SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A baby hippo was born Saturday night at the San Diego Zoo and is now freely exploring its habitat, although always under the watchful eye of her mother. The calf, the 9th birthed by Funani since she arrived at the Zoo, is yet to be given a name."Less than ten minutes after it was born, it was already on the beach," Senior Wildlife Care Specialist Jennifer Chapman told 10News. "Out of the pool, on the beach, so right away we knew this was a strong calf."Funani can already be seen exhibiting the behaviors of hippo mothers, including licking sand off her calf, nudging her into the water, and making sure she is coming up to the surface for air. "That bond is already starting and she can start to train the calf immediately," Chapman said. "This is where you go. This is where you don't go. Listen to me. And she goes through all of that with the calf and it's really from minute one."Because Funani is very protective of the calf, the father, Otis, is being kept in a separate area from the other two. They will eventually rotate into the publicly-facing part of the habitat.The last calf born at the Zoo was a male named Tony in 2017. Because hippo mothers typically lose interest in their offspring when they begin preparing to resume mating, Tony was sent to a different zoo in 2019. 1318

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Camp Pendleton Marine was taken into custody this week after border officials say the Marine was trying to smuggle immigrants through a port of entry.The junior-enlisted Marine was taken into custody early Monday morning by U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel at the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton. The Marine was reportedly bringing undocumented immigrants into the port.The Marine is being held in civilian custody and CBP and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service were investigating. The lead authority in the case has not been determined.RELATED: Attorneys for Marines accused of human smuggling call public arrests illegalThe Marine was not part of military personnel currently serving at the border to assist CBP and Border Patrol agents, Camp Pendleton said.The Camp Pendleton Marine is the latest military member from the base to be charged in an immigration scandal. In July, 23 Marines were detained over human trafficking, drug distribution, and weapons charges, according to the base.Of those 1st Marine Division Marines, six have pleaded guilty at court martial appearances. Thirteen Marines have approved pre-trial agreements requesting separation from the Marines instead of court martials or waiving separation board processes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - The office of District Attorney Summer Stephan will soon have a new tool to better document injuries to victims of domestic violence. Her office announced on Tuesday, May 7 that 35 cameras will be purchased to aid in investigations, thanks to a ,000 grant from a California Office of Emergency Services.According to Stephan, these cameras can produce high-quality photos, which will then assist how evidence is presented in court. "These cameras can help us preserve and document evidence -- including evidence of strangulation -- which is predictive of homicide, and allows us to move forward with prosecutions and fight this persistent crime in San Diego County," said Stephan.According to a recent crime report from the San Diego Association of Governments, in 2017 there were more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents reported in San Diego County. Stephan said there has been a 20% increase in the number of domestic violence cases submitted to the District Attorney's Office over the last five years. Plus, the District Attorney's Family Protection Division has 21 pending murder cases. 11 of those cases involve the murder of an intimate partner. In addition to the new cameras, Stephan's office is currently working on nine other initiatives to bring awareness to and combat domestic violence. These initiatives include a new countywide strangulation protocol, forensic exams, and recognizing the link between homelessness and domestic violence. 1508

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy's Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies released a report today detailing recommendations for both countries to cooperate on border security and drug trafficking policy.Chief among the report's recommendations is the creation of a joint cooperating group to help both countries reconcile their differences to achieve the best policies possible. The report also suggests the creation of a joint task force to disrupt trafficking of opioids like fentanyl.Bilateral cooperation is made difficult at the moment, according to the center, due to the divergent policy views of U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, who took office last December.While Lopez Obrador declared an end to the country's war on drugs in January, Trump has sought to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border to deter drug traffickers and violent criminals in addition to immigrants entering the country illegally."Despite these challenges, we see this as an opportunity to resume a dialogue at the highest level around bilateral security,'' said Rafael Fernandez de Castro, the center's director. "Our report offers concrete and implementable policy recommendations over the next six years of Lopez Obrador's presidency, ensuring policymakers are informed and prepared to continue cooperation efforts in a difficult phase in the bilateral relationship.''In addition to the two joint groups, the center suggested that the U.S. should improve its cooperation with and support for Mexico's newly established National Guard, its criminal justice system and community policing efforts in both countries.
