everyone — about 8 percent of American teenagers would qualify."It's not just 30 pounds overweight, it's more — more like 75 to 100 pounds overweight, with an identifiable complication of the obesity," Inge said.Some doctors are hesitant to try the procedure and are concerned about the surgical risk, he said. They want to make sure the teens get enough nutrients with the new restrictive diet.Inge said he hopes the research will lead to more access for teenagers who want to explore the option.
