BUFFALO, N.Y. – A powerful moment was caught on camera at an upstate New York protest.Officer Armonde “Moe” Badger with the Buffalo Police Department led protesters in the hymn, “We Shall Overcome” on Tuesday. In a video of Badger’s performance, you can see protesters gathered around the officer and singing along.Badger is one of department’s two “singing cops” who use their vocal prowess for community outreach throughout the city. An Italian policeman who was allegedly killed by two teenage American tourists was stabbed 11 times with a knife carried into Italy from the United States, according to police in Rome.Gen. Francesco Gargaro, of the Provincial Carabinieri Command, said the weapon was brought to the country by the 19-year-old suspect, Finnegan Lee Elder.Gargaro added that some of the wounds sustained by the fallen officer, Mario Cerciello Rega, were "very big, 17 centimeters (7 inches) deep, the length of the blade."Rega was killed Friday in Rome shortly after returning to work from his honeymoon. The 35-year-old was attempting to recover a backpack allegedly stolen by Elder and Gabriel Natale Hjorth, 18, after a botched drug deal, say officers. Police said that Elder confessed in the early hours of the interrogation on Friday to the killing.Meanwhile, Rega's funeral was held in his hometown of Somma Vesuviana, near Naples, on Monday. His casket was draped with the Italian flag as it was carried into the same church where he was married less than two months ago.Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who has called for life prison sentences for the accused teens, attended the service.The officer's death has gripped Italy -- the story is leading many of its newspaper headlines -- and hundreds of people gathered outside the church to pay their respects.Botched dealThe incident unfolded after the two US citizens approached a man about buying drugs, according to police. After being sold crushed aspirin instead of cocaine, officers allege that the Americans stole a backpack off the man.The teenagers subsequently answered the owner's cellphone, which they had also taken, and told him "they would not return the backpack without 100 euros (1) and 1 gram of cocaine," police added.The owner of the stolen bag then contacted the police and two unarmed plainclothes officers met the American suspects under the guise of retrieving it, police said.Both Americans are accused of assaulting the policemen, who reportedly identified themselves as law enforcement officers during the meeting early on Friday morning. Elder is accused of stabbing Rega 11 times before fleeing the scene.The two Americans were arrested Friday evening inside their hotel room, close to the scene of the stabbing. They are accused of aggravated murder and attempted extortion, police said.At the hotel room, police said they found the weapon hidden in a ceiling panel as well as the clothes worn during the crime.Elder recognized the knife police say is the murder weapon "as his own," according to court documents seen by CNN.'Contrasting' statementsThe two suspects have turned on each other, according to those documents. The teenagers accuse each other "reciprocally" and their stories are "absolutely in contrast" with one another, the documents said.They also add that Hjorth's testimony is closer to the police's version of events. Elder is accused of the stabbing, though both are being held on suspicion of murder.Over the weekend, the police alleged that both Americans confessed to taking part in the assault, and say Elder confessed in the early hours of the interrogation on Friday to murder.According to the court documents, Elder had not understood that the two men that approached them were police officers.Elder's appointed public prosecutor, Francesco Codini, said that during his court appearance Saturday his client "maintained his right to remain silent" in front of a judge.Elder's family said in a statement on Monday that the US consul in Rome was allowed to briefly visit Elder."We continue to gather facts about his case through his legal representatives. The photograph was leaked to the respected Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.Suspect Hjorth's lawyer, Emiliano Sisini, confirmed to CNN that his client was the blindfolded suspect in the picture. He does not know how long Hjorth was blindfolded for, but said the incident took place before his interrogation.Italian police have confirmed the authenticity of the photo, and told CNN that a two-pronged investigation has been launched into why the suspect was blindfolded and who leaked the photo to the press."The general command of the Carabinieri police strongly distances itself from the photo and the distribution of the photo of the people detained for the homicide of the Officer Mario Cerciello Rega. Boeing on Sunday said some of its 737 planes, including many 737 Max aircraft, may have faulty parts on their wings. It's the latest problem Boeing faces as it tries to get its most important and popular airplane, the grounded 737 Max, back in the air.Working with the Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing said it has reached out to airlines that fly 737 planes, advising them to inspect their slat track assemblies on Max and NG aircraft. The 737 NG series includes the 737-600, -700, -800 and -900 planes.Leading edge slats are an aerodynamic control surface that extend from the front of the wing. Some the tracks may not meet manufacturing standards and may need to be replaced, Boeing and the FAA said. They said if the parts are found to be defective, airlines should replace them before returning the planes to service.The faulty parts could fail prematurely or crack. The FAA said a part failure would not bring down a plane, it could damage an aircraft while in flight.Boeing has sent out a service bulletin and the FAA will issue an airworthiness directive requiring airlines to inspect and repair its slat track assemblies within 10 days.The company discovered the problem Friday, when Boeing was meeting with the parts supplier. Boeing employees noticed some of the parts were not heat treated, which led them to believe there might be a safety issue.The development comes as Boeing seeks to get the 737 Max back in the air. The plane was grounded worldwide after a fatal crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jet in March, which followed a fatal crash of a Lion Air jet in Indonesia in October. Crash investigators have focused on an automatic safety feature on the jet as a possible contributor to the crashes.The newly discovered issue affects 148 slat tracks produced by a single supplier, Boeing said. The company said it believes 20 737 Max and 21 737 NG planes may have defective slat tracks. But the FAA advised airlines to check an additional 179 Max planes and 133 NGs to determine if there parts are also faulty. CANTON, S.D. – No matter where you live in the United States, debt can play a big role in your life. Sarah Woods of Canton, South Dakota, has battled debt nearly her entire life, almost two decades. “Debt seems like almost a constant way of life,” said Woods.But life, some might argue, wasn't fair to Woods.“Within three months I got married, found out I had cancer and also had our first child,” said Woods. “So, you take three of the biggest things that could possibly happen in our life and roll them into your early 20s, I mean you’re going to start out on the wrong foot and since then it’s just been one struggle after another.”Woods and her husband now have three boys and taking care of them isn’t cheap. Woods says some months their pantry's been bare.“To actually have to reach out and say no, we are personally struggling is a hard one,” said Woods.Lori Pudenz helps with the food pantry that's run out of the Canton Lutheran Church, where Woods works. Pudenz says the pantry’s been a huge blessing.“My opinion is nobody should go hungry and that’s what we’re here for,” said Pudenz.Woods' husband is a machinist and she works full-time at the church, but it still hasn't been enough to overcome a mountain of debt that began with cancer at 19 years old.“I couldn’t imagine having an extra in my bank account that wasn’t due to someone else.”Not all of Woods’ debt has come from being a victim of circumstances. She admittedly says she has made some very bad decisions. But what has changed her life is a class on debt taught at the church where she works.“I can see light at the end of the tunnel,” said Woods. “We’re definitely getting there. I’ve been able to learn a lot of different life skills and really face my debts.”And after a full day at work at the church, Woods goes to work at home. She has created a plus size boutique called Becky’s Closet. “The last few months have been tremendous for business. It has created Christmas for us.” 1975
