Former President Barack Obama on Tuesday criticized President Donald Trump's decision to exit the Iran deal, a pillar of Obama's legacy on foreign policy."Indeed, at a time when we are all rooting for diplomacy with North Korea to succeed, walking away from the JCPOA risks losing a deal that accomplishes -- with Iran -- the very outcome that we are pursuing with the North Koreans," Obama said in a statement. "But the consistent flouting of agreements that our country is a party to risks eroding America's credibility, and puts us at odds with the world's major powers."The former President was joined in his disapproval of Trump's decision on Tuesday by former Vice President Joe Biden and former Secretary of State John Kerry.Biden said in a statement following Trump's announcement that the decision is "a profound mistake" and that it would put Iran on the path to developing nuclear weapons without diplomatic recourse."This wholly unnecessary crisis could ultimately put the safety of our country and our fellow citizens, including thousands of men and women in uniform serving across the Middle East, at risk by setting us back on a path to war with Iran," Biden said.Kerry condemned the move by Trump to abandon the agreement he had helped forge."Today's announcement weakens our security, breaks America's word, isolates us from our European allies, puts Israel at greater risk, empowers Iran's hardliners, and reduces our global leverage to address Tehran's misbehavior, while damaging the ability of future Administrations to make international agreements," Kerry's statement said.In the leadup to Trump's announcement, Kerry called for Trump to keep the agreement intact, and on Monday, Trump criticized Kerry on Twitter for what he called "shadow diplomacy." 2482

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A Lee County deputy is starting an incredible journey.  He will run nearly 400 miles from Lee County to Tallahassee in honor of fallen officers.Sgt. Sammy Gonzalez said this will be a grueling and difficult run, but it’s not impossible.  He has been with the sheriff’s office for 10 years now and said he's doing this run to help families of fallen officers."I've been running nonstop, it's almost a year for preparation for this," he said.Thursday morning, Gonzalez begins his 390-mile journey from Fort Myers to Tallahassee in the next 8-9 days.“It’s going to be an emotional finish. I can't even explain what it's going to be like when I arrive at the state capitol."Back in 2005, Sgt Gonzalez had a good friend killed in the line of duty.  "I tell people I can't bring back these fallen officers back, but what I'm doing is I'm raising money and awareness for those families who are left behind," he said. So far, he's raised ,000 for the charity Concerns of Police Survivors, and he hopes to raise ,000 more by the time he gets to the state capitol."Last year, 135 officers died in the United States," he said. "That's 135 too many."The first day, Gonzalez will run about 40 miles. He said they've planned it out every step of the way.  "I'm staying in an RV, actually," he said. "I have a 3-person team from the sheriff’s office that will be with me the entire trip."My only concern is the heat," he said. I've ran in hot conditions in the past, and it can play tricks on the mind."He will get to Tallahassee just in time for the state's annual memorial that honors and celebrates lives lost in the line of duty.Sgt. FREMONT, Neb. (KMTV) — For two sisters, the pandemic has brought some joy. After being separated at an early age, they've reunited and they say it was all because of COVID-19."To find out how I got to find her was because it was the Lord’s blessing," said Doris Crippen.Doris may be the first person happy about getting COVID-19."No, I seen her once when she was a baby and I held her. And the rest of my life growing up I never thought I’d find her again," said Crippen.Doris and Bev Boro were two long-lost sisters and are now reunited at Methodist Fremont Health."Our search is over, we don't have to look anymore," said Crippen.Boro is a medication aide at the hospital, and when she recently saw a list of patient names, one caught her attention -- Crippen's. So she wrote a message on a dry erase board since Doris is hard of hearing."I went in with one of the whiteboards and I said to her, 'is your father Wendall Huffman?' She goes 'that's my daddy', and I pointed at myself and I go 'that's mine, too.'" said Boro.Crippen, who has since recovered from COVID-19, was in the hospital for a broken arm after a fall due to weakness caused by the virus."I looked at her and I looked at her some more after she asked me about being Wendall Huffman’s daughter... she has to be some kind of relation to me,” said Doris.Boro said she was nervous about breaking the news and for Crippen it was emotional."She said 'I am your sister, Bev.' And I literally stood up out of the chair and burst into tears. It's just a happy feeling. It's been 53 years since I've seen her when she was a baby,” said Crippen.Boro had researched her sister before, without luck, but now thanks to a global pandemic, they both feel their world is a little more complete."If it wasn't for that, I would have never found her. For months, many of us have done what we can to keep ourselves and families safe from the coronavirus.We have stayed home from events, worked from home and exercised caution when running errands, but for people who are obese, some have gravitated towards weight loss surgery as a way to protect themselves.According to medical experts, complications from COVID-19 can disproportionately affect people who are obese. In an August study, the Cleveland Clinic found patients with a body mass index of 30 or higher were found to be at a significantly higher risk for severe COVID-19, and those with a BMI of 35 and higher had a dramatically increased risk of death.“It’s been shown that people do worse with viral infections when they’re obese,” said Dr. Michael Snyder, medical director of bariatric surgery at Rose Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. “In addition, the success of a vaccine is limited in people that are obese, for any viral vaccine historically.”That August study by the Cleveland Clinic also found that when patients with obesity lose at least 5% to 10% of their weight, their risk of cardiovascular disease drops and their survival rate improves. Perhaps, that is why so many have decided to have different types of bariatric surgery to control their weight.“Obesity is really a pro-inflammatory condition and we think it really affects your T cell response; your ability to appropriately attack infection,” said Dr. Snyder.Amanda Kines-Phillips is one of those people. In February, she had wanted to get her weight more under control and decided to go through with a mini gastric bypass surgery. However, because of COVID-19 and the ban on elective surgeries, Kines-Phillips’ surgery was pushed back to July.In the four months since her mini gastric bypass, she has lost 55 pounds and feels healthier and better about health in case she contracts the virus.“I have two small daughters that I need to be there for the rest of my life and to be the best mom that I can be,” she said. “So to me [this surgery] is a life-changing tool.”Dr. Snyder says during a typical week, he performs 12 to 15 surgeries to help people control their weight. Flint schools are finally getting the help they need to provide safe water fountains for their students.Flint Community Schools thanked billionaire Elon Musk and the Musk Foundation last week for donating money to install new water fountains with filtration systems at all its schools.Lead and other toxins were found to be tainting Flint's water supply four years ago, in what's been called the Flint water crisis. Since then, the community has struggled with water contamination problems."We are deeply grateful for the generosity and the budding partnership between Flint Community Schools, the Musk Foundation and Elon Musk," said Flint Community Schools Superintendent Derrick Lopez. "The new water filtration systems will be instrumental in helping our students return to the normalcy of what should be a fundamental right: having access to safe, clean water from water fountains in their school."Flint schools will install new ultraviolet water filtration systems for all its water fountains in school buildings thanks to the 0,350 donation, according to the city of Flint.The former Tesla CEO responded to the school's announcement on Twitter. "You're most welcome. Hope to do more to help in the future," he wrote.Musk first promised to help Flint in a tweet back in July. "Please consider this a commitment that I will fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels.
